Penner Ash
As a teenager Lynn spent her summers working for the Smithsonian Institute in
Washington, D.C. Her curiosity for the natural world lead her to UC Davis to
study Botany. It didn’t take long for her to realize that crushing grapes is a lot
more interesting (and fun!) than dissecting flower stamens. Upon graduating
with degrees in both Enology and Viticulture, Lynn gained invaluable experience
in some of Napa’s premier wineries, including Domaine Chandon, Chateau St.Jean and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars.
In 1988 Lynn and Ron headed north to the “Land of Endless Rainbows” and a young emerging wine industry.
Lynn spent the next 14 years producing world-class wines as winemaker/president of Rex Hill Vineyards Vineyards.
Just last year she turned over the reins at Rex Hill to join her husband, Ron, to focus full-time on Penner-Ash Wine
Cellars.
Lynn and Ron are currently producing their wines at the Carlton Winemakers Studio, a cooperative venture
located in the heart of the Northern Willamette Valley wine region. Along with partners Chris and Tyanne Dussin, Lynn
and Ron have purchased 80 acres of vineyard property located of Ribbon Ridge Road. The first phase of planting was
completed this past April. Dussin Vineyard will be planted to 100% Pinot Noir and will be the site of Penner-Ash Wine
CHÂTEAU LA ROQUE
JACK BOUTIN, PROPRIETOR,
HIS DAUGHTER AND WIFE
The 2000 vintage was recently a Wine Spectator Selection, scoring 93 points on
a 100-point scale. The other 93 pointers on the page were $50 and $37 per bottle.
(It pays to stick with us, folks.) They mentioned its “almost Hermitage-like
structure.” They did not say “Hermitage-like character,” but at this price we’ll
settle for anything Hermitage-like, don’t you agree
La Roque’s cuvée Spéciale, Cupa Numismae 2001, has a deep, pure
Syrah nose. It is, after all, two-thirds Syrah. The ripe Mourvèdre (the other
third) makes its presence felt on the palate: tasty, enveloping, with abundant,
texturally correct tannins.
Just Arrived!
THE BEST VINTAGE SINCE
THE REMARKABLE 1998!
DANIEL BRUNIER, PROPRIETOR
AND WINEMAKER
“The 2001 Vieux Telegraphe La Crau (a 17,000-20,000-case blend of 60%
Grenache, 1% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and other diverse varietals) should rival
the great 1998, which is just now emerging from a dumb, closed state, something all recent vintages
seem to pass through. It tips the scales at 14.8% alcohol, but that is hidden by the wine’s wealth of
fruit and concentration. A dense dark ruby-colored effort with a sweet, heady nose of licorice, seaweed,
iodine, black currants, and cherries, the soft, fleshy attack is followed by a full-bodied, concentrated,
and structured wine that will require some patience. It is a richer, more structured, powerful,
and larger-scaled example than the 2000. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.” Robert Parker, rated 91-
93/100
“It is a big wine, but ‘powerful’ is not the appropriate word. Voluptuous is more like it, because the
palate-saturating tannins are so ripe and velvety. Have you noticed that harsh tannins can cut the
length of a wine These tannins perpetuate the length, and believe you me, the flavors deserve to
linger. it is glorious stuff, deep, ripe, luscious, spicy, and very generous.” Kermit Lynch
More Outstanding
2000 BORDEAUX VALUES
2000 Ch. Laplagnotte-Bellevue ............................................................................22.99
“Showing far better out of bottle than it did from cask, the 2000 Laplagnotte-Bellevue exhibits a saturated dark ruby/purple color and a sexy, up-front
nose of sweet jammy cassis and currant with some espresso, vanilla, and white flowers. The wine is opulent, medium to full-bodied, yet at the same time,
elegant and pure. This is impressive and precocious. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.” Robert Parker
2000 Ch. Carsin....................................................................................................14.99
“This is another Bordeaux fruit bomb, somewhat in the style of the Thébot that I am so high on. Readers looking for sexy, up-front, fruit-driven Bordeaux
to drink early in life, will enjoy this luscious, modern-styled offering. Consumption within 2-3 years is essential.” Robert Parker, rated 88/100
2000 Plaisance Cuvee Alix ....................................................................................18.99
“The outstanding, dense, ruby/purple-colored 2000 Cuvée Alix offers notes of Crème de cassis intermixed with licorice, smoke, and vanilla, It is a serious,
classified growth-quality effort to enjoy over the next 5-10 years.” Robert Parker, rated 90/100
2000 Ch. La Closiere ............................................................................................26.99
(Second wine of Clos Fortet)
“Second wine of Clos Fourtet. Plum, spice and chocolate on the nose. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and silky tannins. Medium to long finish.
Serious wine. Best after 2006.” Wine Spectator, rated 90/100
1999 Silver Oak
ALEXANDER VALLEY
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
“The story of Silver Oak needs little introduction. These highly successful wines
are about as California/American as they can be. Aged in 100% new American oak (all from Missouri) for 30
months prior to bottling, they are gaudy, big, spicy oak and fruit bombs that are delicious young, yet seem capable
of lasting 12-15 years, and in certain vintages, much longer. Their legion of admirers seems to get larger and
larger and, on my tour of Napa and Sonoma, there is rarely a more packed and boisterous tasting room than Silver
Oak’s, regardless of the time. The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley touts an intense olive, smoky, toasty
nose intermixed with kirsch and currant fruit. The wine is sweet, dense, with an opaque ruby/purple color.
Expansive fat mid-palate, and long finish. This certainly should be as good
as most of the Alexander Valley Cabernets released this decade.” Robert
“Thévenet crafts wines of unbelievable depth, complexity, and concentration…Thévenet is making
highly acclaimed wines that are out of the ordinary…far and away Clessé’s top producer…”
Robert Parker
“The 2000’s remind me of 1990. They have that vintage’s depth, concentration, focus, and brightness.
It is a great vintage, with high maturity, some botrytis,a nd loads of fruit. The wines are ample,
rich, and perfumed and may, in the long run, be even better than the 90s.” Jean Thevenet, winemaker
2000 Domaine de la Bongran Macon Villages Cuvee Tradition....................................27.99
“Domaine de la Bongran’s Mâcon-Villages Cuvée Tradition has fulfilled all expectations. This outstanding, seductive offering explodes from
the glass with poached pears, honey, white pepper, spices, mint, and creamed minerals. A plush, broad, concentrated wine, it coats the taster’s
palate with layers of sweetened herbal teas, spices, pepper, and a myriad of white fruits. This well-focused beauty also reveals an exceptionally
long, flavor-packed finish.” Robert Parker, rated 92/100
2000 Domaine Emilian Gillet Macon Villages..............................................................22.99
“Apples, honey-laden minerals, and a hint of roasted coffee bean can be detected in the nose of Emilian Gillet’s 2000 Mâcon-Villages. Bursting
with spices, this light to medium-bodied wine is lush, satin-textured, and crammed with flavorful fruit. Apples, pears, loads of spices and sweet
minerals can be found in its deep character. Projected maturity: now-2008. Originally reviewed from tank in The Wine Advocate’s issue #138
(rated 90-92)” Robert Parker, rated 89/100
2000 Merlot
MARCO CAPPELLI,
WINEMAKER
“Swanson’s Merlot grapes are grown on two estate vineyards in the Oakville appellation, one situated along the
Napa River and the other (Schmidt Ranch) against the Mayacamas foothills on the west side of the valley. An
early bud break was encouraged by a spring of warm balmy days, which warmed the vineyard soils sooner than
anticipated. We then experienced some cooler weather in the beginning of summer, slowing bud break, which
had us all thinking “early harvest.” Two short periods of very hot weather, one in July and the other in August,
did result in a slightly early harvest. Rapid sugar development, a warmer-than-average season with an extended
“hang time”, all came together to produce a wine of excellent floral and fruit character.” Marco Cappelli, winemaker
“An elegant, supple style, with ripe, spicy currant and
plum-scented fruit, shaded by a light mocha flavor. Wellfocused,
intense and vibrant, with fine-grained tannins; a
touch of heat shows on the finish. Drink now through
2007.” Wine Spectator
Two New Releases
2001 Merlot Las Amigas ..................................................................................39.99
The cool Carneros vineyard source of this wine creates a unique style Merlot. While lighter in body than the Oakville
Merlot, it is a well-structured wine with sound acidity that balances the tannins. Floral notes, blackberry and vanilla are in
the nose followed by raspberry and red fruit flavors. Joe Bob said, “this is a wine ready to drink tonight,” and that’s just
what he did. You’ll love this wine, too. 100% Merlot. 450 cases produced.
