Kris Krouse ’02 receives outstanding public service award from the Indiana
Conference of Higher Education. Krouse is currently the Executive Director for Shirley Heinze
Land Trust in Michigan City, IN, managing a not-for-profit in which he dedicated the largest
property as a state nature preserve and increased its size by 75%. He is an environmental
scientist by training. Among the many positions he holds on professional advisory boards,
councils, committees, and programs concerning land conservation and protection, quality
of life, and environmental management, he was appointed by Gov. Daniels to be a member
of the Invasive Species Council of Indiana last year. Krouse received the Indiana Governor’s
Award for Tomorrow’s Leaders in 2007; was profiled in Chicago Wilderness and Saving Land
magazines in 2009 and 2008, respectively; and became a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow in 2009.
Krouse (pictured left) still finds time to work with Michigan City High School students as
a STRIVE high school mentor and Junior Achievement teacher. Krouse says “SJC definitely
helped me understand service and it continues to be a part of my daily life.”
Students from all of the dorms are
involved in the Gallagher Charitable
Society. The name now honors both the
founding dorm and Bishop Gallagher,
former Bishop of our diocese.
Attendance at the Christmas event
has grown—with greater participation
from the College community. The SJC
baseball team plays a leadership role
in the event. The team is building a
tradition of service as the eight famous
reindeer and Rudolph. Students, players,
and coaches work as Santa’s elves with
assistance from the Education Club.
