By DIArcy Charles.In 1954 the Canadian Hydrographic Service sent twochartered ships and four other survey parties to the north tocontinue the charting of arctic and subarctic waters. <strong>The</strong>separties were in the north from June to mid-October.As in previous years a hydrographic survey partyaccompanied the Department of Transport's ship C. D. Howe onher Eastern <strong>Arctic</strong> Patrol voyage of some 12,000 miles. Thisparty, under the direction of R. B. Campbell, obtained thousandsof miles of "track" soundings in previously unsounded waters.L. p. Quick headed a similar party aboard the Department ofTransport's icebreaker d'Iberville and D.O. LeLievre carriedout similar duties aboard the new Naval icebreaker H.M.C.S.Labrador. H. R. Blandford was aboard the U.S. Navy icebreakerBurton Island in the Western <strong>Arctic</strong><strong>The</strong> chartered sealers, the <strong>The</strong>ron and the Algerine,were fitted out at Pictou, Nova Scotia, whence they sailed inmid-June for subarctic waters. <strong>The</strong> <strong>The</strong>ron, for the thirdconsecutive year on hydrographic operations under the commandof J.E. V. Goodwill, continued the survey of the harbour andapproaches at Hopedale, Labrador. In JUly she proceeded toRankin Inlet, on the west coast of Hudson Bay, where thediscovery of nickel and other minerals has created the needfor an ore-loading port. More than 3,000 linear miles of• sounding were made from the <strong>The</strong>ron's three launches inshoal waters, and 200 square miles of the large-scale chartingnecessary to allow passage of deep-draft ore ships wasIcompleted.
