MUSICSarah’s MuseUp in the head and heart of Sarah JaroszBY MARGARET MOSERIn June 2009, one month after SarahJarosz turned 18 and graduated with honorsfrom Wimberley High School, her first albumwas released. Song Up in Her Head on NorthCarolina roots beacon Sugar Hill Recordstook off, not only in the sales market, whereit did respectably, but in critical circles.Rolling Stone praised it, NPR interviewedher, and she appeared on A Prairie HomeCompanion, as well as on stages in the bluegrassand folk festivals she’d grown up with.On New Year’s Day 2010, while the worldslept, she recorded with the Decemberistsspin-off Black Prairie.Jarosz stands apart from her peers. She’snot Miley Cyrus Twittering her life away. She’s not Taylor Swift, around whom shecan sing circles. She’s not Jewel or HilaryDuff or Shannon Curfman, all of whom precededher down the teen path. She’s not the14-year-old who giggled to the Chronicle in2005 that things were “a blast.” She doesn’tuse Auto-Tune.She’s the product of Central Texas’ richmusical heritage and her own inborn talent. She is also the face of young musicianseverywhere. Her triple threat is a marvelouslymature alto, a prodigious mastery of clawhammerbanjo and mandolin, and songwriting awoman of any age would be proud to claim.Later this month, she’ll attend the GrammyAwards thanks to her nomination for BestCountry Instrumental Performance on SongUp in Her Head.‘Song Up in Her Head’Teenage girls are the romance paperbacks ofmusic. They’re a never-ending, nonstop audienceof hormonal angst and bright-pink heartache,an audience that starts when 12 tradesup for 13, a merciless time for the heart. To be14 and female is to experience usually unrequitedlove with exquisite pain. Never againwill you be so unprepared for the soul-crush oflove lost than at 15. Even love fulfilled makes16 pure agony, and 17’s got nothing on 18when it comes to the hazards of love. Nineteenmakes no promises when el corazón goes loco.Teenage girls make up a ridiculously largeand profitable segment of the record-buyingpublic, but they – like the romance authorswhose sales keep the paperback publishingindustry afloat – get no respect. Not only isthe absence of respect outrageous consideringthe revenue that demographic generates, teenage girls are traditionally jeered at andridiculed for their intense devotion and fanworship, a quality usually desired in mostother musical circles.Teenage girls hold their own as performers inrock, pop, country, and folk music, commandingidol status commensurate to the tides ofpopular taste. Charts are packed with one-hitwonders as well as enduring talents who wereteenage performers; country and pop music areespecially fond of young girl singers. The voiceof the teenage girl is so pure, so real, it transcendsartifice and strikes the deepest chordsof the heart throughout decades. Jarosz bearscareer similarities to 1980s pop queen DebbieGibson, the youngest teen girl to write, produce, and sing a No. 1 song. She’s also connected byhome state to LeAnn Rimes and Tanya Tucker,Texas teens whose talents took them to the top– on compositional skills giving an edge to theirestimable careers. What do they all sing about? The one topic common to all young women.New love, old love, faded love, unrequitedlove, sweet love, deniedlove, misguided love, tender love, lost love, unattainable love, hotlove, desperate, wild, bittersweet love. Allof it guaranteed at thatage to be fleeting, acute, and lethal. Where all islove, the world is periphery in soft focus, anImpressionist painting with growing pains. Theglorious cycle of song, the medley extemporaneous, begets dances at dawn, waltzes under themoon, springtime, flowers, rainbows, and ohyes, sometimes sobering cultural commentary.Jarosz tackles the topic of love in her songswith guileless grace. This flame burns brighter with every poem readThis bird flies higher with a song up in her headSarah, have you been in love?“Yes.”JOHN ANDERSONSincerely, SarahAbout eight years ago, Jarosz’s career tookshape, though she’d been singing since age 2.Conventional wisdom decrees that an artistmust toil in clubs, climbing the long way to thetop from opening act to headliner, developingan audience along the way by wowing ’em withthat elusive combination of charisma and talent. But the folk and bluegrass festival circuitoffers an alternative for young musicians todevelop that trickles down into the community. That familial closeness brought Jarosz, winnerof the 2006-2007 Best Kid Band award at theAustin Music Awards, onstage during the 2005CMA Music Festival to salute Earl Scruggsand during New Year’s Eve 2008 at RymanAuditorium with Del McCoury. At home for Christmas break before returningto the East Coast, she’s the picture of collegiateconfidence, recounting her acceleratingcareer while sitting inside Nutty Brown Cafenear Dripping Springs and north of her nativeWimberley. Clad in jeans and high-heeledboots, a black scarf wrapped around her neckwith Boston flair over a cream-colored blousethat flatters her fair skin and ripe lips, Jaroszreflects the late December sky outside in herlarge blue-gray eyes. Whatever adolescentawkwardness she experienced, growing upagrees with her.“I really started at the weekly bluegrassjams in Wimberley on Fridays,” she explains.“Mike Bond was the ringleader, and to haveone of my first experiences playing likethat be so welcoming meant a lot to me.And going to festivals around the country.[Colorado’s] RockyGrass is a great example. It’s put on by Planet Bluegrass, who doesTelluride. Being a young musician and ayoung girl, it was extremely important tobe around people who encouraged me. I’vebeen going there for nine years of my life, and it’s like a family reunion.“I was 11 or 12when I got my first‘tweener’ [minisetsbetween major acts]at RockyGrass. I amso lucky that peoplelike Craig Ferguson, who runs Tellurideand RockyGrass, andStephen Ruffo, whodoes Wintergrass, werewilling to let me play.Old Settler’s [Music Festival] too was a hugepart of my growth as a musician. It openeda lot of doors that opened more doors. Littlethings like that built up.”Built up meant beginning a tightrope actof school, lessons, practices, performances, and, somewhere wedged between, a younggirl’s life. For that, Jarosz credits her parents,Gary and Mary Jarosz, who intellectuallystimulated and musically cultivated hernascent career.“They are not stage parents. They’ve beenamazing, so encouraging, and really made itThe voice of the teenagegirl is so pure, so real,it transcends artificeand strikes the deepestchords of the heartthroughout decades.CONTINUED ON P.4644 T H E A U S T I N C H R O N I C L E JANUARY 15, 2010 a u s t i n c h r o n i c l e . c o m
