By Adam Farrell M.S., CSCStheonebrideguide.com • February – May 2013 {38}According to a recent Indiana University study, couples who exercise together are 34 percentmore likely to show up for workouts than thosewho work out alone. Even better, a Universityof Pittsburgh study showed that women whowork out with a partner lose a third moreweight than those who go it alone. Before yougo out and invite your man to join you in yourBikram Yoga class read a few of the ideas belowto get you and yours active and fit together.Adventure RacesRaces like the Spartan Run Race, the ToughMudder, the Muddy Buddy, and the WarriorDash are a lot of fun for couples who like torun, get really muddy, and work with others tofinish the race. One of my former trainers, KCDahlgren and her boyfriend Josh Lostetter completeda Tough Mudder Race in Victoria, TXlast January. KC said it was a great experiencefinishing with Josh. “Knowing that you helpedeach other through obstacles, challenges, andstruggles makes the end much sweeter. Knowingthat you couldn’t have finished the racewithout that other person and that they neededyou as well was a great feeling.” If you andyour partner like getting dirty, anadventure race may be what youare looking for.Stand Up PaddleBoardingAnother great outdooractivity that challengesyour core, balance andcardiovascular systemis Stand Up PaddleBoarding (SUP). SUPhas slowly been gainingpopularity in CorpusChristi for several yearsnow. It is a great activity forcouples to get outside and trysomething new. SUP can besomething you can both experiencetogether. The bayfront andthe canals on Padre Island andPort Aransas are great places toSUP or you can try the surf!grams like this will gradually prepare you so youcan enjoy your race day experience rather thanregret it. Keep in mind that the training togetheris just as important as finishing the race. Don’tworry about finishing the race together, justfinish and enjoy the feeling of accomplishingsomething as a couple. When picking an activity keep these suggestionsin mind:• Find an activity that both of you enjoy thatwill burn calories, build some lean tone muscle, and challenge you both so you both feel a senseof accomplishment.• Pick an activity that you both can enjoy andcan improve upon.• Avoid activities where one person is sodominant the other person doesn’t enjoy theexperience.• If you are better than your partner at an activity, but they want to improve, purchase thema few sessions with a coach or trainer. Ratherthan everyone having a bad experience, let them get some tips from a proso you can both have fun.• If there is no one laughing before, during, orafter the activity, it may not be the right activityfor both of you. You both need to enjoy theactivity for it to last.• Warm up and cool down together if you aregoing to the same place but are taking part indifferent activities.I hope that the ideas and suggestions above giveyou a spark to get active with your man. We allcould stand to add a little more activity to ournormal routine.Adam Farrell M.S.
