Smith distinguished professorAU College of EducationAuburn, Ala.Dear Friends of the College of Education,As chair of the college’s Campaign Committee,it has been rewarding to see how our alumni andfriends are helping to ensure a better future for allin our college through the university’s “It Begins atAuburn” campaign. In terms of the fundraising support theCollege of Education has received, the generosity of thefaculty, staff, alumni and friends has been overwhelming.In 2006, several campaign milestones bolstered our campaignefforts, including our largest-ever outright cash donationof $1 million, a newly endowed $1.8 million in futuremath scholarships, a $3 million planned gift fund for excellence,and 20 new scholarships that doubled the amount ofsupport we offered students during this academic year.Support of our campaign and overall efforts did notcome just from our alumni and friends. Participation by Education faculty and staffin the first internal campaign of its kind in recent years elevated the college to thirdamong AU’s 14 colleges and schools in terms of overall participation. Campus-wide,the 2006 Faculty Staff Campaign generated more than $500,000 in available funds.Giving among Education faculty and staff rose to 61.5 percent, thereby exceeding thenew record of 43 percent campus-wide giving by all university faculty and staff—upfrom the previous 9 percent. This level of philanthropy demonstrates an even deeperloyalty and commitment these employees have for Auburn beyond their daily contributionsof time, talents and resources. Their leadership continues to set a greatexample for not only their peers, but for those of us who benefit everyday through theacademic foundation we received as students in the college.Owing much to the past, Auburn’s greater debt is ever to the future. For this reason,I urge you to show your support of the college by participating in the “It Beginsat Auburn” campaign. I challenge each of you to make a contribution. Giving is avery personal decision. A gift to Auburn—no matter the size of the contribution— isan investment that directly benefits all of us by positively changing the place where itbegan for you and for me.
