The Vineyard, Fall Edition, 2007The Gang of FourThe 2006’sare Stunning!Marcel Lapierre, proprietor ; Jean-Paul Thevenet; Guy“Max” Breton, proprietor & Jean Foillard“The tasting I conducted in Marcel Lapierre’s courtyard was one of the great experiences ofmy life. The Gang of Four, composed of Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, Guy Breton (“Max”),and Jean-Paul Thevenet, are capable of producing superb, eye-popping Beaujolais. Readerswith a propensity to believe that Beaujolais is not serious wine will find their preconceivednotions shattered if they take the trouble to taste one of these Morgons…These Morgonsare delicious young, and can age remarkably well, as evidenced by a recently tasted 1985from Marcel Lapierre. It is awesomely rich, full-flavored, extremely complex, and hasevolved better than many of the Burgundies from the Côte d’Or…The art for Lapierre andthe other three members of the Gang of Four is to respect the fruit. Unlike the vast majorityof their neighbors in the Beaujolais, the Gang of Four harvest moderate yields by hand, uselittle sulphur, if any, almost never chaptalise, and have never acidified. Furthermore, thesewines are neither fined nor filtered…this philosophy can lead to some of the finestBeaujolais ever crafted.” Robert Parker2006 Domaine Guy Breton Morgon__________________________________ 24.992006 Domaine Jean Foillard Morgon Cote du Py__________________________ 24.992006 Domaine Marcel Lapierre Morgon_ ______________________________ 24.992006 Domaine Thevenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes_ ________________________ 24.99PG. 30 | Phone 1-800-491-3438 • Local 417-883-4066 • FAX 417-881-0036

These stunning cuvées represent goodvalues for what they are. The dense amber-colored nonvintageMuscat exhibits a sweet nose of toffee, maplesyrup, and figs along with huge body, and no cloyingsweetness because of good acidity. The non-vintageTokay (Muscadelle) reveals a lighter amber color in additionto burnt/roasted notes of camphor, scorched earth, prunes, figs, caramel, and marmalade. Its full-bodiedsweetness is beautifully balanced by acidity.”Wine AdvocateChambersRare Muscat_______________________ half 249.99Rated 100/100, Wine AdvocateGrand Muscadelle___________________ half 99.99Rated 98/100, Wine AdvocateGrand Muscat______________________ half 99.99Rated 99/100, Wine AdvocateMuscadelle_______________________ half 14.99Rated 92/100, Wine AdvocateMuscat_ _________________________ half 14.99Rated 95/100, Wine Advocate“William Chambers’s offerings, which are among thegreatest fortified whites in the world, basically elicit thesame comments as well as nearly identical scores everyyear. I was simply going to write…blah, blah, blah, blah…but I thought that might not be sufficient for newreaders who have not seen my tasting notes in the past. The real values are the inexpensive Muscat andMuscadelle. The Muscadelle (Tokay) exhibits a lightamber color as well as a gorgeous fragrance, and plentyof honey and molasses characteristics in a full-bodied,unctuous style. The Muscat is even better, offering arose/amber color followed by notes of black tea. Thissexy effort is the equivalent of liquid viagra. Full-bodiedand opulent, these two cuvées average 10 years in age.The two “Grand” cuvées average 70 years in age.The dark amber-colored Grand Muscadelle (Tokay) possessesscents of caramel, toffee, figs, molasses, and blacktea. The Grand Muscat reveals more orange marmaladenotes. It is an incredibly unctuous, sweet, thick wine, but, like its siblings, it is neither heavy nor cloying because ofgood underlying acidity. The non-vintage rare Muscat and Rare Muscadelleare off any earthly chart in terms of richness and intensity. The major component in these fortifieds date from1890. The Rare Muscadelle (Tokay) is a thick, unctuous, brown sugar-imbued fruit bomb revealing notes of balsamicvinegar intermixed with a smorgasbord of heavenlydelights including caramel, melted toffee, maplesyrup, and Asian spices. It must be tasted to be believed. The Rare Muscat may be even better, but the systemstops at 100 points. It is equally rich, profound, concentrated, and unctuous, with explosive aromatic fireworks.“Wine AdvocateRL BullerCalliope Rare Tokay__________________ half 74.99Fine Tawny_______________________ half 13.99SeppeltShow Reserve Sherry Oloroso D.P. 38_________ 18.99Show Reserve Tokay D.P. 57_ ______________ 18.99YalumbaN/V Galway Pipe Port 16 year_ _____________ 34.99N/V Museum Muscat_______________________half 17.99Rated 96/100, Wine Advocate“Yalumba is also a fabulous source of antique fortifiedsthat often sell for a song. The extraordinary non-vintageMuseum Release Antique Tawny exhibits a mediumamber color along with notes of prunes, sweet berries, raisins, spice, and jammy, overripe strawberries. Believedto be from a 20-year-old solera, it is delicious, but unlikelyto improve. Even more provocative and distinctive isthe non-vintage Museum Muscat. A killer value, it offersaromas of melted toffee, brandy-macerated raisins, prunes, maple syrup, molasses, and ripe figs. It is a stunningoffering to enjoy at the end of a meal, or as dessert.Equally spectacular is the non-vintage Museum 50 yearOld Antique Tawny. Readers who love the smell andtaste of maple syrup, melted caramel, toffee, and pruny, berry fruit will adore this fragrant, medium amber-colored,full-bodied, unctuous, fortified treasure. None ofthese Australian fortifieds improve in the bottle, but theyrarely change and can be kept for a long time. Onceopened, they should be consumed within 4-7 days.”Wine Advocateinfo@brownderby.com • www.brownderby.com PG. | 31
