All for a fishy taleMeera S. Sa s h i ta l, De o n a r, Mu m b a iAfter a lapse of many years, I visited Kolkata onthe insistence of my cousin Ratna (Reethu) Sarawgi. She was organizing a school play which she hadproduced and was keen that I see it.I was eager to see it too as I was aware thatshe had produced several much-acclaimed, megaevents and annual school functions during hertenure as Head of Department for the Nursery atLa Martiniere, Kolkata, the school from which shehad taken premature retirement after 22 years ofa highly successful career. One of these, “JungleStory”, which had marked the school’s goldenjubilee, was based on the famous Rudyard Kiplingstories and had a cast of as many as 1300 childrenand was spread over five stages. On D-day - November 29, 2OO9 - all roadsseemed to lead to the Science City Main Auditoriumwhere the play was being staged. The huge crowd ofparents and children made it difficult to approachthe Auditorium. The play, titled “Under the Sea - A FishyTale”, organized by the teachers and students ofModern High School, was veritably, a visual feast.Conceptualized, scripted and directed by Reethu, this play had almost 8OO students from ClassesIV to VIII participating in it, while children fromClasses IX to XII lent their voices to the various‘fishy’ characters. The dances and co-ordination were breathtaking- each separate group of fish appearing on thestage with its individual dance sequence coveringKathakali, Bhangra, Salsa and so on. Every bit waswonderfully choreographed and executed. While themusic and dance were undoubtedly delightful, thebeauty lay in the costumes that had been designedfor each species of fish. Most of all, the sequencewith girl students on roller skates depicting blackand white costumed zebra fish, stole the show.Reethu’s story was original and simple - a littlefish called Jet Li, who lived in an Aquarium, accidentally gets flushed out and finds himselfin a beautiful coral reef in the ocean. There hemeets Fishy 13O3, a kind and friendly fish, whointroduces him to the beauties of the reef which isinhabited by innumerable fish and other underwatercreatures, and also safeguards him from the evilshark, Sharkozy, and the baby whale, Booma. Thestory ends with the downfall of Sharkozy throughthe wiles of Fishy who is then elevated to the topposition in the reef. The story vividly demonstratedhow small things make a big difference in our livesand conveyed messages on several issues includingglobal warming and terrorism. At the end of the play, Reethu and the participantsof the play received a a standing ovation. On thenext day, The Hindustan Times and The Telegraphwere full of praise for the play.In addition to being enriched and refreshed bythis magnificent play, I enjoyed the royal hospitalityof my cousin and her affectionate husband, Dilip. Moreover, when I was taken round the city, I feltthrilled to see my old school, college and the housewhere I was brought up by my loving aunt anduncle. No visit to Kolkata is complete without going tothe Kali Temple at Kalighat. So, I had a tryst withit too and it was due to Her grace that I surfacedunscathed from the clutches of the pandas and thefrenzied crowd of devotees. Needless to say, I returnedhome with an abundance of sweet memories of myvisit which I will cherish forever.CORRIGENDUMWe are informed by the author of the article “SumanKalyanpur conferred prestigious Lata MangeshkarAward”, published in the February 2010 issue, thatthe first five lines on Page 16 should read as: “Jogginginto a flashback, Suman recalls how she sang thisplayback number ‘Kabhi Aaj Kabhi Kal’ in tandemwith Lata Mangeshkar, under the baton of composerHemant Kumar for the movie ‘Chaand’ (1959).” Heregrets that due to an oversight, the title of the moviewas incorrectly mentioned as ‘Baat Ek Raat Ki’. .Kanara Saraswat Vol. 91, No.3, March 201049
