ThePanthers did, however, defeatBelgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 5-2,which head coach RobbDeCorsey was pleased with.GSL is behind ProvidenceAcademy and Holy Family insection seedings, and willneed a win this week in orderto maintain the current ranking.The Panthers hostHutchinson and New London-Spicer this week, both conferenceopponents.“The big one now is to takecare of business on Thursdaywith New London,”By Josh RandtSports EditorThe boys’ cross countryteam posted another top-10finish last week, competing atBaylor Park against 19 teamswith 132 runners.A fifth-place finish wasgood for 155 points, as BrandonRichter and Jac Chelmancontinue to lead the way forGlencoe-Silver Lake.The two finished one afteranother, with Richter taking10th place (17:38) and Chelman11th (17:45).Garrett Ober finished in24th place as GSL’s No.3runner, with a time of 18:30.Head coach Jeff Delwichesaid his team needs to findsome solid runners in the latterhalf of the lineup to startplacing a little higher.“We have some really goodperformances from half theteam, we just need to put itall together,” Delwiche said.“We don’t need anotherfourth in there, we needsomeone closer to Ober,Chelman and those guys.”GSL finished three spotsbehind Jordan at Baylor, andtwo spots behind them at themeet held in Montgomerytwo weeks ago. Deputies were unableto locate the semi.The sheriff’s office assisted theBrownton Police with a juvenilecall at 7:53 a.m., Tuesday. Thejuveniles were transported to theirschools.A report of pigs loose in thearea of County Road 9, north ofLester Prairie, was reported at10:35 a.m., Tuesday. Fifty percentof corn was in the dent stage,compared to 72 percent average.A concern for the balanceof this fall and next spring isthe amount of moisture in thetopsoil, which was rated lastweek as 31 percent very shortand 38 percent short acrossMinnesota’s major cropgrowing area.In many areas of the state,however, the corn is yet rated44 percent in good conditionbecause of previous rains thissummer and good water holdingcapacities in heavier texturedsoils in southern Minnesota.Corn growers in Minnesotamay want to predict grainyields prior to harvest inorder to help develop grainmarketing and harvest plans.One option is to use a recentlyupdated yield componentmethod originally developedby the Agricultural EngineeringDepartment at theUniversity of Illinois. Theseyield components includenumber of ears per acre,number of kernel rows perear, number of kernels perrow, and weight per kernel.Final weight per kernel obviouslycannot be measureduntil the grain is mature (kernelblack layer) and, realistically,at harvest moisture.Consequently, an averagevalue for kernel weight, expressedas 80,000 kernels per56-pound bushel, is used as aproverbial “fudge factor” inthe yield estimation equation.The equation originallyused a “fudge factor” of 90,but kernel size has increasedas hybrids have improvedover the years. Consequently,a “fudge factor” of 75 to 85 isa more realistic value to use24 thAnnualtoday.Crop uniformity greatly influencesthe accuracy of anyyield estimation technique.The less uniform the field,the greater the number ofsamples that should be takento estimate yield for the field.Calculate estimated grainyield using the yield componentmethod as follows:• Count the number of harvestableears in a length ofrow equivalent to 1/1000thacre. For 30-inch (2.5 feet)rows, this equals 17.4 feet.For other row spacings, divide43,560 by the row spacing(in feet) and then dividethat result by 1000.• On every fifth ear, countthe number of kernel rowsper ear and determine the average.Try to use a systemsuch as the fifth, ninth and13th ears from one end of therow.• On each of these earscount the number of kernelsper row and determine theaverage. Then multiply eachear’s row number by its numberof kernels per row to calculatethe total number ofkernels for each ear. (Do notcount kernels on either thebutt or tip of the ear that areless than half the size of normalsize kernels.)• Yield (bushels per acre)equals (ear number) x (averagerow number) x (averagekernel number) divided by80* = bushels per acre.• *Range in kernel numberper bushel based on growingconditions: Excellent = lessthan 75; average = 75 to 85;and poor growing conditions= greater than 85.• Repeat the procedure forat least four additional sitesacross the field.
