y Monica Sawyer, Editor photos by D&P Photographytheonebrideguide.com • February – May 2013 {4}My favorite family in the wedding business is theBorens. I've had a long, lovely friendship withPriscilla Boren of D&P Photography and she, herhusband Danney, son Marshall and daughter Janessaare always game to help me out, whether it be tophotograph an event, or video some random storyfor another one of my crazy projects. And I have tomention Bobby, who's office visits and super herocostumes I miss sincehe's getting all grown upnow! This business is reallyabout relationships:honoring friendships,the people who help youthe most, and lifting eachother up and showing theworld our best. I've beenthinking about Priscillaand her talent for a longtime and really wantedher to shoot anothercover for The One. TheFebruary cover seemedperfect since her familyis always so full of LOVE!If you've read past issues,you know I am also inlove with Josh Salinas andGreg Ybarra of Josh &Co. and Get Jeweled Productions.If people thinkI give them too muchcoverage, well, that's becausethey volunteer theirtime, work extremely hard, and I go to them becauseI can predict amazing results without having to eventhink about it. I LOVE them and their dedicationto excellence. The trio of Priscilla, Josh and Gregdreamed up this romantic cover, which is all aboutpassion, intimacy and style, embraced in a beautifulimage. It was probably the smoothest shoot I'veever been a part of thanks to Priscilla's sweetness andeasy nature, Josh and Greg's charms, and the helpinghands of Marshall.Josh Salinas hand-picked our cover models, SarahAngoori and boyfriend Christopher Llanas. Theywere great sports, allowing Josh to pose them in allkinds of positions on the floor to get the perfect,unique angle. Sarah graduated last May from TexasA&M-CC and currently works at the Aquarium aswell as my favorite date spot, The Yardarm restaurant.Chris was recently promoted to marketing directorat Suntide Credit Union.The One has really become about showcasing thebest, and Kari Morrisonat Julian Gold, who is thebest in the local fashionbusiness, was so helpful toloan us two luscious gownsfor the shoot. The covergown is by Vera Wang, retailingfor $6,500 and thegown pictured to the left isby Amasale, retailing for$3850. Bobby Buentellofrom Men's Wearhouse,a long-time contributor,provided the handsometuxes including one fromVera Wang's new tux line(sorry, not pictured).One of my favorite partsof all the cover shoot experiencesover the lastyear or so has been droolingover the jewels GoldMaster Jewelers brings.This time, they loanedus so much bling, BeverlyPatlan, an associate at Gold Master, had to personallyescort the jewels and watch over them. We'retalking over $118,000 worth of jewels people! Wowzers!Our model showed off an 18k Giovani SethBridal Collection ring with 2.55 carats of diamondsvaluing $17,710. Haytayan was the designer of theday as we ogled over pieces from that collection:an 18k necklace with 56 carats of multi-coloredgems valuing $50,000, an 18k white gold necklaceencrusted with 1.63 carats of diamonds valuing$12,237, an 18k white gold ring with 1.76 caratsof diamonds valuing $12,069, 14k white gold

chandelier earrings encrusted with1.57 carats of, you guessed it, morediamonds, valuing $4,251 and lastbut not least, an 18k white goldlemon quartz and diamondring with 3 carats of diamondsvaluing $22,000! Diamondsare a girl's best friend after all.Thank you Gold Master! Youare the master, and welcome tojoin us on a shoot anytime!This was a fun, easy-breezyshoot and I can't wait to pairup with this group again!Visit dpphoto.biz, juliangold.com, goldmasterjewelers.com and theonebrideguide.com for more info aboutour cover contributors. y MarilynNashdo-it-yourself wedding hasA many benefits, saving on yourwedding budget being probablythe biggest reason. You can set yourpriorities, from most importantdetail to least important detail,according to you and yourfiancés style and dreams.A DIY wedding can rangefrom all different types ofstyles. There is the classic, traditionalwedding, which wouldalso include vintage or Victorianweddings. Or if you a more moderncouple, you might follow a moretrendy style. Maybe you wouldhave a vineyard wedding theme,a beach wedding or you maychoose to tie the knot at your favoritevacation spot. The question