Manning:The following letter has been reproduced as it containsinteresting references to the wildlife in Banks Island.Dear Torn:Sachs Harbour.March 23, 1955.I was very glad to hear from you also glad you liked theskulls I sent you. Too bad I couldn't fill out what you want but Idid my best. Too bad I didn't get your letter soon enough. I justgot it on the 20th of March but I'll do my best to try and get someskulls. Only ones hard to get are bearded seals - always the headsare smashed up. I came across here to Banks Island by Fred alone.I left my family in Tuk and I sent Ernest to school last fall. Hesure didn1t like going to school but when I told him he had to go hesaid okay. I sure missed him on the trail. He trapped with me lastwinter and he got 40 foxes. I think if I had him this winter he wouldhave got more. There were lots of foxes this winter but we lost lotsby wolves and the foxes were eating each other up so that made itworse. We got several crazy foxes this winter so it's a bad sign fornext year. It's been pretty good all along the mainland coast fromwhat we have been hearing for foxes.Pat Kivik would like to find out just where the cac:he is inDe Salis Bay. He wants you to draw a map of the bay and where youmade the cache. Fred says he often thinks of you. He did good thisyear with his family in trapping. They got over 1,200 foxes up tillnow. They all still have one more trip to make. The ca,ribou aredying off again this winter - mostly cows and fawns and there havebeen a lot of wolves in Nov. and Dec. Soon as the sun carne backthey seemed to go some place - maybe further north going withthe caribou. The D. F. W. building up here in Sachs next summersomewhere on top of the hill by the ice pond. That'll be all for now.I ~m sincerely yours.(Sgi.) Bertram Pokiak
