Application guideThe explosion hazard: The barrier valve can be used to provide protection against the propagation of ST 1 & ST 2 dust explosions(K max ≤ 299 bar∙m/s) and hybrid mixtures characterised by a maximum vapour or gas concentration of 50% of the lower explosionlimit (LEL). The valves withstand an explosion overpressure P EX of 10 bar (5 bar for the DN 700 size valve). In combination with venting: If the vessel to which the pipe is connected is protected by explosion venting, the static activationpressure P stat of the explosion vent should be ≥ 0.2 bar to guarantee reliable performance of the valve. In combination with suppression: If the vessel to which the pipe is connected is protected by explosion suppression, the staticactivation pressure P a of the suppression system should be ≥ 0.2 bar to guarantee reliable performance of the valve.Minimum and maximum installation distances from the vessel being protected are: minimum 5 m and maximum 12.5 m. Thetype ESI-R explosion isolation check valve has a reduced minimum installation distance of 1.5 m for K St values below 500 bar.m/s.These distances are for reference only and should be carefully engineered depending on the explosion hazard, the explosionoverpressure (P max or P red ) in the connected vessel and the valve size.Installation: The Ventex valves are designed to be installed horizontally, however as an option they can be factory set for verticalinstallation.Dust load: The valve has been designed for use in clean air process pipes. If intended for use in dust-laden pipes, the applicationshould be reviewed carefully and may require process modifications and short service intervals.Examples of applicationHot air inletA Ventex valve installed in the air intake pipe will prevent explosion pressure damage to the heat exchanger in the event ofan explosion originating from the drying chamber of a spray / flash dryer system or atomiser. In the example below represents the slurry feed pipe.Fig 5 Photo 1

Pneumatic conveyingA Ventex valve installed in the clean air outlet pipe of the dustfilter will prevent explosion damage to the fan if an explosionoccurs in the cyclone or filter . The Ventex valve installed in the clean air intake of the pneumatic conveying pipe thattransports the product from cyclone to other process areas, will prevent explosion propagation into the manned process area . Inthis application an explosion isolation of the valve prevent explosion propagation from the product outlet of the cyclone. Theexplosion isolation of the dust-laden product inlet is achieved by Fike chemical or mechanical active explosion barrier system .Further informationThe above applications identify the use of passive explosion isolation valves on the clean air inlets and outlets.Fike’s “Total Concept Explosion Protection” provides solutions for other explosion protection requirements.Explosion Venting Bulletin N° 8.0300.00FlamQuench Bulletin N° 8.4000.00Explosion Isolation Valve Bulletin N° 8.5500.00Isolation Container SRD Bulletin N° 8.5501.00Suppression Container HRD Bulletin N° 8.6501.00Fig 6 Photo 2All above data are subject to change without notice.
