CHEMICAL RELEASE / SHELTER-IN-PLACE!chemical release/shelter-in-placeIn case <strong>of</strong> a hazardous chemical release in yourcommunity, you may be instructed to “shelterin-place.”Take immediate shelter where youare – at home, work or school, usually just fora few hours.Act quickly when told to “shelter-in-place.”Follow the instructions <strong>of</strong> local authorities.Go inside.Close all windows and doors.Turn <strong>of</strong>f furnace and exhaust fans.Listen to the local radio or TV for furtherinstructions. Keep phone lines free.If odour is strong, seal an inside room with wettowels at the base <strong>of</strong> the door. Breathe througha damp towel to filter air.


SUMMER STORMS! summer stormsSummer storms can bring heavy rain, highwinds, hail, intense lightning and eventornadoes, all <strong>of</strong> which can damage propertyand threaten lives.Listen to the local radio or TV station.Remain indoors.During a tornado, go to the basement orunder a heavy table or desk. Stay away fromwindows, outside walls and doors.During a tornado, if you are outside, findshelter or crouch in a ditch, culvert or ravinewith your feet together and your head down.During a lightning storm keep away fromtrees, power and telephone lines. You maystay in your car.


WINTER STORMS! winter stormsWinter storms bring the dangers <strong>of</strong> high winds,extremely low temperatures and heavy snowfallor freezing rain. If caught in a blizzard, seekshelter and wait out the storm.Dress for the weather.Cover mouth and nose in extreme cold.Use public transportation if possible.Ensure you have at least half a tank <strong>of</strong> gas andyour travel kit in your vehicle.

Staytuned to your local radio station for more information.Tips for an extended power outage• Turn <strong>of</strong>f all electrical appliances and equipment.• Keep fridge and freezer closed as much as possible.• Stay warm. Gather family members in the warmestroom in the house. Dress in layers, draw drapes orcover windows to prevent heat loss.• Do not use camp stoves, kerosene heaters orbarbecues indoors as they emit Carbon Monoxide.Gas stoves used as a heat source for long periodswithout ventilation will do the same.• Ensure you have access to a phone that doesn’tneed power to operate, or a cellphone.
