Eucalyptus Vigorous quick growing evergreen trees originating from
Australia. They mostly have attractive peeling white bark. Some
forms produce very different juvenile foliage which can be
maintained by annual pruning. They grow in a wide variety of
soils but not shallow chalk. They succeed on heavy wet acid clay
around the Nursery site. They grow so quickly when first planted
that they sometimes blow over. This can be remedied by cutting
back to 1ft in spring and selecting a strong shoot to grow upward.
This is the Mandrake of folk tales and superstition. Coarse hairy
leaves and stalk-less green-and-purple flowers are followed by
yellow tomato-like fruits. In time gone by the thick, fleshy root
was dressed up as a person and kept in the home, where it was
said to bring good luck, if treated with due reverence. If tried
today, it should be borne in mind that the root is said to emit a
shriek when pulled out of the ground. Anyone who hears this
noise, will die. The recommended method is to sacrifice a small
dog by tying it to the plant, tempting it to run forward with a
piece of meat, and stand out of earshot.
