Penner Ash
As a teenager Lynn spent her summers working for the Smithsonian Institute in
Washington, D.C. Her curiosity for the natural world lead her to UC Davis to
study Botany. It didn’t take long for her to realize that crushing grapes is a lot
more interesting (and fun!) than dissecting flower stamens. Upon graduating
with degrees in both Enology and Viticulture, Lynn gained invaluable experience
in some of Napa’s premier wineries, including Domaine Chandon, Chateau St.Jean and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars.
In 1988 Lynn and Ron headed north to the “Land of Endless Rainbows” and a young emerging wine industry.
Lynn spent the next 14 years producing world-class wines as winemaker/president of Rex Hill Vineyards Vineyards.
Just last year she turned over the reins at Rex Hill to join her husband, Ron, to focus full-time on Penner-Ash Wine
Cellars.
Lynn and Ron are currently producing their wines at the Carlton Winemakers Studio, a cooperative venture
located in the heart of the Northern Willamette Valley wine region. Along with partners Chris and Tyanne Dussin, Lynn
and Ron have purchased 80 acres of vineyard property located of Ribbon Ridge Road. The first phase of planting was
completed this past April. Dussin Vineyard will be planted to 100% Pinot Noir and will be the site of Penner-Ash Wine
Cellars for Harvest 2005.
“Cupa Numismae”
CHÂTEAU LA ROQUE
JACK BOUTIN, PROPRIETOR,
HIS DAUGHTER AND WIFE
The 2000 vintage was recently a Wine Spectator Selection, scoring 93 points on
a 100-point scale. The other 93 pointers on the page were $50 and $37 per bottle.
(It pays to stick with us, folks.) They mentioned its “almost Hermitage-like
structure.” They did not say “Hermitage-like character,” but at this price we’ll
settle for anything Hermitage-like, don’t you agree
La Roque’s cuvée Spéciale, Cupa Numismae 2001, has a deep, pure
Syrah nose. It is, after all, two-thirds Syrah. The ripe Mourvèdre (the other
third) makes its presence felt on the palate: tasty, enveloping, with abundant,
texturally correct tannins.
