2013-2014 <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Guide BookGSL: Continues to excel at many levels<strong>The</strong> Glencoe-<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> SchoolDistrict continues to <strong>of</strong>fer a formidablenumber <strong>of</strong> opportunities for its students.<strong>The</strong> latest being a competitiverobotics program combining math,science and engineering skills; a supermileagevehicle program; and atrap shooting club for the outdoors enthusisasts.<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> six communities— Biscay, Glencoe, New Auburn,Plato and Brownton arethe others — whosepre-school, school-agedand adult populations areserved by Glencoe-<strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong> School District2859.Consolidated in 1996from the former <strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong> School District 425and the Glencoe SchoolDistrict 422, GSL SchoolDistrict 2859 provides aquality array <strong>of</strong> academic,co-curricular, extracurricular,social, recreationaland community programsand services to over 1,700students in grades P-K-12.Also new will be theaddition onto the LincolnJr. High School to house the youngest<strong>of</strong> the district’s students in its EarlyChildhood Family Education/SpecialEducation (ECFE/ECSE) and learningreadiness programs. Work begins in2013 with the addition expected to beready by the end <strong>of</strong> the year.As the 2013-14 school year begins,the grade level configuration <strong>of</strong> theschool district remain Pre-K-2, 3-6, 7-8, 9-12 with educational programminglocated in four facilities. Helen BakerElementary (Glencoe) houses the district’spre-school and K-2 students,while <strong>Lake</strong>side Elementary (<strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong>) serves all district students ingrades 3-6. Lincoln Junior High(Glencoe), grade 7-8 youngsters, andGlencoe-<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> High School(Glencoe), grade 9-12 students, are locatedon a common site, along withthe multipurpose Panther Field Houseand new outdoor athletic complex innortheast Glencoe.<strong>The</strong> district provides its own specialeducation programs, working with theLittle Crow Special Ed. Co-op.<strong>The</strong> school district is governed by asix-member school board which meetsmonthly (typically on the secondMonday) in the media center at Glencoe-<strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong> High School at 1825E. 16th St., Glencoe.GSL’s teaching, specialist, supportand administrative staffs are dedicatedto providing quality programs and servicesto the pre-school, school-agedand adult populations.Added to the GSL curriculum during the 2012-13 schoolyear were a competitive robotics program, above, a supermileagevehicle program and a trap shooting club.Staff in-service training and curriculumdevelopment ensures the schooldistrict’s staff employs “best instructionalpractices and current curricular(subject) content.”ChristopherSonju is schoolsuperintendent.Providing otherleadership areprincipals, BillButler, HelenBaker Elementary;MichelleWang, <strong>Lake</strong>sideElementary;Paul Sparby,GSL HighSchool; JanMackenthun, director<strong>of</strong> ECFEand pre-school;Jeff Jenson, director<strong>of</strong> technologyand informationsystems;and Tina19Schauer, director <strong>of</strong> community education/PantherField House coordinator.GSL has a strong reputation amongschool districts in central Minnesotafor providing an appealing array <strong>of</strong>programs and services, includingschool-aged childcare; learning readinessand ECFE programming; allday/every day kindergarten; and excellentprograms and services at all organizationallevels.<strong>The</strong> school district’s instructionalprogrammingis comprehensive in itsdesign, preparing studentsfor entry into the world <strong>of</strong>work, post-secondarytechnical college training,or university study, as personalgoals and interestsmay dictate.Course <strong>of</strong>ferings atGSL High School arefound in 12 subject matterdisciplines, includingagricultural education, art,business, English, familyand consumer science, industrialtechnology, mathematics,music, physicaleducation and health, science,social studies, and world languages.Qualifying students at thehigh school level may participate inGSLContinued on page 20GSL has an extensive music program including jazzband as pictured above.
