Water Distribution System Valves2nd Quarter - FY 13BackgroundValves are exercised, rehabilitated, or replaced in order to improve their operating condition. This work occurs year round. Valve replacementsoccur in roadway locations during the normal construction season, and in off-road locations during the winter season. Valve exercising canoccur year round but is often displaced during the construction season. This is due to the fact that a large number of construction contractsinvolving rehabilitation, replacement, or new installation of water lines, requires valve staff to operate valves and assist with disinfection, dechlorination, pressure-testing, and final acceptance. Valve exercising can also be impacted due to limited redundancy in the water system;valve exercising cannot be performed in areas where there is only one source of water to the community meters or flow disruptions will occur.Operable PercentageType of Valve Inventory # FY13 to Date FY13 TargetsMain Line Valves 2,092 97.5% 92%Blow-Off Valves 1,206 95.4% 94%Air Release Valves 1,335 93.5% 92%Control Valves 48 100.0% 95%Key to Symbols:FY2013 Monthly TotalFY2013Cumulative TotalFY2013Target# of valves1500125010007505002500Main Line Valves ExercisedFY13 Target = 1,100J A S O N D J F M A M JDuring Q2 of FY13, staff exercised only 189 main line valvesdue to water quality issues at Fells Covered Storage, drainingand cleaning of Blue Hills tank number 2, and contractor supportfor water main filling, valve testing and pressure testing of newvalves on the Hultman Aqueduct rehab project.
