TIME, TALENT, OR TREASURE
by Ray Hall ’71
One of the personal
legacies passed down from
Saint Joseph’s College to its
alumni is that alumni are part
of the SJC community for life.
Unfortunately, many alumni
disassociate themselves from
their alma mater due to their
belief that they do not have
the means of supporting
their College in a manner
commensurate with what the
College has provided them.
Truly believing that alumni
are family members for life,
SJC affords those of us who
do not have the monetary
means to support the College
(but do have the time) to
support the College in a variety of different ways. Several
ways of providing support would be by volunteering to be
a “Puma Mover” in August. These “movers” are always
needed, and being a Puma parent, we found it extremely
helpful in making the transitional move. It’s rewarding and
allows for the casual interaction between yourself and
incoming freshmen. You can also support Saint
Joseph’s College by simply making purchases
at the College Store.
Another approach to support the College
is through regional receptions. Regional
receptions are the lifeline for sustaining the
viability of any college. These receptions are
particularly important for small colleges that
do not always have the advantage of built-in
marketing on a large scale. These gatherings
help link the past to the present. This linkage
is important in allowing alumni, parents, and
friends to discuss and evaluate the anecdotal
success of the College with regards to
establishing baselines to see how the College
has improved over time and to discuss the
direction that the College may be taking.
SJC Freshman Legacies
With input from alumni,
representing various years
at the College, a great deal
of information is available.
These receptions can be
used to develop business
networks that can in turn be
used to identify job leads and
potential positions for Saint
Joseph’s College students
preparing to enter into the job
market.
Armed with information
regarding the College, you are
now prepared to approach
high school students with
the intent of recruiting them
to attend SJC. Recruiting
materials are readily available
through the College’s Admissions Office. You will find that
high school guidance counselors are more than willing
to work with you in meeting with students from their
respective schools. If you are tentative in meeting with
students in that particular venue, you may find it easier to
approach high school students in CCD programs at your