2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa.......................................................................49.99
The 2000 vintage of this wine was their first venture into a multi-vineyard blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, and it exceeded
all of their expectations. The 2001 offering continues this new tradition. While they consider many of their 2001 wines to
be ageing wines, this offering is very approachable now with soft tannins and fully developed flavors. You will be able to
enjoy the nose of cherry and toasty vanilla with blueberry, lavender and cinnamon flavors. This wine is soft, clean and pure
with a lingering finish that make you want more. Don’t miss out on this great expression of the 2001 vintage.
Mega Wines
CLARENDON HILLS
he power of the press strikes again (for better or worse) creating massive national interest in the 2001 vintage of Clarendon Hills
Tbased on some shockingly high scores in the the Wine Advocate Online. These reviews are based on a barrel tasting in mid-June.
While we can’t give you the full story, (Big Bob is pretty serious about his copyrights) he does say “Clarendon Hills has probably had its
greatest vintage with this extremely hot year that produced miniscule yields of extraordinary ripe, concentrated fruit…This is undoubtedly
one of the world’s greatest wineries.…While I do not have the space to review them until they are in the bottle, barrel samples of the
Selection de Grains Nobles
Restricted to four noble grape varieties, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat, these rare wines are subject to France’s
most stringent wine laws. Vendages Tardives wines are picked last of all, and only from the choicest plots in the greatest years, the
grapes are always over-ripe and often affected by noble rot.
Selection de Grains Nobles wines are even richer and rarer than Vendage Tardive ones. They are only harvested under ideal climatic
conditions, the botrytised grapes literally being picked one by one. These rare nectars have an unrivaled aromatic intensity and can
improve for decade after decade.
WINES
1998 Falesco
Montiano
Rated 94/100, Robert Parker
“The terrific opaque purple-colored 1998
Montiano exhibits a spectacular bouquet of black
cherry liqueur, licorice, and toasty vanillin. The
wine explodes on the palate, offering copious quantities
of glycerin, cassis, black cherries, and blackberries.
As it sits in the glass, aromas and flavors of
melted chocolate and toasty oak emerge. The finish
lasts for 40+ seconds. This 1998 should drink well
for 10-15 years. Bravo!” Robert Parker, rated
1999 Falesco
Montiano
Rated 95/100, Robert Parker
“The profound, dense ruby/purple-colored 1999
Montiano (2,500 cases of 100% Merlot aged in
100% new French oak, and bottled unfined and
unfiltered) offers a smorgasbord of aromas, including
melted chocolate, espresso, blackberries, cherries,
currants, and smoke. Full-bodied, with terrific
purity, a multilayered texture, and surprising freshness
for a wine of such depth, it can be drunk
young, or cellared for 10-15 years. For technicians
who care about such things, it has a whopping 37
grams per liter of dry extract.” Robert Parker, rated
Vigna d’Alceo
Rated 98/100, Robert Parker
“A classic! For whatever reason, the full-bodied
2000 Vigna d’Alceo was roaring the day I tasted it.
A single vineyard blend of 85% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese, it tastes like the
Sammarco on steroids. It boasts a deep purple
color in addition to scents of espresso, sweet melted
licorice, black currant jam, and toasty oak.
There is great intensity, superb purity, and a finish
that lingers for nearly a minute. This mythical
wine requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and will age
effortlessly for two decades.” Rated 98/100, Robert
A Classic Rating of 95 Points
“…two wines from the vintage (2000) that
deserved classic ratings of 95 points: the pure
Merlot from Petrolo, Galatrona ($90), and a new
Cabernet Sauvignon blend, (75% Cabernet, 25%
Sangiovese) the Toscana Pietradonice ($90), from
Casanova di Neri, which is better known for its
Brunello. ‘We were lucky,’ says Giacomo Neri of
Casanova di Neri. ‘Our new wine came from a
region in Brunello di Montalcino that is less susceptible
to drought, so the grapes were not dehydrated.
We made a balanced wine.’ Neri’s 2000
Cabernet blend and other producers’ wines that
scored in the 90s are certainly worth searching for.”
Barone Ricasoli
Casalferro
Casalferro is produced from the selection of the
best Sangiovese grapes and other red grapes
such as Merlot, grown on the estate. After the
initial fermentation and maceration with the
skins, Casalferro is matured in barriques for a
period ranging from sixteen to eighteen months;
this is followed by a lengthy refinement in the
bottle.
The 1999 is truly remarkable, following
brilliantly in the footsteps of the 1997 and
1998. The 1998 was rated 92/100 by the Wine
HIGHLY RATED
1998 La Carraia
Fobiano
“The outstanding 1998 Fobiano is a blend of
70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon,
aged in new French oak casks, and bottled with
neither fining nor filtration. A dense opaque
purple color is accompanied by notes of new
saddle leather, blackberry liqueur, smoke and
licorice. An opulently-textured wine with medium
to full body, a chewy, lush mid-palate, and
outstanding purity and ripeness, it can be
drunk now as well as over the next decade.”
Robert Parker, rated 90/100
“Rich and jammy, with chocolate, plum and
smoky aromas. Full-bodied, with soft tannins
and a chocolaty, berry aftertaste. Somewhat
flabby, but delicious. Best after 2001. 2,330
cases made.” Wine Spectator
2000 Gaja
Ca’Marcanda
Magari
“The brilliant 2000 Magari (6,000 cases) is a blend
of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 25%
Cabernet Sauvignon. Its opaque purple color is followed
by a gorgeous perfume of espresso, new saddle
leather, blackberries, crème de cassis, smoke,
and licorice. The wine is full-bodied and opulentlytextured,
with fabulous fruit concentration, great
purity, and a savory, long mouthfeel. The tannin,
acidity, and wood are brilliantly integrated in this
exceptional effort. Anticipated maturity: now-2013.
Kudos to Angelo Gaja, who has taken up the challenge
of producing great wines far from his home
base in Barbaresco. These debut releases are
immensely promising” Robert Parker, rated 93/100
1997 Castello Dei
Rampolla Sammarco
“For more than two decades one of the greatest
Tuscan proprietary red wines has been Castello
dei Rampolla’s Cabernet Sauvignon/Sangiovese
blend called Sammarco. What has always made
this wine exceptional, especially in the top vintages,
is its complexity and elegance. It is closer
to a great Graves than any other wine I have
ever tasted outside of France.” Robert Parker
“Black color. Aromas of blackberries, minerals
and mint. Very subtle. Full-bodied, with amazing
concentration of silky tannins and a finish
that goes on and on. Monumental Sammarco.
“Very full ruby-garnet, dark and deep. Ample in
aroma, with sweet cassis fruit, light accents of sage
and rosemary, chocolate and roasted coffee from the
oak, and some alcoholic warmth. Dense, round and
velvety on the palate, with expanding flavors.