ofstyle also dictates whether your detailswill be formal or informal. Mosttraditional, classic, vintage or Victorianwedding styles would call for amore formal event. While modernstyles could accommodate aninformal attire. Whatever style youdecide to choose, make sure it isthe wedding of YOUR DREAMS!Spend a lot of time researchingoptions, planning out steps andcosts, and you will be on your wayto a very personal wedding day!Invitations:A good place to dive in with ado-it-yourself wedding is with thefirst impression - the invitation.Because invitations are so personal,this is a great fit for the DIYcouple. A new trend is for thecouple to personalize artwork ontheir invites, showing pictures ofthemselves at their venue or evenincluding a drawing or caricatureof themselves.Many couples are choosing vintageor custom stamps with a specialmeaning, a saying, a hobbyor state they live in. Now you candesign your own postage stampthrough the US Postal Service atpictureitpostage.com. Talk aboutfirst impression!Many couples can really go all-outfrom start to finish with the invitations,depending on how inventiveyou are, creating a piece of artto send to each guest. You candesign your own and use specialpaper and get them printed at alocal printer like QuikPrint, or if youplan on printing your own invitesat home and don't really want todesign them, you will need "printableinvitations." is where the design is already donefor you and you order the cards andenvelopes through a company.You just add the text by usingyour computer, print, andvoilà, beautiful invites!There are many companiesthat now sellthem. Printablepress.com is a good one. Ipersonally hooked upwith cardsandpockets.com,a companythat will sell and printfor you. I give my clientswholesale prices throughmy business. They also sellDIY envelopes, table cards andmore . Paper-source.com is also a greatcompany for buying special paper andenvelopes. One of my personal favoritecompanies is Vistaprint. They printstamps, invitations, photo books, and ahost of other great wedding ideas forvery reasonable prices.Flowers:Taking on your wedding flowers cansave you hundreds of dollars. Knowingsome basics will make this a fun andbeautiful experience. There are lots ofclasses you can take on the interneton wedding flowers. Youtube.com isa great place to find visual classes.I like classes with hands-on training. Lookfor classes being given at craft stores orsometimes even from florists who sellin bulk (and I personally teachthe basics of wedding flowersas well).For any DIY project,make sure you do a trialrun, especially for flowerarranging or food.For fresh flower arrangements,Costco is a goodsource to get flowersFedXed. H-E-B Blooms alsowill take bulk orders. Shoparound. Sometimes even flowershops will give you a good deal. Forsilk wedding flowers, I love Hobby Lobby.However, there are many companiesonline now offering bulk prices.Food:The largest expense of your weddingcan be the reception. One way couplesare saving money on their reception isfiguring out the food themselves. If youchoose to do a sit-down dinner, youcan still make it lovely and inexpensiveby doing it yourself. Some brides havehad the main course catered, and thenhad family and friends put together theappetizer and salad courses to make anelegant and economical meal. Cupcakesversus a wedding cake can beeconomical and not as daunting to puttogether. You can find cupcake holdersonline to make a beautiful arrangementof sweets.For buffet-style, a fun option is for thecouple to serve childhood favoritefoods. The list is endless and can be veryfun for guests: tea sandwiches, Twinkies,a candy "bar," chocolate fountain, etc.Another food trend is offering a champagnebar, where guests can mix theirown bubbly creation using organicpurees, fresh fruit, and edible flowers.How fun!!Of course, the internet offers a plethoraof options and inspiration. Check outpinterest.com and stylemepretty.com.And the DIY queen, Martha Stewart, isstill a great resource for keeping up withamazing DIY projects.Whatever DIY projects you decide todo, it will be uniquely yours!!! That is whyDIY can be so special to you and yourguests. The biggest piece of advice Ican give is START EARLY! DIY can takelonger to plan and execute, but can beworth every effort and possibly save youmoney! Good luck!Contact info@theonebrideguide.com totalk to Marilyn Nash about her classes orDIY consulting services.theonebrideguide.com • February – May 2013 {9}

