INTRODUCTIONThis is a Distance Education course designed specifically for those students whose learningstyles are best served by providing instructional opportunities beyond the traditional classroomsetting.This course is designed to help the students adjust to an online learning environment and learnhow to achieve student success.B. COURSE OBJECTIVESUpon the successful completion of this course:1. The student will be familiar with his/her academic needs and strengths.2. The student will demonstrate using the microcomputer as a learning tool.3. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the college policies, and procedures.4. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the library and its research tools.5. The student will demonstrate knowledge of effective study skills.6. D. GRADING/EVALUATION1. The final grade for the course will be determined as follows:Distance Education and Technologies Module 20 pointsNRCC Virtual Tour Module10 pointsStudy <strong>Skills</strong> Module49 pointsLibrary Research <strong>Skills</strong> Module22 pointsCounseling Module21 pointsTotal122 points2. Grading Scale:A 90% and upB 80% - 89%C 70% - 79%D 60% - 69%F Below 59%The above grading scale may change if special projects or papers are assigned. The instructorwill notify you of such grade change(s).E. WITHDRAWAL POLICYStudent Initiated Withdrawal PolicyA student may drop or withdraw from a class without academic penalty during the first sixtypercent (60%) of a session. For purposes of enrollment reporting, the following proceduresapply:a. If a student withdraws from a class prior to the termination of the add/drop period for thesession, the student will be removed from the class roll and no grade will be awarded.b. After the add/drop period, but prior to completion of sixty percent (60%) of a session, astudent who withdraws or is withdrawn from a course will be assigned a grade of "W." Agrade of “W” implies that the student was making satisfactory progress in the class at thetime of withdrawal, that the withdrawal was officially made before the deadline published inthe college calendar, or that the student was administratively transferred to a differentprogram.c. After that time, if a student withdraws from a class, a grade of "F" will be assigned.Exceptions to this policy may be made under documented mitigating circumstances if thestudent was passing the course at the last date of attendance.3


A retroactive grade of “W” may be awarded only if the student would have been eligible underthe previously stated policy to receive a “W” on the last date of class attendance. The last dateof attendance for a distance education course will be the last date that work was submitted.Late withdrawal appeals will be reviewed and a decision made by the Coordinator of StudentServices.Instructor Initiated WithdrawalStudents who have not attended class or picked up/accessed distance learning materials bythe last day to drop the class and receive a refund must be withdrawn by the instructor duringthe following week. No refund will be applicable. Students who fail to submit work by thedeadlines will be withdrawn after they have missed two assignment deadlines. Students whoare withdrawn in this manner after the withdrawal date set each semester receive a grade of“F” in the course.The Distance Education and Technologies Module must be successfully completed prior to theLast Day to Drop and Receive a Refund or the student will be administratively withdrawn.F. CHEATING/PLAGIARISM POLICYA grade of zero will be awarded to any writing assignments or tests that show cheating orplagiarism. To plagiarize is “To use and pass off as one’s own the ideas or writings of another.”(Definition adapted from the American Heritage Dictionary.) Remember that plagiarismincludes lifting words or ideas from Internet sites, as well as copying from print sources.G.