Finishes with important tannic strength and
impressive weight and force. The fusion of the
Sangiovese and Cabernet components of this wine
is more accomplished than in past vintages.” Steve
Tanzer, rated 93/100
“The 1997 Tignanello is a blend of 80%
Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5%
Cabernet Franc, aged in small French oak casks for
12 months, and bottled with no filtration. It possesses
a dense, ruby/purple color, and an expansive
nose of black currants, cherry compote, vanillin,
and earth. Sweet, jammy, and opulently-textured,
this expansive, concentrated, low acid wine is flashy
and gorgeously-proportioned. it should drink well
for 10-15 years, although who can ignore it now”
Domenico Clerico
1999 G. Rivetti
La Spinetta
Pin
Rated 95/100, Robert Parker
“This exceptional producer has been receiving
well-deserved raves from the international press…
The 1999 releases continue to push quality to
extraordinary heights. Rivetti’s blend of Cabernet
Sauvignon and Nebbiolo, the 1999 Pin
Monferrarto Rosso, is an exotic, ripe, luxuriously
intense effort displaying extravagant flavors that
border on excess. It is voluptuously textured with
intense aromas of red and black fruits, smoke, and
new oak. While there is a tendency to think of this
as an internationally-styled offering, Nebbiolo gives
the wine a finesse and complexity not found in
most new breed wines. Its texture, richness, and
thickness are a total turn-on. Who knows how it
will age, but certainly it is impossible to resist at
present, My instincts suggest drinking it over the
next 7-8 years, but it may be uncommonly longlived.”
Vintage 2002 Germany
POSITIVE INDICATIONS OF ANOTHER GREAT VINTAGE
ARRIVING THIS FALL!
Official statistics just released by the German Wine Grower’s Association indicate nearly 10.2 million hectoliters was harvested
in 2002, just slightly higher than the average of the past ten years. The 2002 crop also nudged higher than 2001 in
average ripeness (Oechsle levels) and acidity levels, and produced a greater percentage of Germany’s highest quality category,
Qualitätswein mit Prädikat.
First tastings of the 2002 are already very impressive. Those who have have already enjoyed the 2001
vintage wines, will find that the benchmark has been maintained for the 2002, and although fixed costs continue
to increase for the estates, with better yields in 2002, prices for estate wines will generally remain stable.
CHARDONNAY
SLEEPY HOLLOW VYD
In appearance, this wine exhibits a medium golden straw color
reminiscent of the 1997 vintage. The nose presents notes of
tropical fruit, hazelnut, white truffle, and minerality, frame by a
hint of French oak. On the palate, concentrated rich flavors of
peach, honeydew melon, Pippin apple, and guava marry with mineral
elements and well-integrated French oak accents. A typically
high level of acid produces a long, clean finish and promises to
make the wine cellarable. Still tightly wound, this Chardonnay will
open nicely over the next several months.
2000 Cloud View Vineyards
PROPRIETARY ESTATE
Cloud View produces a single proprietary premium red wine blended from Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot— “The best we can grow and make on this special hillside.” They
use only their own grapes. Their first vintage (1999) was limited to 400 12-bottle cases. Vintage
2000 production is 560 cases. They plan to grow to 1500 cases by the 2004 Vintage.
Cloud View is grown and produced at Pritchard Hill in Napa valley California.Wineries
and vineyards on and near Pritchard Hill include Bryant Family, Chappellet, Colgin,
David Arthur, Harrison, Long, and Versant.
Blended from estate grown fruit, 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, Cloud View
2000 is enjoyable now and well worth cellaring.
“If 2000 is not the vintage one might choose for a debut, Cloud View has pulled it off spectacularly
with this lovely rendition. Its black cherry and curranty fruit is fit perfectly to rich oak in both
nose and mouth, and the wine’s supple entry and its smooth passage across the palate add to its
current come-hither charms. A youthfully tannic edge in the finish provides plenty of grip for
present-day service with steaks and chops, and a bit of cellaring will bring increasing polish.”
2000 Domaine
du Pegau
Chateauneuf du Pape
Cuvee Reservee
Rated 95/100, Robert Parker
This is one of the benchmarks for traditionally-made Châteauneuf du Pape. Paul Féraud, a classmate of Henri Bonneau, is still involved in the running of this
estate, but he has given more and more responsibility to his charming, talented daughter, Laurence.
Readers looking for uncompromising Châteauneuf du Pape that can age for two decades need look no further than Pégau. Their primary vineyard plots are
well-placed lieux-dits called Monpertuis, Rayas, and La Crau, the latter being the parcel from which the bulk of Pégau’s wine emerges. All of the Cuvée Réservée
and Cuvée da Capo is aged in large foudres and bottled with neither fining nor filtration. The Cuvée Laurence is aged both in foudre and smaller used barrels, and
is bottled after a four year élevage. While I love the Cuvée Laurence, I generally prefer the Cuvée Réservée because of its fresh fruit…
The 2000 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée may be one of the few 2000s that is better than its 1998 counterpart. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied
by sweet aromas of crème de cassis, kirsch liqueur, cedar, licorice, and pepper. It smells like an open-air Provençal market. Sweet, fat, opulent, and voluptuous,
with fabulous fruit concentration, sweet, fat, opulent, and voluptuous, with fabulous fruit concentration, sweet tannin, and a long, 45+ second finish, this powerful,
deep, seamless 2000 is impeccably well-balanced. A tour de force in traditional Châteauneuf du Pape, it is accessible now, but should age easily for 1-20 years.”
Chateauneuf du Pape
Cuvee de Capo
Rated 96-98+/100
“The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Capo, a spectacular effort, achieved nearly 16% natural alcohol from extremely old vines of
Grenache and other assorted varietals. It will be bottled in April, 2003, and released several months later. It is a monument to the old vine
richness that exists in Chateauneuf du Pape. The color is a dense ruby/purple, and the aromatics include a boatload of kirsch liqueur intermixed
with leather, herb, cedar, and spice box scents. It has a level of unctuosity, thickness, and purity that must be tasted to be believed. Over 90% of
the blend is Grenache, all from the famed terroir called La Crau. The 2000 is a humongous, blockbuster
effort that may be too exaggerated and powerful for many tasters, but it represents the essence
of old vine Grenache made in the traditional manner. Despite its alcohol, it is neither heavy nor
hot…this is spectacular wine. Be-bop-a-lula!” Robert Parker
BODEGA LA RURAL’S TRUMPETER WINES
DI PAOLO, HEAD
WINEMAKER
Four generations of the Rutini family have maintained the legacy begun in 1855 by Don Felipe Rutini. In 1925, the Rutinis were the first
to plant vineyards in the high-altitude region of Tupungato at almost 4,000 feet elevation. These vineyards, with bright, sunny days and cool nights—essential for the
production of intense wines of concentrated aromas and flavors—are the the source of grapes for these Trumpeter wines. In 1995, Nicolas Catena became part owner
of the Bodega La Rural and now it boasts the latest in winemaking technology: stainless steel tanks, new French barriques, and pneumatic presses. Gentle handling at the
winery and moderate aging preserve the fruit flavors and distinctive character of each Trumpeter varietal.
2002 Chardonnay
Nicely ripened apple and pear-like fruit is comfortably joined by creamy, toasty oak in the aromas and flavors of this wholly likeable offering. Medium-bodied with a nice
richness of fruit as well as depth, this is tasty on its own or paired with creamy fowl or seafood dishes.
2002 Cabernet Sauvignon
The Trumpeter Cabernet Sauvignon harvest 2002 has an intense red ruby color with some dark violet tones. In nose it displays concentrated aromas to red fruit, intermingled
with notes of tobacco, chocolate and spices. In mouth, it is full, but soft, presenting flavors of ripe plums and black cherries, with accents of vanilla. It finishes with
soft and sweet tannins.
2002 Malbec/Syrah
The Trumpeter Malbec/Syrah 2002 harvest, has a deep violet color with intense and vibrant red tones. The nose is full in spices of ripe red currants that intermingle with
the aroma of tobacco and vanilla. Of great body and very structured in mouth, this wine has concentrated flavors of wild berries, with
soft and velvet tannins.
