Joint Symposium to be held at<br />

Siem Riep, Cambodia, January 2-4,<br />

KAREN VENDITTI, Ph.D., Assistant<br />

Professor of Education, is currently<br />

working on a project through<br />

the Early Childhood Leadership<br />

Institute of the University of the<br />

District of Columbia. Between<br />

June 19 and June 30, Venditti,<br />

along with two public school<br />

colleagues, offered workshops<br />

in an Early Childhood Reading<br />

Academy, which was conducted<br />

in Washington, DC. Venditti<br />

and colleagues presented to<br />

approximately 100 preschool<br />

educators and administrators on<br />

the use of research-based reading<br />

instruction to maximize student<br />

achievement. They have been<br />

requested to follow up with select teachers through on-site<br />

observations to provide feedback on the implementation<br />

of these methods in order to develop exemplars for use<br />

in future training sessions. Also, Venditti presented three<br />

workshops to teachers and administrators of Geminus/<br />

Headstart of Lake County in May and August. These<br />

workshops were titled: “Scaffolding Early Readers for<br />

Optimal Comprehension”; “Vocabulary Extension in the<br />

Early Childhood Setting: You Get What You Give”; and<br />

“Response to Instruction—The Impact on Early Childhood<br />

Educators.” She presented “What’s New in Children’s<br />

Literature” to the Kankakee Valley Reading Council on<br />

Vendetti receiving the Curtis Osburn Distinguished Service<br />

Award from ATE-I President-Elect Jane Riehl.<br />

September 27. Venditti also won two awards from the<br />

Association of Teacher Educators - Indiana (ATE-I): the<br />

Duaine Lang Research Award, which is a $500 mini-grant<br />

for proposed research that Dr. Jennifer Barce and Venditti<br />

are developing; and the Curtis Osburn Distinguished<br />

Service Award, given to one member annually who has<br />

contributed a great deal to ATE-I.<br />

DANA ZIER, Instructor, is one of<br />

four resident artists chosen to<br />

represent historic Prophetstown<br />

Dana Zier<br />

near Battleground, Ind., for the year<br />

<strong>2011</strong>–12. She was chosen as one of<br />

10 Indiana Artists in <strong>2011</strong> to represent,<br />

paint, and benefit the “Naturally<br />

Inspired” event for the Indianapolis<br />

Zoo. Zier’s oil paintings and Rena<br />

Brouwer’s renowned watercolors of Carroll County Indiana<br />

were in a show October 1–30 at the Opera House Gallery<br />

of Contemporary Art in Delphi, Ind. Opening reception was<br />

October 7.<br />

BONNIE ZIMMER, Associate Professor of<br />

Art and Assistant Professor of Education,<br />

showed her artwork at an exhibition<br />

entitled “In Harmony with Nature”<br />

on September 16. The exhibition was<br />

presented by the Prairie Arts Council in
