2013-2014 Silver Lake Guide BookSilver Lake emergency servicesSilver Lake PoliceThe Silver Lake Police Department is aproactive police department that prides itselfon community-oriented policing, with its missionstatement being: “To provide public protectionfrom crime and provide services thatenhance the safety and quality of life for theCity of Silver Lake.”The department consists of one full-timechief, one full-time officer, and three part-time officers.Treating everyone in a professional, respectful, andcourteous manner is what goes a long way for the SilverLake Police Department.Members of the department train and work closelywith the Silver Lake Ambulance, Silver Lake Fire Department,and the Silver Lake First Responders.Roles for the police department include things such asescorts for businesses, residential and business checks,community events, and security for the public.Residents may speak with an officer by calling 320-327-0108, or by contacting the McLeod County Sheriff’sOffice at 320-864-3134 and leaving a message foran officer. The police department can also be contactedby sending an email to silverlakepolice@mchsi.com. Inan emergency, residents are strongly advised to call 911.The police department encourages residents to reportany suspicious activity they observe.7Silver Lake AmbulanceSince 1970, the Silver Lake Ambulance has providedthe City of Silver Lake, Hale Township andportions of Rich Valley Township with Basic LifeSupport (BLS) ambulance service, responding toover 100 calls per year. Approximately 15 Minnesotacertified EMTs staff the ambulance service,providing 24/7 coverage.The ambulance is a 1995 MedTec on a Fordchassis. Along with the state-required BLS equipment,the service has variances, which allow it to carryand administer several potential life-saving medications.The ambulance is funded by the City of Silver Lake,Hale Township and Rich Valley Township. In addition,the ambulance staff conducts an annual fund raisier forSilver Lake FireFor more than 100 years the Silver Lake FireDepartment has proudly provided fire and rescueprotection to the residents of the city of SilverLake, Hale Township, and portions of Rich Valley,Winsted and Hassan Valley townships.With the strong support of the city and townships,the department maintains two pumpertrucks, two tanker trucks, a rescue van equippedwith the jaws of life, a gamma goat (grass rig) anda six-wheeler for the fire and rescue activities. Thedepartment also maintains a vintage 1932 pumpertruck, which is proudly shown in parades.Silver Lake firefighters are required to attend the basicfirefighter course through South Central Technical Collegeduring their probationary first year on the department.In addition to their initial training, the firefightersattend drills twice a month and the department holdsadditional funding for equipment acquisition.The ambulance service meets every second Thursdayof the month in the Silver Lake Auditorium. Anyone interestedin joining the service can contact the Silver LakeCity Hall at 320-327-2412.monthly meetings.The department is 30 members strong. In addition todrills and training the department is also active in theschools and the community providing fire preventiontraining.