2002 Merlot
Aromas of ripe black cherry fruit as well as coffee give in to flavors of the same in this medium-weight, slightly spicy, excellent food
wine. The tannins are velvety, well-integrated with the rich fruit from start to finish. The cassis, black cherry, raspberry and oak flavors
are enticing—all in all a terrific bargain.
“2002 had the hightest sugar levels we have ever seen in Oregon. Several sites came in at 26 to 27 degrees brix. We were
concerned that there would be difficulty in finishing fermentations due to the toxic effect of high alcohol on yeast but
all of the lots managed to finish dry. The wines are universally dark, big, rich and forward.” Ken Wright
“Delicious elegant, rich, vibrant and complex, with deep, sharply focused, ripe
1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 6.............................3.0 liter 549.99
“Ripe, rich, smooth and complex, with deeply concentrated currant, black cherry,
herb, spice and vanilla, and a wonderful aftertaste that keeps pumping out the flavors.
The tannins, while firm, are physiologically ripe and supple for a wine this
young. Tempting now, better in 2000. The first bottling of the Clone 6, which was
previously a component of the Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. 250 cases
made.” Wine Spectator, rated 93/100
“This limited bottling from BV’s new Signet Collection series of wines (all expensive
and made in small quantities) is an immensely impressive offering. The color
is a saturated dark ruby/purple. The wine, from an old clone of Cabernet
Sauvignon, is a rich, full-bodied, powerful yet harmonious Cabernet with gobs of
black currant fruit, a nice touch of oak, and outstanding ripeness and purity. It is
also long in the mouth, with a youthful, unevolved personality. This should prove
to be an impressive, long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: 2001-
2015.” Robert Parker, rated 91/100
The wine boasts a dark ruby/purple color, an attractive nose of sweet, toasty new
2001
Andrew Rich
GEWURZTRAMINER
ICE WINE
Oregon 82% and Washington State 18%
Made in the manner of German eiswein—except that the grapes are frozen after harvest. The rockhard
little gewurz marbles are pressed for a full day or more as the thick, sweet juice drips slowly
into the pan. Yields are about half that of fresh grapes, but with nearly twice the normal sugar level.
The juice will then ferment for more than two months—until the acid/sugar/alcohol balance is
judged to be ideal—before bottling.
The 2001 vintage is at once powerful and harmonious, showing the classic gewurz markers of
litchi and roses, along with honey, tropical fruit, and spice notes. While very intense, it seems to be
perfectly balanced, with a long, clean, elegant finish. It is probably best served by itself—as a
dessert—or with a mild, creamy cheese. Then again, there is always foie gras…92 points, Wine
“Many of you always ask me to ‘compare’ our vintages. The 1998 shows similar characteristics to the 1993 and
Japan’s
Finest Premium Saké
Saké, often called the “Drink of the Gods” by the Japanese, is a beverage created
from rice, water, kiji, and yeast, usually with an alcohol content of 15%-16%, just
slightly higher than that of an average wine. Saké is brewed like a beer, but it is
served and enjoyed like a fine wine. Premium saké is usually served lightly chilled,
while lower grades of saké are often served warm. The saké we are talking about
here is more specifically referred to as Junmai-shu or chilled, ultra-premium, pure
rice saké—not the boiled, cheap stuff that has (unfortunately) been served to
Americans in small, ceramic carafes for decades.
When we tasted these saké for the first time, we were floored. These were
glasses full of complex, aromatic, thought-provoking, pleasure-inducing liquids.
They are created from premium saké rice, water & koji, without using distilled
alcohol or other additives, and using a painstaking and laborious production
Ginga Shizuku - Divine Droplets..................................59.99
A prominent fragrance, a clean and fresh taste, with flavor deep into the recesses.
Truly one of the “Rolls-Royces” of saké.
Sato no Homare - Pride of the Village...........................44.99
An elegant, super-premium saké. A pleasingly light and fruity nose, laced with violets,
strawberries, pear and grape, a refined and clear flavor, yet settled and deep.
Semi-dry with a superbly clean finish.
Takatenjin - Shrine of the Village..................................49.99
A clean and dry saké with a bit of richness in the recesses and a crisp finish.
Tentaka Kuni - Hawk in the Heavens............................27.99
A mature well-rounded flavor with a settled fragrance. Dry but with an underlying
richness. Drier and lighter when chilled, and a bit fuller as it warms.
Mantensai - Star-filled Sky ............................................29.99
Soft, honey-laced nose with just a tad of fruitiness. Dry overall, but with a sweet
element creeping out of the background. Good richness and overall balance in a
slightly dry profile.
Hand-crafted by Small, Ancient,
Family-run Japanese Brewers
process. These products will change the way people think about saké.
We have incredible respect and admiration for the results of these brewers’
efforts. While every one of these brewers has been making saké for over 80 years
(and one for 850 years), the category of pure, premium, chilled saké has only been
produced in Japan for the last 30 years. In terms of grade or quality, this category
represents approximately the top 12% of all saké produced in Japan.
They are rare, and they are more expensive than saké produced in the U.S.
or Japanese saké produced by the mega-breweries. This is a first time that they
have been available in the U.S.
Rihaku - Wandering Poet ..............................................29.99
Brewed carefully and slowly at low temperatures using traditional brewing techniques
and Yamada Nishiki rice polished to 55%. Characterized by a well-rounded
flavor with a solidness to the flavor and fragrance, and a clean finish.
Ginginga - Southern Beauty ..........................................34.99
This has an elegant and soft fragrance and a flavor that is reminiscent of pears and
muscat grapes.
Fukucho - Moon on the Water ......................................34.99
A rather fragrant junmai ginjo, bottled immediately without charcoal filtering. The
fine-lined flavor is as bold as the fragrance, with a soft-edged fullness overall.
Shinriki - Sacred Power .................................................39.99
Enjoy the rich, mellow flavor & deep recesses of this saké.
TRE BICCHIERI
“THREE GLASSES”
Castello di Brolio, established in 1141, is the oldest winery in Italy still
owned and run by the original family. Barone Bettino Ricasoli invented the
original formula for Chianti by figuring out how to use the best grapes to
make the best wine for the region. The Italian government used his formula as
the base of the D.O.C.G. rules for the wine we know as Chianti.
The grand cru of the Brolio estate, the flagship wine by which all other
Chianti Classicos will be judged. Made from Sangiovese with a small addition
of Cabernet Sauvignon for structure, this wine shows an immensely concentrated
aroma of dried fruit with secondary notes of vanilla and tobacco. Potent,
fresh, and well balanced, the wine finishes long and lush with lingering fruit and
smooth tannins. A long maceration (19 days) and long aging (18 in barriques,
65% new and 8 months bottle age) period brings all the intense flavors together
harmoniously.
italianwines
The most important guide in evaluating Italian wines is the Tre Bicchieri
(three glass) rating system devised by Gambero Rosso, the foremost Italian
food and wine publication. Competition for the three glass award is fierce.
Over 12,600 wines were evaluated, including wines from each of the 21
regions.
The wines are tasted blind, by panels made up of at least five members. In lieu of
point scores, the ratings are expressed by a four tier system…
Dino, purchased 55 acres. Today it consists of over 500 acres, of which almost
300 are cultivated with D.O.C. and D.O.C. G. vineyards.
This wine is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, & 10% Canaiolo
Nero and Mammolo. The wine has a deep ruby red color with scents of
graphite, chocolate, coffee, and blackberries. Full-bodied & elegant, it flaunts a
finish of great depth. Vinification: After soft pressing, the grapes are macerated
on the skins for more than two weeks. The wine is then aged in French oak
Januik
(WASHINGTON STATE)
In 1990, Mike was hired to be the Head Winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle
Winery. Over the course of the next nine years, he played a critical role in its
development into a world class winery. During his tenure, Chateau Ste.