Why did you choose to have adestination wedding?Bride: I grew up in New Orleans sinceI was 10. I was born in Honduras butwhen my mom and I came to the U.S.we went to New Orleans and that’swhere I went to elementary school, highschool and even college. My mom livesthere still. She has her business there,and I wanted to share the New Orleansculture and everything I grew up with,with our guests. Plus, I wanted it to alsobe a fun trip for our guests... which turnsout it was!!! Groom: Because it was mywife’s home and her dream.Biggest challenge about planning adestination wedding:Bride: Oh my Lord, where to begin!! It wasa HUGE challenge. The biggest hurdlewas finding a location. I had an amazingmaid of honor who scouted numerouslocations for me. She would take picturesand email me all the prices and menus(along with her opinion on them)... butI just couldn’t go off of any of that... Ifelt I needed to be there in person tomake that decision. So I flew out to NewOrleans one weekend in March and metwith the top 5 places I liked the best. Andthe first one I saw was the one we wentwith because it was perfect. I wanted thewedding to be fun. Pat O’Briens cateredthe food and tended the open bar (theyserved Hurricanes - which Pat O’brienscreated - cyclones, purple peopleeaters, plus a premium bar) so it was sucha fun party! I couldn’t have done anyof this without my maid of honor, AaronLabadie. Lucky for me, she’s patient!And thank God for the internet. Orderingonline helped make things easier.Favorite detail:Bride: The Second Line! It’s a NewOrleans tradition: a walking parade. Wehad a band that led the parade andthe New Orleans Police Departmentstopped traffic in the middle of theFrench Quarter while every single oneof our guests paraded thru the streetsincluding Bourbon Street. It was a halfmile parade! Our guests wore thebeads and waved white handkerchiefs(wedding favors) with a drink in hand.Even total strangers joined in the paradeand celebrated with us. It was the besttime! Groom: Definitely the parade andthe setting of old town New Orleans.Favorite moment:Bride: Saying my vows to my husband.It was a very emotional moment.Groom: When I saw my wife walkingtoward me while I waited atthe altar.Funniest/most embarrassing moment:Bride & Groom: The best man Jason’sspeech! He was nervous, forgot hisspeech and ad-libbed... and gavemortifying details. I had to wrap him up!If you could do one thing over:Bride: I would have invited EVERYONEthat I knew... it was such a greatcelebration. I wish everyone I knewcould have been there!Groom: The whole day! As stressful asit was, I would do it all over again!Advice for future brides or grooms:Bride: Be very organized! Keep receipts,all emails and make a list of vendorsand share that list with your maid ofhonor and mom... just in case somethinghappens. If you have a list ahead oftime, you don’t have to stress out lookingfor names and numbers. And on yourwedding day, relax and enjoy!Groom: Ladies: try and take it easy onyour men! We really do try and give youthe world. Men: Have fun and rememberto stay out of trouble and let her have herway especially on and around that day.How to make your spouse happy:Bride: Tell him you hate shopping!Groom: Well... just being the bestman that I can be usually does it! Alsobringing her chocolate and Doritos.You look forward to the most:Bride: I look forward to our wholelife together. I don’t know what’sto come, but I can’t wait toenjoy it all with him and withour son! Groom: Raising afamily and conquering newgoals together.Other information for couples:Bride: You know you’ve found“The One” when you’re willing to notwalk away after a fight. It took meyears to find the man that I couldstick with. Groom: Don't take life forgranted, but live day by day makingthe best choices for you as a couple.Always try and put your spouse first nomatter what. Life gets hard. y Omar Lopezveryone remembers when television’sfavorite heroine, CarrieBradshaw of Sex and The City fame,decides to have her wedding at the NewYork Public Library. Her choice exudes class,dignity and distinction. Exchanging vowsamidst volumes of history, surrounded bystories and legends – magnificent! Thedecision to marry in a venue