FeatureThe designIndaba hasalso becomeknown forboastinguniqueinstallationsand set-ups.-nesburg. For the first time this year Durban-basedcreatives of all ages also experiencedthe Design Indaba Simulcast.”But as usual one the main attractions atthe Indaba is the expo. Here people donot have to listen to ideas or speechesor even extended conversations aboutdesign aesthetics and principles. No,they get to interact directly with theproducts that are being talked about. The ceramics were the type of thingsI would buy and put into the cabinetthat everyone sees when they entermy house, the occasional dust to keepthem shining, but never taken out tobe used. It might have appealed tothe type of people that often use thesetypes of ceramics to impress the Jones’swhen they come over for tea and biscuitsbut other than that they appearedmore decorative than anything else.Soft, warm and almost motherly formsof art also graced the floor at the Expo, small blocked pieces of hung artworkmade me wonder what types of peoplebuy these things other than grannies. My youthful point of view mightbe a bit cynical, because in actual factI did feel the urge to rub my face onsome of the delicate looking pieces. My weird tendencies aside, theywere obviously there because theyproved to be creative and worthyof being part of the Design Indaba. One thing that stood out from the expowas a wall that was dedicated to theviews of the public (and by public I meanthe people that paid to get in). The wallstood out, proud, filled with little yellowpost it’s displaying peoples answersto the big question positioned right ontop of the unit; “What does design needto solve for you?”. Besides the ridiculousanswers such as ‘I love Michael’,‘My cockroach infestation’, ‘Problems’,and my favourite one; ‘Boredom’, therewere some legitimate answers. ‘Improvingtransport’, ‘make buildings moreeco-friendly’ and ‘improving CapeTowns’ communication’ were someanswers that actually made sense. Thewall had pencils in and around it makingit easier for your average Joe andJoanne to put down their genius plans. This was a very creative research initiativeby the organisers of the 2014 DesignCapital event that will descend onthe mother city in less than two years. The artwork was rather impressivesurely raising the bar in the art industry.Apart from the hefty prices that goalong with these works of art, they wereno doubt worthy of being exhibited.‘Yes, stall owner, I’m looking at yourart. No, I will not be buying it, the loosechange I have in my back pocket is barelyenough to buy something small here.’