Michelle was consistently recognized for the high quality of their wines. Literally
dozens of Januik-made wines have received 90-plus scores in Wine Spectator.
(During 1997 and 1998 alone, the Wine Spectator gave eighteen of his wines a score
of 90 or above.) In 1999, Wine Enthusiast magazine named Mike one of the world’s
ten Masters of Merlot. And twice in the last three years under his guidance, Chateau
Ste. Michelle was named Winery of the Year by Wine and Spirits Magazine.
“Understand the man and you will understand the wines. Behind the exuberance, behind the dominating personality,
behind the Latin passion, behind the skilled manipulation of the domestic and export market and the
media there is a poet and a philosopher, a man of sensitivity and taste, a thinker and a perfectionist.
And behind the wines, underneath the still atypical cleanliness and vibrant expression of Nebbiolo fruit,
in addition to the oakiness and the concentration, is the element that sets Gaja wines above the rest: breed. You
can see it in the Chardonnay; you can see it in the Barbera. Above all you can see it in the single-vineyard
Barbarescos. This is triumphant, aristrocratic Nebbiolo. Wine of great individuality - and wine which for all its
‘modernity’ has not lost its soul.” Clive Coates
Mike attributes much of this success and his development
as a winemaker to the experience he’s had with
other winemakers. In addition to the work he has done
with winemakers in Bordeaux, Mike has had the unique
opportunity to work with Piero Antinori, Italy’s best
known and most innovative wine producer. Together
with Antinori winemaker Renzo Cotarrella, they have
produced Col Solare. This has been a long-term collaborative
effort intended to produce the best Washington
State red wine possible.
Through all of his experiences over the last sixteen
years, Mike considers himself extremely fortunate.
During this time, he has had a diverse enough range of winemaking experiences to
fill a lifetime. And he still feels as though his journey is one that has just begun.
“2001 California Cabernets Make a
Showy Debut…”- Wine Spectator
“Vintage is strong across the board with rich, opulent wines; prices will be the wild card.
Thanks to a favorable growing season, capped by ideal harvest conditions, California appears to have another tremendous Cabernet vintage in barrel
with 2001.
‘The Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot all show signs of potential greatness.’ said Bob Levy, winemaker at Harlan Estate in
Napa Valley. ‘The wines have the power and concentration of ‘94 and ‘97, without the superripe character that ‘97 brought us.’
‘Best since 1997,’ added Mia Klein, winemaker for Dalle Valle, another Napa cult winery. The 2001 reds show ‘great concentration, extract and sap.’
The delicious young wines I tried this week in two separate barrel tastings offered every indication that this new vintage will yield dozens of outstanding
wines and compare favorably in overall quality with two recent stars, 1999 and 1997.” Wine Spectator, James Laube
2001 Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley.......................................................................................................62.99
“A plush, rich, complex wine, with layers of currant, earth, pencil lead, light toasty oak and minerally flavors. Packs in lots of flavor and follows through with a concentrated
aftertaste.” Wine Spectator, rated 92-94/100
2001 Ramey Wine Cellars Diamond Mountain District Napa Valley ......................................................................................54.99
“Opaque medium ruby. Sappy aromas of black raspberry, mocha and exotic spices. Much denser and sweeter than the Claret, with superb mouth feel. Flavors of black
raspberry, currant and chocolate offer a penetrating sweetness. A huge wine with a boatload of tannins and a finishing flavor of bitter chocolate. ‘The young-vines tannins
are not yet noble,’ admits Ramey.” Steve Tanzer, rated 91-93/100
“A wine with sensational potential…” Robert Parker, rated 91-94/100
2001 Ramey Wine Cellars Jericho Canyon Vineyard Napa Valley............................................................................................84.99
“Saturated ruby to the rim. Perfumed nose is at once cool and superripe, melding cassis, black licorice, bitter chocolate, mocha and espresso. Lush but penetrating in the
mouth, with hugely concentrated, urgent, liqueur-like fruit that currently makes the 15+% alcohol disappear. Here the huge tannins are noticeably smooth and fine, and
the fruit shows terrific staying power on the aftertaste.” Steve Tanzer, rated 93-95/100
2001 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon...........................................................................................................................mag. 169.99
“The wines mirror the owner…what you see is what you get…authenticity, no B.S., and plenty of character. In what is an abundant vintage for Togni, the 2001 Cabernet
Sauvignon looks to be a superlative effort. It boasts a saturated black/purple color as well as a strikingly pure nose of crème de cassis, tapenade, licorice, white flowers, and
subtle roasted wood notions. Dense, velvety-textured, and opulent, with sensational concentration, and the vintage’s outstanding seamlessness, this classic Cabernet is best
purchased only by those with patience and cold cellars.” Robert Parker, rated 94-96/100
“Saturated full ruby. Superripe aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate and nutty oak; shows the confectionery and roasted hints of the vintage’s riper examples. Rich,
dense and stuffed with currant, blackberry and chocolate flavors; supple for this wine but with excellent backbone and solid acidity. Finishes with big but lush tannins and
plenty of grip.” Steve Tanzer, rated 91-93/100
“This vintage of our Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is immediately captivating in its aromatics. All the regular ‘players’ are here including
an abundance of citrus (lemon, orange, grapefruit), tart green apple, and our distinct floral signature. Supporting cast members include
fresh brioche, subtle wet-stone minerality, and an intriguing caramelizd crème brulee character. The palate is creamy and balanced from
2001 SONOMA COAST PINOT NOIR
“The aromas of this wine are, again, distinctly forward and multilayered. The clean brightness of fruit is what sets this vintage apart.
A predominance of “red fruits” is accented by a touch of curry-like spice and a “kiss” of well-seasoned French oak. The texture is plush
and round with the underlying structure and acidity not becoming apparent until the late palate and finish. This Pinot was a joy to
blend with it never ceasing to amaze us how the sum can be so much greater than the parts. And there were several parts! Five key vineyards
and five minor ones were the sources for the blend this year; with two of the key vineyards being Camp Meeting Ridge and our
new ranch off Fort Ross Road. The purity of this wien is what is so striking and reflects the preciseness and delineation of fruit taht
was a common denominator in many of the Pinot lots this vintage. Drinking surprisingly well for such a young wine, I believe this
vintage will continue to evolve and improve over the next 3 years.” Walt Flowers
Outstanding Wines
From Australia
d’Arenberg
One of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and Rhone varietals, it appears that Chester Osborn of d’Arenberg can do no wrong. With vineyards over 80 years old and
utilizing minimal handling techniques that include the use of the 19th century basket presses (for both white and red wines) foot treading and small batch submerged cap
open fermenters for reds, the range displays incredible depth, from the flagship icon’s right through to the entry level “The Stump Jump’s.” Robert Parker commented in 2002
that… “this is one of South Australia’s most renowned wineries and an institution in McLaren Vale.”
“Chester Osborn, the remarkable person behind this enormous array of both impeccably high quality and value-priced wines, deserves considerable accolades for what he is
able to achieve at all price ranges. If you love Australian wines, d’Arenberg is a winery to seek out as these offerings all possess abundant soul as well as character.” Robert
Parker
2002 Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier.........................................................................................................................................29.99
“The 2002 The Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier (93% of the former and 7% of the latter) is the La Mouline of McLaren Vale. An exotic, heady, flamboyantly-styled red, it
boasts an inky/purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of lychee nuts, acacia flowers, blackberries, and crème de cassis.” Robert Parker, rated 93/100
“Readers should be on the look out for the 2001 The Dead Arm Shiraz, one of the greatest examples of this cuvée. Its dense black/purple color is accompanied by celestial aromas
of melted licorice, graphite, blackberries, cassis, incense, anise, and toasty oak. Fabulously concentrated, with great purity, an unctuous, viscous texture, and an amazingly
long, 60-second plus finish, this fabulous baby will need 5-6 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following 20-25 years.” Rated 98+/100, Robert Parker
Leeuwin Estate
In 1972, following an extensive search for the area most suitable to produce the best varietal wines in Australia, Robert Mondavi identified the future
site of the Leeuwin Estate vineyard, which evolved under the direction of founders Denis and Tricia Horgan (with Mondavi acting as consultant and
mentor). The initial vineyards were planned, deep plowed, deep ripped, emptied of stone and eventually planted over a five year period from 1975.