full of richnessand substance remains the ultimate showof style and grace.theonebrideguide.com • February – May 2013 {28}For Texas brides, that same tone of grandeurand heritage can be found at theCorpus Christi Museum of Science and History.Probably best known by locals as thesite for Saturday morning treasure huntsand gem stone pencils, the Museum hasmatured into a stunning historical venuethat regularly hosts special events. TheMuseum is currently undergoing a metamorphosis,one that includes a new executivedirector from Chicago, a seasonedveteran in the Museum industry.Carole Rehtmeyer, who has been inCorpus Christi for just a short time, said theCorpus Christi Museum of Science andHistory, and its contents, make the Museumthe perfect choice for a wedding venue.“I love this museum – I mean I just fell inlove with the venue when I first saw it,”Rehtmeyer said. “There is a charm to theMuseum that makes this place memorable.Something about a wedding takingplace in a historical museum... it’s veryromantic. The idea of a new marriageliving on through history and starting ina place that’s historical - it really has adepth of meaning that can not be foundin a banquet hall.”Yet the Museum offers nearly all of thesame amenities as a large banquet hall –perhaps even more.The building can seat 1,000 people for anevent. It contains several spaces whichcan accommodate intimate weddings orlavish affairs. The Museum houses its owncatering company, Diamond Point Catering.And exhibits can be moved to createa couple’s desired floor plan.“The Museum is elegant and cost effective,”Rehtmeyer said. “There are so manyoptions for couples. We have a beautifulpavilion overlooking the bay. We canconfigure spaces to meet couples’ needs.And we make sure that the desired toneof the wedding is achieved by hosting theevent in the right space in our building.”Rehtmeyer said the most obvious choicefor a romantic, historical wedding is theDome Room. Located in the “Gallery ofCultural Encounters,” the Dome Room ishome to the one of the most beautifulhistorical artifacts in all of South Texas:An authentic, 16th century, carved woodceiling from Castile, Spain.The view to the top is breathtaking.

“Spaces like the Dome Roomare incredible for weddings,”Brian Campbell, Director ofCatering for Diamond Point,said. “It sets a tone of elegancein the room that mostbrides want for a wedding.A new union like a wedding,surrounded by history andgenerations, makes a powerfulstatement.”Campbell said the cateringside of a wedding amplifiesany tone the couple desires.The ceiling is pieced together with18 curved pieces to create the dome.On each piece sits hundreds of decorativecarvings, which were broken into piecesfor transport and then meticulously piecedtogether upon arrival to the United States.The exterior of the dome is copper.“The Dome Room has a patina to itthat sets the tone for any event is hosts,”Rehtmeyer said. “It immediately creates anold-world feeling of Spanish magnificence.”Curved archways supported by sculpturedpillars create the entrances to the DomeRoom. Porcelain tiles featuring crests ofmajestic lions and stalwart castles interrupta mosaic of Spanish tiles on the floor. Thewalls display portraits of historical scenesassociated with the Spanish explorationto the Gulf of Mexico. One wall boasts thelineage of explorers who sailed the oceanfor the New World, including ChristopherColumbus, Alonso Alvarez de Pineda andFrancisco Vasquez de Coronado toname a few. And at the entrance, a lifesize portrait of Louis XIV established theregal atmosphere of the space – rich andperfect for a wedding.Recently for the opening ofa science exhibit geared towardschildren that involvedlarger than life insect models,catering staff wore whitelab coats with goggles andserved bug-shaped cookiesand ice cold milk served intest tubes!In the next few months, moreinteractive spaces will be addedto the Museum – spacesthat educate, and entertainas well. Rehtmeyer said newexhibits and improved spaceplanning all add to the uniquespace that sits on the CorpusChristi bayfront.“We’re looking to the future to turn theCorpus Christi Museum of Science andHistory into a world-class interactive experiencemuseum, one that patrons canenjoy for generations,” she said. “That kindof legacy alone makes the Museum theperfect venue for weddings.”Contact the Corpus Christi Museumof Science and History by calling(361) 826-4667 or go to ccmuseum.com.The museum is located at 1900 N.Chaparral St., Corpus Christi, TX 78401theonebrideguide.com • February – May 2013 {29}

