Normally a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in French oak for 12 months, the 1999 offers up aromas of new saddle leather intertwined with black cherries, currants, creosote, vanilla, and spice box. They also own seven acres along-side the Rhone river just outside the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation and seventeen more in stony soil at the foot of the Mont Ventoux. Pigeoulet is from eighty percent Grenache with some Syrah, Cabernet, and Carignan to complete the blend. The wine has been a hit every year, but I don't think it has ever been this luscious and fun to drink. It tastes like a red Rhone...well, it is a red Rhone, a delicious, irresistible red Rhone.