The winery building was opened in 1978 and the estate was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine (UK) gave its highest recommendation
to the 1981 ‘Art Series’ Chardonnay in an international blind tasting. It has since become a benchmark estate on the world stage, with
Wine Spectator awarding two of the past four Art Series Chardonnays 97 points.
“These are the highest ratings I have yet bestowed on a group of wines from Leeuwin Estate, one of the benchmarks, if not the reference point winery
in Margaret River.” Robert Parker
Yarra Yering
James Halliday, Australia’s foremost wine critic has described the Yarra Yering wines as “appealing to the heart rather than the mind.” And he says this with
the utmost respect - for legendary winemaker Bailey Carrodus is one of the most intelligent and passionate winemakers in Australia today. Shunning publicity,
Carrodus has been crafting profound wines from his 78 acre Yarra Valley property since the late sixties and now enjoys a cult following for his wines
the world over. These are stunning wines, bursting with pure varietal expression and rich complexities. considered ‘must haves’ by serious Australian collectors
“These singular treasures from Australia should not be missed!” Robert Parker
The Chambers winery has been family owned since its establishment in 1858. The winemaking duties and care of the “old material” have been handed
down from father to son through five generations and for the last 40 years have rested with Bill Chambers, one of Australia’s most respected wine personalities.
Acclaimed by critics the world over, it is perhaps Robert Parker who summed it up best in 2001: “Anyone who has ever tasted Chambers fortified
Tokay or Muscat realizes the world’s reference point for these wines begins and ends with Chambers. In summary, life is too short not to try one
of the Muscats or Tokays from William Chambers…a true Australian treasure.”
“William Chambers’s offerings, which are among the greatest fortified whites in the world, basically elicit the same comments as well as nearly identical scores every year. I was
simply going to write…blah, blah, blah, blah…but I thought that might not be sufficient for new readers who have not seen my tasting notes in the past. The real values are
the inexpensive Muscat and Muscadelle. The Muscadelle (Tokay) exhibits a light amber color as well as a gorgeous fragrance, and plenty of honey and molasses characteristics
in a full-bodied, unctuous style. The Muscat is even better, offering a rose/amber color followed by notes of black tea. This sexy effort is the equivalent of liquid viagra. Fullbodied
and opulent, these two cuvées average 10 years in age.
The two “Grand” cuvées average 70 years in age. The dark amber-colored Grand Muscadelle (Tokay) possesses scents of caramel, toffee, figs, molasses, and black tea. The
Grand Muscat reveals more orange marmalade notes. It is an incredibly unctuous, sweet, thick wine, but, like its siblings, it is neither heavy nor cloying because of good underlying
acidity.
The non-vintage rare Muscat and Rare Muscadelle are off any earthly chart in terms of richness and intensity. The major component in these fortifieds date from 1890. The
Rare Muscadelle (Tokay) is a thick, unctuous, brown sugar-imbued fruit bomb revealing notes of balsamic vinegar intermixed with a smorgasbord of heavenly delights including
caramel, melted toffee, maple syrup, and Asian spices. It must be tasted to be believed. The Rare Muscat may be even better, but the system stops at 100 points. It is equally
rich, profound, concentrated, and unctuous, with explosive aromatic fireworks.
“Rhone wine enthusiasts need to jump on Domaine de la Charbonniére’s band wagon before the estate
becomes better known. Proprietor Michel Maret is doing everything right, producing wines with terrific
individual character from low yields and bottling without filtration. It is one of the most serious
Châteauneuf du pape estates… The 1999s are the most forward efforts produced by Maret over the last
three vintages…Michel Maret’s 2000s reveal sweeter glycerin levels as well as additional ripeness, fat, and
fruit, although there is plenty of underlying structure and tannin. It is another top vintage for Maret, who
the Merlot and Merlot/Syrah blend, and 500 cases of the Cabernet Franc/Merlot proprietary red blend. Readers should not expect the Arietta Merlots to taste like anything
2000 Merlot/Syrah................................................74.99
“The 2000 Merlot/Syrah (70% of the former and 30% of the latter) spent an
amazing six weeks macerating on its skins. The opaque bluish/purple color is
accompanied by gorgeous aromas of plum liqueur intermixed with figs, chocolate,
smoked meat, and cassis. Powerful and dense, this infant wine reveals huge stuffing
as well as exceptional structure and length. It’s an immensely impressive beast!”
1999 Merlot ..........................................................79.99
“The 1999 Merlot (which includes 10% Syrah) exhibits a Pomerol-like character.
It represents a synthesis in style between the elegance and complexity of a French
wine, and the power and ripe fruit of a top-flight California offering. An opaque
purple color is followed by aromas of cola, chocolate, and macerated jammy black
cherries. This super-concentrated, high strung, packed effort appears to be as tight
as a coiled spring. There is great fruit on the attack as well as an imposing structure,
but it feels like that is all being held in check at present. Despite the big,
intense flavors, the wine is elegant and light on its feet.” Robert Parker, rated
2002 Chardonnay ‘Carneros District’
2002 Chardonnay ‘el Novillero’
“In recent months, all of us at Neyers Vineyards have been gratified at the wine media’s response to our several bottlings of
Chardonnay. This began last December with a ‘hat trick’ in Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar. Our three newly
released bottlings of 2001 Chardonnay were scored 90 Points, 92 Points and 91 Points, In January we were included (twice!)
in the Wine & Spirits Magazine annual list of ‘The 100 Best Wines of the Year.’ Of the 100 top wines listed only four were
California Chardonnay, and two of these four wines were from Neyers Vineyards. Our 2000 El Novillero Chardonnay and
our 2000 Napa Valley Chardonnay were both given a score of 94 Points.
A few days later, The Wine Spectator listed our 2001 Carneros District Chardonnay in the January 15, 2003 issue, scoring it 91
Points. After another week went by, we learned that California Grapevine had included our 2001 Napa Chardonnay in its
February-March, 2003 issue as the First Place finisher in one of that issue’s tastings, rating the wine ‘Very Highly
Recommended’ with a score of 91d The Wine Spectator reviewed our 2001 Thieriot Vineyard Chardonnay, scoring it 94 Points, and observing ‘…Deeply concentrated,
(the wine) is remarkably complex.’ While Sophocles did indeed write ‘For God hates utterly the bray of bragging tongues,’ I think it was Dizzy Dean who said, ‘It ain’t
bragging if you done it.’
Not surprisingly, those 2000 and 2001 wines are sold out. But Ehren has a new set of offerings for us, and, after tasting them, we’re convinced that we’ve got new
wines in the bottle every bit as good. You be the judge. Here’s what’s available now” Bruce Neyers
2000 Vintage Port
an excellent year…
“With respect to a buying strategy, no one will regret
purchasing the top 2000 vintage ports, even at the prices
they fetch.” Robert Parker
“The new millennium brings a classic vintage.”
Wine Spectator
2000 Cockburns .................................................................64.99
“Potentially one of the most compelling wines of the vintage, this inky
black/purple-colored 2000 exhibits notes of scorched earth, melted asphalt,
blackberry liqueur, and a pungent, penetrating intensity that reverberates in the
mouth as well as the head. Full-bodied, massive, and concentrated, with a 45-
second finish, this thrilling effort should drink well between 2010-2035.” Robert
2000 Croft.........................................................................69.99
“A striking, individualistic nose of spring flowers, blackberries, blueberries, and
lead pencil shavings emerges from this saturated purple-colored 2000. Evolved
yet expansive, sweet, and generous, it admirably conceals moderately high tannins
under a wealth of fruit and glycerin. The aromatic profile and attack merit
a score in the mid-nineties, but the finish is short, thus lowering the overall rating.
