WINES
1998 Falesco
Montiano
Rated 94/100, Robert Parker
“The terrific opaque purple-colored 1998
Montiano exhibits a spectacular bouquet of black
cherry liqueur, licorice, and toasty vanillin. The
wine explodes on the palate, offering copious quantities
of glycerin, cassis, black cherries, and blackberries.
As it sits in the glass, aromas and flavors of
melted chocolate and toasty oak emerge. The finish
lasts for 40+ seconds. This 1998 should drink well
for 10-15 years. Bravo!” Robert Parker, rated
94/100
1999 Falesco
Montiano
Rated 95/100, Robert Parker
“The profound, dense ruby/purple-colored 1999
Montiano (2,500 cases of 100% Merlot aged in
100% new French oak, and bottled unfined and
unfiltered) offers a smorgasbord of aromas, including
melted chocolate, espresso, blackberries, cherries,
currants, and smoke. Full-bodied, with terrific
purity, a multilayered texture, and surprising freshness
for a wine of such depth, it can be drunk
young, or cellared for 10-15 years. For technicians
who care about such things, it has a whopping 37
grams per liter of dry extract.” Robert Parker, rated
95/100
1997 Agricola
Querciabella
Decanter Award, May 2001
Intense nose of plummy fruit with a hint of
liquorice and spicy oak. Rich and full-bodied with
good concentration of ripe, sweet black fruits. Firm
tannins, long finish. Decanter Award.” Decanter
2000 Castello
Vigna d’Alceo
Rated 98/100, Robert Parker
“A classic! For whatever reason, the full-bodied
2000 Vigna d’Alceo was roaring the day I tasted it.
A single vineyard blend of 85% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese, it tastes like the
Sammarco on steroids. It boasts a deep purple
color in addition to scents of espresso, sweet melted
licorice, black currant jam, and toasty oak.
There is great intensity, superb purity, and a finish
that lingers for nearly a minute. This mythical
wine requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and will age
effortlessly for two decades.” Rated 98/100, Robert
Casanova di Neri
Pietradonice
Less than 700 cases produced
A Classic Rating of 95 Points
“…two wines from the vintage (2000) that
deserved classic ratings of 95 points: the pure
Merlot from Petrolo, Galatrona ($90), and a new
Cabernet Sauvignon blend, (75% Cabernet, 25%
Sangiovese) the Toscana Pietradonice ($90), from
Casanova di Neri, which is better known for its
Brunello. ‘We were lucky,’ says Giacomo Neri of
Casanova di Neri. ‘Our new wine came from a
region in Brunello di Montalcino that is less susceptible
to drought, so the grapes were not dehydrated.
We made a balanced wine.’ Neri’s 2000
Cabernet blend and other producers’ wines that
scored in the 90s are certainly worth searching for.”
1998 & 1999
Barone Ricasoli
Casalferro
Casalferro is produced from the selection of the
best Sangiovese grapes and other red grapes
such as Merlot, grown on the estate. After the
initial fermentation and maceration with the
skins, Casalferro is matured in barriques for a
period ranging from sixteen to eighteen months;
this is followed by a lengthy refinement in the
bottle.
The 1999 is truly remarkable, following
brilliantly in the footsteps of the 1997 and
1998. The 1998 was rated 92/100 by the Wine
Spectator and received “Tre Bicchieri,” or “Three
Glasses” the highest recognition given to Italy’s
best wines by Gambero Rosso.
