BEEP referral schemeWhat is BEEP referral scheme all about?If you are currently inactive, aged 16 years or over with one or more medical conditionsthat would benefit from becoming more active, such as stress, anxiety, high bloodpressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, musculoskeletal problems, <strong>Burnley</strong> EncouragingExercise on Prescription (BEEP) may be the scheme for you.4Tell me more about BEEPOne of the main problems when thinkingabout becoming more active is where togo, how much exercise you should takeand what you should do. BEEP is a referralscheme that can be accessed through yourGP, practice nurse, physiotherapist orother health professional.You will learn more about safe physicalactivity, coping with stress and <strong>healthy</strong>eating. You will be encouraged to progresssafely at your own pace, graduallybecoming fitter to make activity part ofyour daily life.With a variety of 10-week programmeson offer, a BEEP programme will getyou started on the right track with apersonalised programme.How will I benefit from being moreactive?Taking regular exercise and keeping activecan benefit people of all ages and fitnesslevels:• Keep your heart strong and <strong>healthy</strong>,reduce risk of a heart attack or stroke• Help prevention and management ofover 20 chronic diseases• Improve mobility, balance andco-ordination• Improve strength and energy level• Help you feel and look better• Increase weight loss and weightmaintenance, increase muscle tone• Help reduce stress levels and aidrelaxation and improved sleep pattern• Help meet new peopleAll those attending a BEEP programmeare offered subsidised Swimfit passes. BEEP programmesGet up & Go/Seated EXERCISEThis is a gentle exercise programme forthose with joint or mobility problems, tohelp reduce pain and improve balance,flexibility, and co-ordination. All ourseated tutors are postural stabilityqualified.6AQUATIC BEEPAquatic BEEP offers different formsof safe and effective exercise in water,which reduces direct impact on joints.Specific goals can be achieved withinthe programme, improved range ofmovement, improved muscle strengthand improved water confidence.Coming soonSpecialist Diabetes ProgrammeIf you have type 2 diabetes, you willbe advised to look after your healthcarefully. This specialist programme willsupport you to eat a <strong>healthy</strong>,balanced diet, drink alcoholin moderation and teach youhow to exercise safely andcorrectly. All of which willmake treating your diabeteseasier and minimise yourrisk of developingcomplications.


Lite4Life Weight ManagementWhat is Lite4Life Weight Management all about?If you feel your weight is an issue and you are unsure what to do about it, the <strong>healthy</strong><strong>lifestyles</strong> team offer a Free 12-week self-referral weight management programme tosupport you in achieving your ideal weight.8Tell me more about the programmeAfter an initial health screen you willreceive personalised exercise instructionsfrom one of our experienced tutors, withyour progress monitored throughoutthe programme to keep you motivated.The programmes are delivered in groupsettings and are open to anyone 16 yearsand above who have a body mass index(BMI) over 30.Each two-hour session includes aninteractive health education topic:• Carbohydrates and calories• Portion sizes• Barriers to behaviour change• Physical activity• Alcohol - know your limits• Eating out and takeaways• Eat well plate• Fibre and salt• Goal setting• Fats and sugars• Food labellingHow will I benefit from a L4Lprogramme?• 50% less chance of developing over 20chronic conditions, including coronaryheart disease, diabetes, cancer andobesity• Increase weight loss and weightmanagement, increase muscle tone• Helps prevent one-third of cancersthat are attributed to poor diet andnutrition• Helps lower blood pressure. How overweight am I?What is my BMI?Health professionals use a measurement called body mass index (BMI) to find out whetheryou are the right weight for your height. BMI can help to identify whether you are at riskof weigh-related health conditions. A BMI of 25 and over is classed as overweight, and aBMI of 30 and over is classed as obese.Obesity is associated with increased health risks. Community classesWhat are the community classes?The <strong>healthy</strong> <strong>lifestyles</strong> team offer a wide variety of community classes throughout theborough as a continuation and progression of the BEEP or L4L programmes to help youmaintain your new found fitness levels.10Tell me more about the communityclassesWe offer daytime and evening sessions,with a choice of venues within our leisureand community facilities. There is a widerange of exercise classes to choose fromincluding Tai Chi, Pilates, seated Get Up& Go, low impact dance, swimming, easyexercise, circuit and gym-based exercise.All you need to do is choose the class foryou!For more information on each of thecommunity classes please turn to pages11-15.What do I need to do?The community classes are open to anyone16 years and over who live within theborough. There is no need to book - justcome along to a session. B’ lite ‘n’ ActiveWhat is B’lite ‘n’ Active all about?Tackling your weight will need a lifelong commitment. It can be really hard to lose weightand you have probably tried many times in the past. You were probably successful in theshort term on some attempts but you may have found that dramatic weight loss is difficultto sustain in the long term.B’lite ‘n’ Active is a safe and effective weight loss programme promoting both <strong>healthy</strong>eating and physical activity as the only way to lose weight and keep it off long term.B’lite ‘n’ Active helps you to develop lifestyle skills which will help you towards ahealthier, fitter and lighter life.Tell me more about B’lite ‘n’ ActiveUnlike other commercial slimming clubs,the main emphasis of B’lite ‘n’ Active is theimportance of physical activity in weightloss and weight management. B’lite ‘n’Active offers you the opportunity to havea weekly weigh-in and to access two freeactivity sessions at leisure centres andcommunity centres to help you towardsyour weekly physical activity target. It can help tolower blood pressure and stress levels,incorporates Qi Gong – a breathingtechnique for relaxation. Cecilia, ourTai Chi instructor, originates from HongKong and has been practicing Tai Chi allher life. She has a wealth of experiencedealing with joint and mobility problemsand is qualified in Tai Chi for arthritis.AQUACISEWhether you are looking to improveyour cardiovascular fitness orrehabilitate a chronic source of pain,Aquacise can help. Aquacise can beundertaken by anyone, regardless ofheight, weight and build and is ideal forthose who have completed the AquaticBEEP programme. Exercise in the waterputs much less stress on your musclesand joints.AQUAnatalAquanatal is a wonderful form of safe exercise during and after pregnancy. Aquanatalcan help you to have a shorter labour and help to alleviate antenatal and postnataldepression. It’s fun and will give you an opportunity to meet new friends, whilstfreeing you from the weight of your pregnancy for an hour. Cardiovascular Health programmeCardiovascular Rehabilitation and Exercise after StrokeIf you have or have had any of the following then you could be eligible for ourspecialist programme:16• Heart attack• Heart surgery – bypass, stents, valves• Angina• Heart failure• Irregular heart beat• Stroke• TIA – mini stroke• Peripheral vascular diseaseThe <strong>healthy</strong> <strong>lifestyles</strong> cardiovascularhealth team is led by Beth who hasa Masters degree in cardiovascularrehabilitation and also holds twospecialist qualifications in cardiacrehabilitation and exercise after stroke.Beth has more than 13 years experiencein rehabilitation and, with her team, isable to tailor a programme to suit youand your goals.You will have an individual assessmentprior to starting on a programme andon-going monitoring throughout the10-week programme. You will also besupported in making long term lifestylechanges to help reduce the risk of anyfurther events. Sessions include ladiesand men only, low level circuits, gymbased exercise, seated exercise and TaiChi in various venues.New for 2013Exercise after Stroke classes – specific evidence-based exercise class tohelp you return to everyday activities.