My instincts suggest there is more to this port than it revealed the days I tasted
it. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025” Robert Parker, rated 90+/100
2000 Delaforce ..................................................................62.99
“Made in a sweeter, more open-knit, precocious style, Delaforce’s 2000 reveals a
dense ruby/purple color a swell as sweet, accessible black cherry/blackberry fruit
with hints of smoke, earth, and truffles. This lush, medium to full-bodied, juicy,
succulent effort will last for 15+ years.” Robert Parker, rated 90/100
2000 Fonseca......................................................................89.99
“Dense ruby/purple-colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits,
flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of
the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this largescaled,
but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible
(by Fonseca’s standards). Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025.” Robert Parker, rated
2000 Quinta do Noval........................................................89.99
“The saturated blue/purple/black-colored 2000 Vintage Port reveals a distinctive
bouquet of graphite, creme de cassis liqueur, licorice, and spice. Sweet tannin,
full body, and outstanding concentration provide an impressive entry on the
palate. Notions of chocolate make an appearance in the long finish of this sweet,
lush, precocious effort. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.” Robert Parker, rated
92/100
“This young Vintage Port shows wonderful focus, with laserguided aromas of
violets, berries and anise. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish.
2000 Silval..........................................................................34.99
“A dense ruby/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of ripe black fruits. Not
a blockbuster, Silval’s 2000 is a full-bodied, elegant, soft, fleshy, accessible effort
that should reach full maturity in 5-7 years, and last for 15-18.” Robert Parker,
rated 90/100
“Textbook young Vintage Port. Beautiful aromas of crushed blackberries, mulberries
and flowers. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, with loads of grip. Super tannin
backbone.” Wine Spectator, rated 92-94/100
A finely crafted wine, showing concentration, sweet fruit and delicious toasty flavors.
With its final impression of delicious, sweet fruit, this is going to be a wine
to drink in 5 to 10 years.” Wine Enthusiast, rated 88-91/100
Taylor’s 2000 tastes like a young vintage of Château Latour on steroids. Aromas
of graphite, blackberry liqueur, créme de cassis and smoke jump from the glass.
Spectacularly concentrated and enormously endowed, with sweetness allied to
ripe tannin, decent acidity, and layer upon layer of fruit and extract, this is the
leading candidate for the port of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040.”
2000 Bordeaux
Second Labels
“Sometimes second place can beat coming in first. Consider Bordeaux’s ‘second wines,’ for example. Officially, these wines are made
from grapes that top châteaus don’t consider quite good enough for inclusion in their best wine, or ‘grand vin.’ But in a spectacular
vintage such as 2000, serious producers made wines of such high quality that even their second-best bottlings are terrific. And,
because they don’t carry the famous label, they are often great values as well. This issue, James Suckling points you to some of
Bordeaux’s best second wines.” Wine Spectator
Les Pagodes de Cos 92 points.................................................27.99
“Second wine of Chateau Cos d’Estournel. Very intense aromas of crushed berries
and pressed flowers, with a hint of currant bush. Full-bodied and chewy, with lots
of tannins but loads of fruit. A muscular, big wine. Very well-done. Best after 2010.”
Wine Spectator
Chateau Palmer Alter Ego 92 points .......................................44.99
“Second wine of Chateau Palmer. This is super for a second wine. Fantastic aromas
of chocolate, berry and coffee. Yet very classy and subtle. Full-bodied, with a
reserved, rich and caressing texture. Loads of ripe and wonderful fruit. Best after
2006.” Wine Spectator
Sarget de Gruaud-Larose 91 points .........................................22.99
“Second wine of Chateau Gruaud Larose. This chateau made a classic grand vin, and
the second wine is outstanding. very rich and plummy on the nose. Full-bodied,
with chewy tannins and plenty of fruit on the finish. Serious concentration here.
Best after 2007.” Wine Spectator
Chateau Bahans Haut-Brion 90 points....................................59.99
“Second wine of Chateau Haut-Brion. Berry, tobacco and coffee aromas. Mediumto
full bodied, with lots of flavor and a silky and luscious finish. Best after 2007.”
Wine Spectator
Chateau Haut-Bages-Averous 90 points ...................................34.99
“Second wine of Chateau Lynch Bages. Clean and focused, with raspberry, currant
and just the right amount of wood on the nose and palate. Medium-to full-bodied,
with silky tannins and a long finish. Best after 2005.” Wine Spectator
Moulin Riche 90 points.........................................................22.99
“Second wine of Chateau Leoville Poyferre. Impressive aromas of crushed berries,
blackberries and raspberries. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish.
This is a beautiful red than entices you to taste it. I mean drink it. Best after
2007.” Wine Spectator
Reserve de la Comtesse 90 points............................................29.99
“Second wine of Chateau Pichon-Longueville-Lalande. Rather decadent, with berry,
plum and tobacco character and a hint of meat. Medium-bodied, with chewy tannins
and a medium finish. Best after 2007.” Wine Spectator
“Second wine of Chateau Margaux. Margaux’s No. 2 was created in the 19th century,
but production was halted in the 1930’s. It was revived in the 1970’s by the father
of current sole owner, Corinne Mentzelopoulos. Best Pavillon Rouge I have ever
tasted. Glorious aromas of freshly picked raspberries, with tiny hints of cream and
minerals. Full-bodied, with superfine tannins and a long, long finish of berries and
cherries. Best after 2010. From France.” Wine Spectator
Les Forts de Latour 93 points ...................................3.0 liter 349.99
“Second wine of Chateau Latour. Les Forts is made from grapes from young vines
in the prime Vineyards —where-the mature-vine fruit that goes into Chateau Latour
is grown-near the Gironde, but also from secondary vineyards inland that are nearly
surrounded by Pichon-Lalande. Best Les Forts in years. Superenticing aromas of
crushed raspberries, Indian spices and hints of vanilla. Full-bodied, with a refined
and tight tannin structure and long, refreshing finish. A beauty. Best after 2009.”
Wine Spectator
Pensees de Lafleur 93 points.................................................139.99
“Second wine of Chateau Lafleur. It might seem excessive to squeeze a second wine
from an estate that owns fewer than 12 acres of vineyards and produces only 1,000
to 2,000 cases of its first wine per vintage, but owners Jacques an Sylvie Guinaudeau
introduced Pensees de Lafleur in the difficult 1987 vintage, and the results testify to
the wisdom of their decision. This is fantastic. Lots of black licorice, berry and wet
earth aromas. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a fantastic, fruit and mineral
aftertaste. Love this. Best after 2009. From Franc.” Wine Spectator
THE SECONDARY
OF THE
LABELS
Major Bordeaux
“Savvy consumers are discovering that many second
labels are among the best values to be found
in fine red wines.” Fine Wine Folio
Even those consumers affluent enough to enjoy the best vintages of such fine Bordeaux chateaux as Lafite, Margaux,
Latour, Haut-Brion, Pichon-Lalande, Leoville Las Cases, Cos d’Estournel, and Lynch-Bages-to name just a few of
the best-known vineyards-are no more averse to a bargain than the rest of us. So, if there’s a way for all of us to buy wines
from these very same vineyards at, say, a third of the price, we want to know of each year’s crop to bottle and sell under
the Chateau name. The best of the rest is marketed under a second label at a much lower price. Some of the more familiar
and widely available of these include Carruades de Lafite, Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, Les Forts de Latour,
Reserve de la Comtesse, and Clos du Marquis. Each of the second-label wines comes from the very same vineyard as the
chateau wine, is made by the same people in the same cellar, and is aged and bottled at the chateau. Simply put, the wine
sold under the second label has every legal right to be sold under the chateau name.
showing hints of clove and spice; medium-full body; forward,
fairly rich, plush, spicy, cedary, toasty, sweet cherry fruit flavors;
well balanced; medium-full tannin; slightly rough on the finish;
lingering aftertaste. very enjoyable to drink now though should
“Three Birds,” is another small production gem and their first GMS (Grenache,
Mourvedre, Syrah). The wine shows bright strawberry, pomegranate, and spice
aromas while keeping up the ripe fruit and tremendous concentration and depth
that we have come to expect from Carlisle wines. Another brilliant wine that
will surely not be around for long. Only 275 cases produced.
