Reductions
The Foundation for Young Swiss Abroad is committed to ensuring that no
young Swiss Abroad misses out on the opportunity to visit a camp in
Switzerland due to lack of funds. In justifiable cases we therefore offer to
reduce the camp fees or – exceptionally for children from particularly far-off
countries and only once – even contribute to the cost of travel. Please indicate
on the registration form whether you wish an application form for a reduction.
Staff
The winter camps are run by experienced teams of camp leaders who are
trained for winter sports. They can speak several languages and are at least 18
years old. The children are taken care of from the moment they get up in the
morning until they go to bed at night. All the camp leaders are volunteers who
run the camp during their own vacation at minimal cost.
Application
If you feel your child would like to join one of our winter camps, please
note the following: Discuss these holiday plans thoroughly with your
child. Try to find out whether he or she would really like to spend a
holiday this way. In spite of the marvellous opportunities and experiences,
a Swiss holiday has sides to it which ought to be thought about seriously.
The journey to Switzerland is long, children will meet only children they
do not know (although this will change very quickly!), the people they
love will be far away. All these matters should be thoroughly thought
through and discussed with your child before applying. We are convinced
that most of our participants will have a wonderful time in Switzerland.
But we are also aware that a holiday of this kind could be difficult for your
child if it is arranged against his or her will!
We are asked sometimes if a child could come to our camp together with a
friend, so that he or she already knows at least another person. This will be
possible only if the other child is Swiss Abroad, as well. Almost all children
coming to our camps are in the same situation. On arrival, they don’t know
anybody. Normally it doesn’t take long until everybody has begun new
friendship with the others.
In principle, applications are processed in order of receipt. The application for a
winter amp should be sent before October 30, 2011. After reception of your
application form we will send you a confirmation so that you can immediately
organise the trip to Switzerland. All additional information will be sent to you
two months before the camp starts.
Accommodations
Arolla (VS): The Chalet de la Jeunesse is only a few minutes' walk from the ski
lifts and the wide variety of ski slopes. The rustic, free-standing holiday home is
situated in a quiet location and is well equipped with all practical amenities.
www.colonies-arolla.com
Sedrun (GR): The Romansh-speaking mountain village of Sedrun is situated in
Surselva, amidst the spectacular alpine scenery of the Grisons Oberland, at an
altitude of 1,450 meters above sea level. The two-storey Aurora holiday chalet
(www.aurora.ch) is in a central but quiet location in Sedrun.
Children will be accommodated in rooms with four to eight beds.
Camp language
Participants come from all over the world and speak a wide range of languages
(e.g. G, F, E, S, I). The team of leaders carry out the programmes in German,
French and English. So the camp language does not depend on the language
spoken in the camp location.
Program
The main activities during the winter camp will be all sorts of winter sports. The
most important sports will be skiing and snowboarding but we will also offer a
varied recreational program as sledding or ice skating. The program is suited for
beginners as well as for expert skiers and snowboarders.
On a day of bad weather or as alternative to the winter sports we might plan
excursions in the region, visit an indoor swimming pool, do contests or some
workshops. In addition, children will also be left enough time to pursue their
own leisure activities and make friends from all over the world.
Camp locations
Arolla (VS): Situated amidst the tranquil surroundings of pine forests at the
foot of majestic, soaring peaks, Arolla is a picturesque little village that is an
ideal point of departure for unforgettable outdoor experiences. The chalet is
right next to the ski lifts with direct access to spectacular ski slopes featuring
downhill runs at altitudes of between 1,980 and 3,000 meters.
www.evolene-region.ch
Sedrun (GR): Sedrun is regarded as one of Switzerland's most attractive ski
regions as well as one of the areas with the most reliable snowfalls. Located in
the Gotthard Oberalp arena, and with a wide range of ski runs (50 km) at
altitudes between 1,450 – 2,350 meters, it offers all something for every skier
and snowboarder, no matter what their skill level. The ski region also boasts
brand-new six-sweater chairlifts. www.disentis-sedrun.ch