y Aubrey Winstonreflect the bride and groom’s personalities.It may take a second to showdad that each wedding is differentbut if you go about it in a way to showhim why you’re implementing certainthings, he will understand. He just wantsyou to be happy.Mom is another story. She had her weddingand now she wants you to haveyour perfect wedding. Many times, thisis an opportunity for her to have anddo things she didn’t have at her wedding.Mother/daughter relationshipsare so complex. It just comes down topicking your battles. It’s ok to speakup when she wants to wear a hot pinkdress when the wedding is purple butwhy not let her and her best friend createand print those programs. It’s oneless thing for you to worry about. If youstep back and remember that it’s yourwedding day, you will forget the pettydrama. Years later, you don’t want toremember tension with your motherduring this special time.It may be good to have a pre-planningmeeting to go through possible stressfultopics before they become issues. And guys,don’t ask WHY you need four differenttypes of spoons. You neverknow when a spoon shortage is goingto happen! But seriously, registeringis a good thing. Your friends andfamily are provided with a list of giftitems you actually want, instead ofplaying the guessing game about whatin the world you might need for yournew kitchen. Register for more thanyou think you’ll need and make sureyou have lots of affordable items forall ranges of income levels. Keep thislist handy while you are shopping anddon’t get overwhelmed. theonebrideguide.com • February – May 2013 {36}TheThe first weekend of the new yearwas a biggie for The One. It wasour first wedding and marriageconference: The One Inside Out.For years, vendors have been begging TheOne Bride Guide to put on our own weddingshow and we finally decided to pull the trigger.However, when we set out to plan thisbig wedding event, we wanted to be different.We thought a conference-style eventwould benefit vendors and couples alike -offering more educational experiences onhow to plan your wedding, and give the vendorsand guests a day of consultations ratherthan a day of chaos.We wanted to enrich the event experienceas much as possible, so we teamed up withRepublic National Distributing to create thefirst-ever "Grooms Lounge" with signaturedrink tastings and a cigar bar. The Vanity BoxSalon provided a "Spa Pampering Experience"giving chair massages as well as hair,makeup and nail consultations. By Adam Farrell M.S., CSCStheonebrideguide.com • February – May 2013 {38}According to a recent Indiana University study,couples who exercise together are 34 percentmore likely to show up for workouts than thosewho work out alone. Even better, a Universityof Pittsburgh study showed that women whowork out with a partner lose a third moreweight than those who go it alone. Before yougo out and invite your man to join you in yourBikram Yoga class read a few of the ideas belowto get you and yours active and fit together.Adventure RacesRaces like the Spartan Run Race, the ToughMudder, the Muddy Buddy, and the WarriorDash are a lot of fun for couples who like torun, get really muddy, and work with others tofinish the race. One of my former trainers, KCDahlgren and her boyfriend Josh Lostetter completeda Tough Mudder Race in Victoria, TXlast January. KC said it was a great experiencefinishing with Josh. “Knowing that you helpedeach other through obstacles, challenges, andstruggles makes the end much sweeter. Knowingthat you couldn’t have finished the racewithout that other person and that they neededyou as well was a great feeling.” If you andyour partner like getting dirty, anadventure race may be what youare looking for.Stand Up PaddleBoardingAnother great outdooractivity that challengesyour core, balance andcardiovascular systemis Stand Up PaddleBoarding (SUP). SUPhas slowly been gainingpopularity in CorpusChristi for several yearsnow. It is a great activity forcouples to get outside and trysomething new. SUP can besomething you can both experiencetogether. The bayfront andthe canals on Padre Island andPort Aransas are great places toSUP or you can try the surf!grams like this will gradually prepare you so youcan enjoy your race day experience rather thanregret it. Keep in mind that the training togetheris just as important as finishing the race. Don’tworry about finishing the race together, justfinish and enjoy the feeling of accomplishingsomething as a couple.When picking an activity keep these suggestionsin mind:• Find an activity that both of you enjoy thatwill burn calories, build some lean tone muscle,and challenge you both so you both feel a senseof accomplishment.