Approximatetemperatures obtained dUrin~the drilling of a hole in a trough to adepth of 35 feet were about 7 C higher than those obtained in anadjacent ridge. This may be due to the freezing of the lake water inthe troughs.The discovery on the ice shelf of debris from a camp madeby members of Peary's 1906 or 1909 expeditions indicates that therehas been no net accumulation of ice in the past 45 years. Thepresence of driftwood on the shore inside the ice shelf suggests thatthere was an open polar sea in relatively recent times.The historical finds made in 1954 include a note and mapleft at Cape Fanshawe Martin in 1876 by Lt. Pelham Aldrich, a noteleft by Dr. H.K.E. Kr~gerin 1930 in a cairn built by Peary northof Lands Lokk, and a cache and note left in 1909 by D.B. MacMillanon Ward Hunt Island. A komatik from the MacMillan cache wasrelashed and served admirably during the last months of the fieldseason for dog team trips along the coast.Atrip to King William Island in 1954. By Paul F. Cooper.In August 1954 the writer, accompanied by his wife andson, Paul F. Cooper, Jr .• and Mr. John Richards. flew to KingWilliam Island with Charlie Weber of Arctic Wings for an eight-daytrip. During this time we visited many of the points of historicinterest on the island, and in particular the site where Crozier andhis men camped after coming ashore from the Erebus and Terrorin April 1848.We left Churchill On August 5 and flew directly to GjoaHaven. On the 6th we flew over O'Reilly Island. hoping to see somesign of the Franklin expedition ship reported to have sunk there. butsaw nothing. We then stopped at Terror Bay and afterwards at CapeHerschel, where the ruins of Simpson's cairn, built in 1839. are stilleasily found. That night we spent at Spence Bay, and late on theevening of the 7th we flew to the northwest coast of King WilliamIsland, taking :with us Father Henry. whom we later left at hismission in Gjoa Haven. We landed north of Cape Jane Franklin on agood-sized lake where Burwash and Finnie had camped in September1930.
