Thisprogram, which emphasizes the core subjects of reading, writing and math, is made available to a selectnumber of students who have been identified as needingan extra nudge to get a successful start in theirhigh school career. And yet, those students whoaccept the challenge of being at school before classesbegin at 7:30 a.m. and staying until 12:15 p.m. Mondaythrough Friday are gaining a lot more than just ahead start in their high school career. They are ableto earn a .5 (half) of an elective credit upon completingand passing the program, which has a monumentaladvantage, since the district’s graduation requirementshave increased to 23 credits! They will alsoreceive the additional perks of reducing the stress oftransition between middle school and high schoolwhile establishing a positive connection with caringstaff members, becoming familiar with their highschool campus and receiving follow-up services theirfreshman year. The students’ days are compact as they rotate betweentheir three 85 minute class periods. However, they still have time to socialize as they get two breaksand a built in award program where they gather withtheir peers to eat pizza, play video games and justenjoy being freshmen. The students are awarded withvarious incentives throughout the program, whichinclude getting all their initial school supplies, receivinga Summer Bridge t-shirt, USB drive and a backpack, besides having the opportunity to listen to specialinformative and motivational speakers. At the conclusion of the program, students and parentswere asked for their feedback. Here’s one student’sresponse to program. “What I liked about theSummer Bridge Program was being able to get aheadand get credit. I realized that I should go for it and thefact that it was only for a whole month of summer wasnot bad either. Also meeting new teachers andfriends from other schools boosted my confidence. Ithelped me become outgoing and what I learned will bevery useful when school officially starts!” One of ourparents reported, “This was a good opportunity for myson to become familiar with the campus and teachers. It provided him with the knowledge about the caliber ofwork that will be expected of him. It was good for himto get to know the teachers & be comfortable withthem. This is a great program and I hope it will beavailable for my younger son.”This was the third year that the Summer Bridge Programhas been funded by a grant through AT&T andas in the past, it has made an immense impact notonly on the students but also on the families. Ourspecial thanks goes to AT&T for their assistance inhelping our students increase their academic achievement.

Parent Pages...NPLB workshops2011-2012NPLB(No Parent Left Behind)University WorkshopsParents and educators throughout the nation have heard thephrase of “family engagement”, but just what does that reallymean and more importantly, what does it look like? In elementaryschool, parents participated by being room mothers, baking cupcakesor sewing costumes for the class play. In high school, familyengagement takes on another persona and one where the parentsmay not appear to be as visible as they were in elementaryschool. However, that doesn’t mean that family engagementdoesn’t exist and that the schools, families and communitiesshouldn’t still share responsibilities of working and communicatingtogether.Tempe Union’s NPLB (No Parent Left Behind) University is becominga leader in family engagement by offering an assortmentof workshops which are designed to help parents and caringadults stay involved with school related information besides socialand emotional trends that may affect the daily lives of their adolescents. This is being done through partnerships with the local andnational speakers who are presenting workshops on a variety oftopics. For instance, our workshops range from academic topicssuch as how to improve your classroom performance and the “howto(s)” of preparing and paying for college, to a personal story ofsurvival as one of our speakers candidly shares what it is like tolose a child to alcohol poisoning. National speakers such as SeanMorley (aka Val Venis, a WWE professional wrestler) will addressthe topic of prescription drugs while Ron Glodoski, an author andnational expert on bullying, teasing and name-calling, will sharehis valuable insights on that topic. In summary, whatever workshopor workshops that you decide to attend, I promise that youwill go away with information that you can utilize. Please join NPLB University as we practice our mission statementof “Keeping In Touch” by providing workshops for our teens/tweens and their families in order to get connected, stay informedand become empowered. Let NPLB University help inthe movement to clarify what family engagement will look like inour district as it assists our families and community with valuableinformation.Topic:2010-2011 2011 NO PARENT LEFT BEHIND WORKSHOPSDate/Time:Location:Presenter(s):Topic:Date/Time:Location:Presenter(s):Topic:Date/Time:Location:Presenter(s):Topic:Date/Time:Location:Presenter(s):Topic:Date/Time:Location:Presenter(s):Topic:Date/Time:Location:Presenter(s):ScriptDanger: Sean Morley's (aka Val Venis) Personal Storyabout the Danger of Prescription DrugsSaturday, September 10, 2011Refreshments at 9:30 a.m./Workshop 10:00 to 11:30 p.m.Marcos de Niza High School-AuditoriumSean Morley aka Val Venis-WWE WrestlerHelping Teens Build Resilience:Bouncing Back From Hard TimesTuesday, September 13, 2011Refreshments at 6:00/Workshop 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.Marcos De Niza High School-Room 255John L.