1999
Tignanello
“The deep ruby/purple-colored 1999 Tignanello exhibits rare
elegance married to considerable flavor intensity as well as
power. Normally a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet
Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in French oak for 12
months, the 1999 offers up aromas of new saddle leather
intertwined with black cherries, currants, creosote, vanilla, and
spice box. Rich and medium-bodied, with adequate acidity as
well as sweet but noticeable tannin, it is the third consecutive
exceptional vintage from this reference winery for modern,
aggressively-styled Tuscan reds.” Robert Parker, rated 92/100
“Attractive plum, cherry and berry aromas, with a hint of
toasted oak, Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a lovely,
sweet fruit, berry aftertaste. Delicious, Sangiovese, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.” Wine Spectator, rated 90/100
Guado al Tasso
“Spectacular, the 1999 Guado Al Tasso possesses sweet tannin and accessibility.
Its explosive aromatics consist of smoke, licorice, expresso, chocolate,
vanillin, and celestial black currants. With sensational concentration,
flamboyant flavors, an opulent texture, full body, and brilliant concentration
as well as delineation, it comes across as intense, balanced,
pure, and rich.” Robert Parker, rated 94/100
“The dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Masseto offers a fabulous bouquet
of sweet oak, black raspberries, blackberries, currants, new wood,
and licorice. Firmly-structured and medium to full-bodied yet remarkably
elegant, this impressive beauty needs 3-4 years of cellaring, and
should age for 15+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2019.” Robert
Parker, rated 94/100
“Superb red here. Gorgeous black olive and ripe fruit aromas in this
Merlot. Full-bodied, with big, rich and chewy tannins and a long, long,
ripe fruit finish. Fantastic. Best after 2006. 2,815 cases made.” Wine
Le Pigeoulet Rouge
DANIEL BRUNIER
"This beauty is a creation of the brilliant winemaking team, Frederic and Daniel
Brunier of Vieux Telegraph. They also own seven acres along-side the Rhone river
just outside the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation and seventeen more in stony soil
at the foot of the Mont Ventoux. Pigeoulet is from eighty percent Grenache with
some Syrah, Cabernet, and Carignan to complete the blend. The wine has been a hit
every year, but I don't think it has ever been this luscious and fun to drink. It tastes
like a red Rhone...well, it is a red Rhone, a delicious, irresistible
red Rhone. As a bargain, as a user-friendly, everyday
old reliable, it is hard to beat." Kermit Lynch
An Exceptional Buy!
1999
Quinault L’Enclos
St. Emilion
“This is an emerging St.-Emilion superstar run by Dr. Alain and Françoise Raynaud. Situated within the Libourne city limits on gravelly soils, Quinault could be
called the Haut-Brion of St.-Emilion given the fact that it 1) is totally surrounded by a clos (wall enclosure), 2) is within the city limits, and 3) possesses stony topsoils.
Since their first vintage in 1997, the Raynauds have taken this 37-acre walled vineyard to new heights. They continue to experiment with concentration techniques, but
the wine that ultimately results from a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc is beautifully pure and elegant, with considerable
aging potential. The last three vintages have been profound…This elegant, exotic, lush, medium-bodied, Burgundian-styled St.-Emilion boasts great complexity along
with an enticing perfume of blueberries, blackberries, and flowers. Although it does not possess a great deal of weight, it offers pure fruit, sweet tannin, and no hard
edges. This is a textbook example of Bordeaux at its richest and most elegant. It will be delicious in a few years, and evolve gracefully for 14-15 years.” Robert Parker,
rated 93/100
“Full ruby-red. Nose of roasted tobacco, mocha and currant offers considerable sex appeal. Silky, vinous and long on personality; warm iron and graphite notes add complexity
to the red and black berry flavors. Very rich and deep. Finishes quite long, with
lovely dusty tannins. With his third commercial release, Raynaud has produced a wine
that proves the high quality potential of his site…The ‘99, bottled in January with a
light fining but no filtration, has turned out splendidly; I would have picked it blind
as a top Pomerol.” Steve Tanzer, rated 92/100
Terms: ALL WINES ARE SOLD IN MISSOURI AND TITLE PASSES TO THE BUYER IN MISSOURI. We make no representation to the legal rights of anyone to ship or import alcoholic
beverages into any state outside of Missouri. The buyer is solely responsible for shipment of wines. By placing this order with your credit card, check or cash, you authorize Brown Derby
to act on your behalf in processing and shipping this order, including engaging a common carrier to deliver your order. WINES MAY BE SOLD AND DELIVERED ONLY TO PERSONS
WHO ARE AT LEAST 21 YEARS OLD AND IN PLACING YOUR ORDER, YOU REPRESENT TO US THAT YOU ARE AT LEAST 21 YEARS OLD AND THE PERSON TO WHOM
DELIVERY WILL BE MADE IS AT LEAST 21 YEARS OLD. When your alcoholic beverages are delivered, the person receiving delivery will be required to show identification proving that
he or she is at least 21 years old. All sales are subject to applicable Missouri state and any city sales taxes. All wines listed in this catalog are subject to availability. However, fine wines are not
produced on a large scale. Many vintage wines are limited in availability and, when they go out of stock, are usually not replaceable. New vintages and other similar wines replace those that are
no longer available. All of our wines are stored in a climate-controlled environment, and we take great care in checking the condition of the wine we purchase. However, as is tradition in the
wine trade, all bottles over 10 years old, are at the buyer’s risk. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, but in the event of a misprint, the price posted in the store will prevail.
Delivery: We use several ground carriers. For a normal ground shipment, allow 8 to 10 days to receive your order after it has been processed. Ground Rates are better for six or more cases
shipped to one location. Please inquire about rates for all shipments, as they are based on weight and delivery location. Affordable Second Day Air services and Next Day Air services are available
anywhere in the continental U.S. We cannot ship to a Post Office Box. On all residential deliveries, there will be a $2.00 upcharge. The purchaser is responsible for the claim of damage or
loss once the product leaves our premises. Note: Starting July 1st, 2002 all purchases
will automatically be charged 1% of the total purchase for insurance. Please be aware
that claims are difficult due to the myriad of alcohol transport regulations. We reserve
the right to hold wine orders up to 90 days before shipping as a quality control measure.
Wine can be damaged by temperature extremes. We will not ship if the temperature
in our area is above 75 degrees or below 40 degrees. It is your responsibility to
advise us what temperatures are in your area. We cannot be held responsible if you
request shipment and the wines travel in a climate outside an acceptable temperature
range. We will hold and store wine purchases up to 30 days. After that time a $3.00 per
case per month charge will be automatically assessed. Any cancellations are subject to a
10 percent restocking penalty. Occasionally, irreplaceable bottles will be broken in shipment
or somehow mishandled in the delivery system to us. In the event any wines do
not arrive, or are damaged in shipment to us, or are damaged by us prior to shipment
to you, we will make every effort to substitute, subject to your approval, wines of equivalent
value. Should we be unable to make an acceptable substitution, we will then
refund your payment together with 5 percent simple interest.
