2013-2014 Silver Lake Guide BookLuce Line Trail offers a variety of recreationSilver Lake, in conjunction with thecities of Hutchinson and Winsted, isworking on improving the quality ofthe Luce Line State Trail. The cities have sought legislation tobe included in the State Bonding Billfor the appropriation of funds to pavethe trail from Winsted to Cedar Mills. These cities, along with McLeodCounty, have put forth money to movethis process along.Currently, the Luce Line Trail consistsof crushed gravel, and can be usedfor biking, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling, andskiing. The trail, which is a 63-mile-longformer railroad track that runs from theTwin Cities west past Cosmos, stretchesacross varied landscapes of metropolitanand rural Minnesota. It is a preserved strip of countrysidealive with many varieties of plants andanimals.Rolling stands of sugar maple andbasswood, along with many colorfulplants can be found in the east. West ofHutchinson, the woods give way toremnants of the tall-grass prairie, withmany prairie plants still visible. The trail is also home to muchwildlife, including deer, fox, mink, owls, and pheasants. The many adjacentlakes also support habitats forducks and geese. With the state bonding bill monies, the trail could be paved with a bituminoussurfacing material, and accordingto authorities in favor of paving thetrail, this would provide a “superiorsurface” for biking, rollerblading, walking, jogging, cross-country skiing,The Luce Line Trail, a 63-mile recreation trail from Plymouth to Cosmosis used for walking, biking, horseback riding and snowmobiling.and snowmobiling.According to Steve Cook, mayor ofHutchinson and advocate for thepaving of the trail, a “paved trail betweenthe cities would provide a backboneconnection to local trail systemsbetween Winsted, Silver Lake, andHutchinson.”The Luce Line Trail has been underthe control of the Department of NaturalResources (DNR) since 1976, andtheir “master plan” for the trail, writtenin 1998, has identified a large portionof this section to be paved to accomodatelocal needs. The paved 10-foot wide trail sectionwould run approximately 25 milesfrom Winsted to Cedar Mills. Besidesproviding a variety of uses for non-motorizedrecreational activities, the trail9would also accomodate snowmobiletraffic and provide parallel sections tofacilitate horseback riding. The estimated cost for planning andconstruction is $2.5 million.Key benefits of the plan include:• Safer alternate routes for exerciseand commuting.• Increased options for physical activityto promote healthier lifestyles foradults, children, and families.• Valuable means to connect userswith nature and the environment.• More opportunities for “trail connectivity”and use between communities.• Consistency with the “Master Plan”written by the Minnesota DNR.• “Kid and wheelchair friendly” surfacingfor little legs and wheelchairs.Another benefit to paving the trailincludes connections to other trail systems.A paved Luce Line State Trail, accordingto Cook, would create newrecreational opportunities for users ofthe system from around the entire state. This system would be enhanced furtherby future linkages to the DakotaState Trail, which is a relatively shortdistance to the south.Within Silver Lake, the city and organizations, such as the Silver LakeLake Enhancement Association, havebeen working to make the trail systemmore “user friendly” by installingbenches along Silver Lake, and creatinga dirt trail in front of Cedar CrestEstate in Silver Lake, complete with afishing pier.

The history of Silver Lakecan be traced back to the beginningof McLeod County itself, according to the 1989Silver Lake “Centennial”book.Settlement of the areabegan in the 1850s after theMinnesota Territory was acquiredfrom the Sioux withthe Treaty of Traverse DesSioux in 1851.In spring 1855, a party ofmen consisting of MartinMcLeod, Col. J.H. Stevensand others explored the areaand founded the town ofGlencoe, now the county seat.At about the same time, thethree Hutchinson brotherschose a spot northwest ofGlencoe and established thecity of Hutchinson.Silver Lake is known for itsCzechoslovakian and Polishancestry. The first Czechs arrivedin 1858 and settled inRich Valley Township east ofHutchinson. Some of theearly family names are stillremembered today — Kasper,Maly and Navratil.During the Sioux Uprisingof 1862, the Czech familiesbanded together at the Kasperhome, built their own stockade, sent out scouting parties, continued to try to harvesttheir crops and suffered no casualtiesduring the ordeal.2013-2014 Silver Lake Guide BookSilver Lake, a city known forits Czech, Polish ancestryThe beginning of SilverLake (once called Fremont)probably happened in the1860s.Like most communities, aneed for a church and a cemeteryplayed a role in the earlyestablishment in the area. The Czech Catholics establisheda cemetery at BearCreek, about four miles southof what is now Silver Lake.Though not much is knownabout the Polish migrationinto the area, people of Polishdescent built a Catholicchurch in the village of SilverLake itself, with the help ofthe Czechs, in about 1879.The residents of Protestantdescent began holding religiousservices in their homes.Eventually, they formed theCzech Evangelical ReformedChurch, finally building achurch home in 1881 after adelay caused by a grasshopperinvasion. Also in 1881, the SilverLake townsite was laid out bypioneers Jan Jerabek, Jan Totusekand John Mimms, whowere operating a general storeand saw mill. Eight yearslater, a petition was presentedto the McLeod County Boardto incorporate the townsiteinto a village, which wasgrantedSurprisingly, Silver Lakedid not fall to thesame fate as othercommunitieswhich were bypassedby therailroad. In 1887, theMinneapolis Lyndaleand MinnetonkaRailroadwas built throughto Hutchinson. The railroad hadproposed to comeon the north sideof the lake andthrough the town, and had askedfor a subventionof $6,000.But the businessmenandfarmers wereunable to raisethis large sum,and the railroadline was laidon the southside of thelake. A Mr.F.D. Fimon, who owned theland, gave therailroad 60acres and expecteda townto spring up.This futuretown was often referred to asSouth Chicago, although itwas rumored that a town of“Fimon” was platted. But tomost people, it was simplyknown as South Silver Lake.A side track and a few storeswere built, but the land waslow and swampy and not desirable, and eventually SouthSilver Lake faded away. The churches have alwaysplayed an important part inSilver Lake’s history. TheCzech and Polish Catholicsworshiped together until1894, when Father Jiranek, aBohemian priest in charge ofthe Polish church, took stepsto establish a Czech congregation. The following year, the Church of St. Joseph wasbuilt and Father Jaroslav Cermakbecame its first pastor. Aparochial school was establishedin 1930.The Polish Church of St.Adalbert also founded aparochial school, much earlierthan that of St. Joseph. The first pastor for theProtestants was Jan Prucha, college student. He served thechurch in 1887-89, but thenreturned to his theologicalstudies.29File photosThe above liquor store is one of thebusinesses in Silver Lake in theearly 1900s.Later, dissension resulted insome members of the CzechEvangelical ReformedChurch splitting off and formingthe Free ReformedChurch. One of the oldest organizationsin the area was the BohemianReading and EducationalSociety, founded in1876, and which had its ownbuilding halfway between SilverLake and Hutchinson. Itmaintained its own library ofabout 1,000 volumes ofCzech books in the fields ofhistory, politics, literature andphilosophy.Until 1893, the only publicschools were rural districts, one of which had a schoolhousenot far from the villagelimits. Then, Independent SchoolDistrict 38 was organized anda four-room schoolhouse wasbuilt on the shore of SilverLake. In 1912, a high schooldepartment was organizedand graduated its first class in1914, with a total of fivemembers. The village for many yearsalso had a bustling commerciallife, with a brewery, acreamery, and many others.