• Pick an activity that you both can enjoy andcan improve upon.• Avoid activities where one person is sodominant the other person doesn’t enjoy theexperience.• If you are better than your partner at an activity,but they want to improve, purchase thema few sessions with a coach or trainer. Ratherthan everyone having a bad experience,let them get some tips from a proso you can both have fun.• If there is no one laughing before, during, orafter the activity, it may not be the right activityfor both of you. You both need to enjoy theactivity for it to last.• Warm up and cool down together if you aregoing to the same place but are taking part indifferent activities.I hope that the ideas and suggestions above giveyou a spark to get active with your man. We allcould stand to add a little more activity to ournormal routine.Adam Farrell M.S. Ifyou and your partner are not yetfit enough to enjoy running the5K today, look for programs likethe Couch to 5K program. Pro-photos courtesy ISUPCC

All photos by New Wave PhotographyIf any guy needs a lesson in how to propose, just take a look at BlakeLillard's story of how he asked his girlfriend, Shannon Tatum to marry himright before Christmas on Sunday, December 23rd, 2012 at the historic RitzTheatre downtown. A "First Friday" turned out to be the first day of the restof their lives."I have known about The Ritz for awhile, as I have always been interestedin the history of downtown Corpus Christi," Blake says. "It wasn't until a recentvisit during a First Friday ArtWalk that we both walked in and realizedwhat an amazing place it was. I had no idea what to expect walking in,but knew that it had been vacant for years before Corpus Christi PATCHstarted trying to restore it."The Ritz has long been a place for romance. Many people have reportedto CCPATCH, the non-profit restoring the 1929 relic, of first dates and firstkisses at The Ritz from its movie palace days in the 30s and 40s, to firstconcerts when The Ritz Theatre was known as The Ritz Music Hall in the70's. Artists such as The Pointer Sisters, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson andmore have played there. Elvis was even reported to have played at TheRitz when he was touring as the free after-movie entertainment before hebecame famous in the early 1950s. Organizers with CCPATCH are raisingmoney to restore The Ritz back to what it looked like in 1929 and hopefullygive many more couples their own "firsts" once again.theonebrideguide.com • February – May 2013 {54}"As we turned the corner from the empty lobby into the theatre, it wasintriguing and dramatic," Blake says. "Even though the years of abandonmenthad taken its toll, I could still feel the energy from so many sold outevents in its past. It was magical."The Ritz had quickly found a place in Blake's heart... "After months of tryingto think of a unique and special idea for a proposal location, I finallyknew The Ritz was the place. Now the only hard part was seeing if it wouldeven be possible. I finally got in contact with Monica Sawyer, President ofCCPATCH, who was a tremendous help."Blake didn't stop at finding the perfect place. He created a scene that fitThe Ritz and also displayed how special Shannon is to him. "My favorite partof the proposal was getting to make the large marquee letters that spelledout 'Will you marry me,' even though they took much longer then I expected.And my favorite part of the actual proposal was Shannon's face when Iclapped to signal all the lights to be turned on, which showed the sign andrevealed that her family and our closest friends were there as well."After all that hard work and preparation, Shannon said "YES!"To find out more about The Ritz, call 361-887-6055 or visit www.ccritz.comor visit The Ritz at a First Friday ArtWalk from 5:30-9:00pm, 715 N.
