ThiB waB a.ClOBe.up of the bird, and the drawingB were prepared by the well-knownCanadian artiBt, Emanuel Hahn of Toronto.In 1953 the POBt Office Depart ment began to iBBueeommemorative BerieB of wildlife BtampB. <strong>The</strong> purpoBe of thewildlife BerieB iB, in the wordB of the late Han. Alcide Cote,then POBtmaBter General, "to increaBe the intereBt of the Canadianpublic, and otherB intereBted in Canada, in the importance of ourwildlife reBourceB. It iB the Department'B hope that the wildlifeBerieB of pOBtage Btamp iBBueB will emphaBize to all CanadianB theimportance of Becuring and reBtoring the wildlife reBourceB ofCanada, not only for their conBiderable economic value but alBObecauBe they are a conBtant Bource of pleaBure to thouBandB inevery walk of life." <strong>The</strong>Be BtampB have been very popular andthe demand for them haB far exceeded that for a Becond group ofeommemorative BtampB which waB iBBued during roughly theBame period of time.Three wildlife BtampB were iBBued on 1 April 1953.<strong>The</strong> Z cent blue Btamp (No.3) Bhowing a polar bear waB deBignedby John CraBby, an artiBt of the National MUBeum of Canada.<strong>The</strong> other two BtampB (NoB. 4, 5), depicting a mOOBe and abighorn Bheep, were deBigned by Emanuel Hahn. <strong>The</strong> mOOBe waBilluBtrated on the 3 cent brown and the bighorn Bheep on the 4 centblack.In 1954 an addition waB made to the northern aBpectof the wildlife BerieB when the 4 cent grey pOBtage Btamp of thewalruB waB iBBued (No.6). ThiB Btamp waB alBa deBigned byEmanuel Hahn and an intereBting feature iB the incorporationof "BundogB" into the background.-<strong>The</strong> following year two additional poBtage BtampBwere iBBued in Bupport of Canada'B National Wildlife week. <strong>The</strong>4 cent Btamp waB purple in colour and illuBtrated the head of aImUBkox (No.8). It waB deBigned by Emanuel Hahn and, it maybe recalled, waB the Bubject of much comment. <strong>The</strong> 5 centiBBue waB blue in colour and Bhowed two Whooping CraneB inflight (No.7). This Btamp waB deBigned by William Rowan,a zoologist of Edmonton, Alberta.
