Page 8 — Silver Lake Leader, Thursday, July 18, 2013Scouting soybeans now will pay offFarm NotesBy Nathan Winter, ExtensionSource: David Nicolai, Extensioneducator - crops, U ofM Extension Regional Center,Farmington, 651-480-7706,nico0071@umn.edu.Scout your soybean fieldsfor effective control five to 10days after your post-emergenceherbicide application.Scouting will allow you todetermine if any timely rescuemanagement practices will benecessary. For those of youdiscouraged by dry soil conditionsthat resulted in poor activationof soil residualherbicides, Dr. Jeff Gunsolus,University of Minnesota Extensionweed specialist, asksyou to remember that laterrainfall events will activate theherbicide and reduce the likelihoodof late-emerging weeds(waterhemp, for example)from emerging and going toseed in the fall. This summer many soybeanfields are exhibiting multiplegrowth flushes of weeds dependingon local rainfallevents. Growers need to managelarger individual weedplants in soybean fields if theywere not controlled earlier inthe growing season. If left untendedand without crop competitiondue to previous toodry or too wet soil conditions, giant ragweed can produce approximately10,000; commonwaterhemp 70,000; and waterhemp100,000 seeds, or more, per plant. Such large additionsto the weed seed bank makenext year’s weed managementtactics less effective becauseas weed density increases herbicideeffectiveness decreases.Seed dormancy also contributesto long-term weedmanagement problems. Theestimated time to reduce theweed seed bank by 50 percentis 12 years for common lambsquartersand three years forcommon waterhemp. Giantragweed populations tend todecline more rapidly, with estimatesof 99 percent reductionwithin two years if seed isleft near the soil surface. Aconfounding factor to consideris that many giant ragweedand waterhemp populationsare likely resistant toglyphosate and/or ALS herbicides.“Keep in mind that the longtermgoal of weed managementis to deplete weed seedreserves and to reduce selectingfor herbicide-resistance bydiversification of weed-controltactics,” Gunsolus said. This would include early seasontimely rotary hoeing asweeds begin to germinate inthe spring and inter-row cultivationof weed escapes as wellas effective sequential herbicideprograms consisting of apre-emergence and post emergenceherbicide applicationprograms.Soil residual herbicides thattarget your most troublesomeweeds provide an excellentstart in managing herbicide-resistantweeds by targetingthem when they are most vulnerable. They also provide theadded benefit of reducing cropyield-loss due to weed competitionfrom delayed post emergenceherbicide applications.Letter to the Editor‘Summer’ funSummer Blazinski (above) spent the afternoonwith Grandma, Deb Blazinski, last Thursday evening at Legion ParkSilver Lake Leader photo by Alyssa Schauerduring Music in the Park. Inthe next decade, studies willbe compiled on the achievementgap, wondering whathappened to the students whoare under-performing. Duh! Ifthey never learned to read becauseof cuts to Head Start —what a crime! If they have noaspirations beyond their currentstatus in life, studies arenot going to do them a lot ofgood. When businesses arecrying for competent workersto make more money for them, could it possibly be the cuts toHead Start? If the prisons arecrowded with people whoseonly survival depends on howgood they are at a life ofcrime, what then? The longterm effects of this “smallergovernment” mantra will bestaggering.Members of the “greatestgeneration” may also beharmed by this sequester.Funding for the successful“meals on wheels” programfor seniors was also affectedby this sequester. Malnourishedseniors equals older peoplewho may need moreintensive care (read cost more)should they become ill. Again,short-sighted … and morecostly. All you chest-thumping, US“uber alles” people should beprotesting this sequester. Thepay for the non-combat militaryis also being cut by 20percent — maintenance isn’tbeing done on ships and otheraccouterments of the militarybecause the cut in funds to themilitary defense. See “60 Minutes”reporting on July 7 onCBS.Ever been without a job?Even if you have skills, itcould happen to you. The burstof the housing bubble and concomitantloss of jobs had peopleunemployed who havenever been before in theirlives. It is down right scary —the unemployment compensationtided you over until youwere able to secure employmentagain. The sequester cutswill end the unemploymentcompensation for those unfortunateenough not to havefound work. The ultimate chutzpah waswhen the sequester affectedone of the spring/summerbreaks for Congress. It tookthem a matter of hours to liftthe furloughs on air trafficcontrollers because theirflights were being delayed.OOPs! — their ox was beinggored! I was happy for the airtraffic controllers because Ithink their jobs are of vital importance, but the audacity!Do you see a pattern here? Those affected are the poor, the young, the old, the peoplewho have no political voice. Itis about time that Congressthinks beyond the next quarter’searnings, regardless ofwhat is happening to the Shipof State. The Ship of Stateneeds your attention.Jan ConnerHutchinsonGet the Summer FREESummer Subscription Special3 Months FREE on a 1 year subscription or renewal to theMcLeod County Chronicle or Silver Lake LeaderSave money, save time and get your sports reports, classifieds, local andbusiness news, and much more, delivered right to your door every week.Summer Special 2013 • 1-Year Subscription + 3 Months FREENameMailing AddressCity/State/ZipPlease indicate: Chronicle Leader (See price list to the right)Please indicate: New Renewal❒ Check Enclosed ❒ Bill my credit card ❒ i ❒ r ❒ a ❒ qCharge acct.# __________________________________________Exp. date ____________Signature: _________________________Mail to our Glencoe office at:The McLeod County Chronicle P.O.
