Padre Principal...a Message from MirizioEXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AND LEARNINGA Message from the Principal- Mr. Frank MirizioDear Parents,As we approach the end of the first semester, we can take Padre pride in our accomplishments in the classroom, on our athleticfields, and in our concert halls. The student body this year has taken responsibility quite seriously.I would like to take a moment to address attendance concerns for students involved in extracurricular activities. As a district weare enforcing a policy of zero unexcused absences on the day of games, competitions, concerts and/or plays. Parents, please callin for your students on the same day they are absent. Students with unexcused absences will not be allowed to participate in thatevening’s activities. If a student needs to miss a class for a doctor’s appointment, a funeral, etc., they may be allowed to participateif the absence has been excused during regular school hours. More importantly, we will NOT be accepting an excuse at“game time” just before the event itself. It must be called in ahead of time in order to preserve the integrity of the attendanceprocess itself. Please call Mr. Brent Rincon in Athletics with any questions. As a reminder to any parent who wishes to attend our Site Council meetings, they take place on the first Wednesday of everymonth at 4:30 p.m. in Room #255. All are welcome to observe this process.Parents, this semester we have several dates for the AIMS tests. Please see the details inside this newsletter since attendance andperformance on these tests is essential. We have been rated as a “highly performing” school based on our test scores, and wewould like to continue to strive to reach the goal of an “excelling” rating. As always, if you have any concerns and would like to talk about them, please call me at 480 –838-3200 x 47651. We thank youfor your children and your support.Frank Mirizio, PrincipalLibrary News...alternative search enginesTo Google or not to Google…what’s the question?Workshop for Parents of JuniorsTuesday, January 25. 2005, 6:30 p.m.Computer Lab 118 (Bldg. 100)Right or wrong? While at camp, HERO members were introduced to self-motivation seminarsand team building exercises with other FCCLA chapters throughout the state. Thiswas one of the many exciting events in which the HERO club will be participating thisyear. Upcoming events include Corporate Games at Kiwinis Park with other Tempedistrict FCCLA members, where students compete in a series of team building games, and our annual Spring Leadership Conference in downtown Phoenix. MdN HEROmembers also devote their time and raise money for community service projects such asAdopt-a-Family and Christmas Angels. The HERO members are energized and lookingforward to a great and rewarding year!Academic Decathlon...hard work pays off!Just what does it mean to be a student in the InterdisciplinaryStudies course taught for the firsttime on MdN’s campus by Mrs. Jane Parker, former Academic Decathlon Regional Coordinator? It means giving up leisure reading for theduration of the season and knowing more operathan a high school teen ever needs to know. Theoryof Chaos, dark energy, and anti-matter cluttersthe brain with a big-bang. And, of course, itstill means giving up your lunch hour for the 3 rdyear in a row, just to practice speech and interviewtechniques. It means challenging yourselfin ten difficult subject areas to compete in invitationaltournaments and the Arizona AcademicDecathlon competition, but it also means developingyour talents and study skills in preparationfor college and for life. This year’s club and classmates who took the challenge are freshmen—June Yoon, Florian Qendro, JohnGaches; sophomores—Natty Spielberg, Andree Chea; juniors—Kyle Duncan, Azza Abusief, Michelle Lewis, Frederic Cannon;seniors—Carlos Ballesteros, Brittany Sanner, Natalie Shvetsova, Erica Staller, Melissa Tsang, Sandy Wang, Mauricio Leon(Team Captain), Michael Lee, Marrissa Tanner, Ilda Gonzalez, and Ross Griffin. At the first invitational scrimmage of the year held at Mt. Pointe High School on November 14 th and 15 th , the Marcos de Nizastudents proudly accepted sixteen individual awards: for ART—Mauricio Leon (Scholastic 3rd Place), Ross Griffin (Varsity 3rdPlace); ESSAY—Carlos Ballesteros (Honors 3rd Place), Ross Griffin (Varsity 2nd Place); INTERVIEW—Ross Griffin (Varsity3rd Place), Mauricio Leon (Scholastic 3rd Place); LANGUAGE & LITERATURE—Carlos Ballesteros (Honors 3rd Place);MATH—Andree Chea (Honors 3rd Place); MUSIC—Mauricio Leon (Scholastic 3rd Place), Carlos Ballesteros (Honors 3rdPlace), Ross Griffin (Varsity 2nd Place); SOCIAL SCIENCE—Ross Griffin (Varsity 2nd Place), Carlos Ballesteros (Honors 2ndPlace); SPEECH—Ilda Gonzalez (Varsity 1st Place); and SUPER QUIZ—Mauricio Leon (Scholastic 3rd Place), Carlos Ballesteros(Honors 2nd Place). Overall, the team came in 4 th place, which is a great accomplishment since this is only the club’s thirdyear in existence at Marcos and its first year to provide a class to help in preparation for the competitions. So what’s next for this band of knowledge seekers? They have a test-off in December to decide the semi-final 12 decathletes forthe team; another invitational scrimmage in January to decide the final 9 decathletes who will compete in a regional competitionin February and the state competition in March.PADRE PRIDEPage 13
