Padre Principal...a Message from MirizioGreetings!PSAT…meet the deadline“EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING”Welcome back. There is a real electricity in the air as we begin another school year here at Marcos deNiza. For the first time in eight years, we are officially over 2000 students. The good news is we aregrowing; students desire to attend Marcos de Niza for our excellence in academics, athletics and activities. On the flip side our classes are full, and we ask for your patience as our teachers and students settleinto a routine. We just received some very good news in the academic arena. We have again met the standards for Adequate Yearly Progresswithin the No Child Left Behind guidelines . This is achieved by improvement on the AIMS test scores in math, reading andwriting as well as improvement in our dropout/graduation rates. This again is a wonderful achievement, and we are very proud ofour teachers, staff and students.Speaking of excellent students, this year we have three National Merit Finalists—Stephanie White, Lydia Spielberg andNatalie Schmidt. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments as they represent the cream of the crop in their pursuit ofAcademic Excellence. In addition, Marcos has added to the curriculum this year many challenging courses, such as Jr. APEnglish, Sr. AP English, AP World History, AP American History, Aspire to Teach, Interdisciplinary Studies (Academic Decathlon),We the People, and a TV Production Class. We are pleased at the students desire to excel. For those new to our school and district, let me share some of our students’ accomplishments from last year. Our athletic and activitiesprograms have flourished. In all sports programs there has been an overall increase in Padre participation. For the firsttime ever, the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams qualified for State. Last year two of our Mdn golfers were named the numberone golfers in the region—Mike Sentell and Melanie Boyles. In addition, the Girls Golf team placed 3rd at State and were celebratedas the top team from the public schools. Both the Boys and Girls Basketball teams went to State last year. Of course,Wrestling won its third straight State Championship. Our clear outstanding performances in extracurricular activities has alsotudent option...testing outmade it possible for the MdN Band to participate in the 2004 Fiesta Bowl Parade, for the orchestra to tour Germany, and for thechoir and drama students to receive accolades for their excellent spring musical. Padre pride and excellence from our studentswill hopefully bring continued success in this next school year.Something we will continue here at Marcos de Niza is our closed campus during lunch for all freshman and sophomores. Onlyjuniors and seniors with the proper I.D. will be allowed to leave campus for lunch.I would also like to remind all parents that the student and faculty parking lots are NOT student drop off areas. Pleaseuse the bus drop off on Westchester, the west side of Lakeshore or any of the side streets. We have worked closely withthe traffic engineers in the city of Tempe in order to reline Lakeshore for safety concerns. As always, I welcome any conversation you wish to have with me regarding Marcos de Niza and the pursuit of excellence wehave established here. Please feel free to call me at (480) 838-3200 x 47651.We thank you for your support.Frank Mirizio, PrincipalPSAT’s will be taken on Saturday, October 16th, 2004, at 8:00 a.m. in the Marcos de Niza High School Auditorium. The new online catalog provides the students with faster access to andmore information about their library’s book and av collection. The searches are simple to conduct and the results are easy to understand.Included with the purchase was “Title Peek,” an Internet service that links the books collection to graphic representationof book covers and additional information about the book such as a plot summary and information about the author. Destinyalso provides teachers with the opportunity to look at state curriculum standards and identify library resources that might be helpfulin teaching the concepts. MdN librarians will be conducting staff workshops to assist teachers in using the standards componentof Destiny. Currently, the school’s collection is available to students and staff only inside the district firewall.Page 6PADRE PRIDE

Teen Read Week...“It’s Alive!”The MdN LRTC will celebrate Teen Read Week, Oct. 7 with “IT’S ALIVE! @ your library.” Students will havethe opportunity to participate in games and win prizes by identifying “shocking” facts. The library also offers amnestyto any students who return long overdue library materials by waiving the service charge.Parents, it’s a great time to clean the cobwebs and the missing library books from under car seats and beds.Peer Artwork...check it outStudents Enjoy Peer ArtworkStudents are enjoying the artwork of their peers as they check out graphic novels (a highly illustrated, high interest genre) from the library this year. Students in Art and Design and Advanced Artand Design decorated two book carts with animated characters to create an appealing browsing area.In addition, the art students created original bookmarks using the graphic novel concept. This yearthe library is building on the success of the graphic novels carts and will be designing a poetry cart.Reading… library findingsMdN students are reading moreA Learning Resources and Technology Center (Library) end of the year report indicates an increase in reading over the past year. The charts below compare circulation between the 2003-2004 and 2002-2003 school year in two categories: the numbers ofitems circulated and the types of patrons circulating the items.Use counts by Item Type: 2003 - 04 2002 – 03 % increaseHardbound Books 4174 2522 65.5%fiction/non-fictionPaperback Books 5774 2755 109.6%Use count by Patron type: 2003 – 04 2003 – 03 % increaseFaculty and inter-district 3013 2369 27.2%Students 8762 4392 99.5%The highly significant increase in circulation can be attributed to improved budget for selection of high interest materials for studentsas well as campus wide efforts to improve reading, a school improvement goal.Ms. Schaefer...fun and adventurousTraveling the Southern HemisphereMarcos de Niza’s health teacher Joanne Schaefer is taking a year's leave of absenceto travel the southern hemisphere.
