2013-2014 <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Guide Book<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> emergency services<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Police<strong>The</strong> <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Police Department is aproactive police department that prides itselfon community-oriented policing, with its missionstatement being: “To provide public protectionfrom crime and provide services thatenhance the safety and quality <strong>of</strong> life for the<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>.”<strong>The</strong> department consists <strong>of</strong> one full-timechief, one full-time <strong>of</strong>ficer, and three part-time <strong>of</strong>ficers.Treating everyone in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional, respectful, andcourteous manner is what goes a long way for the <strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong> Police Department.Members <strong>of</strong> the department train and work closelywith the <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Ambulance, <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Fire Department,and the <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> First Responders.Roles for the police department include things such asescorts for businesses, residential and business checks,community events, and security for the public.Residents may speak with an <strong>of</strong>ficer by calling 320-327-0108, or by contacting the <strong>McLeod</strong> <strong>County</strong> Sheriff’sOffice at 320-864-3134 and leaving a message foran <strong>of</strong>ficer. <strong>The</strong> police department can also be contactedby sending an email to silverlakepolice@mchsi.com. Inan emergency, residents are strongly advised to call 911.<strong>The</strong> police department encourages residents to reportany suspicious activity they observe.7<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> AmbulanceSince 1970, the <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Ambulance has providedthe <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>, Hale Township andportions <strong>of</strong> Rich Valley Township with Basic LifeSupport (BLS) ambulance service, responding toover 100 calls per year. Approximately 15 Minnesotacertified EMTs staff the ambulance service,providing 24/7 coverage.<strong>The</strong> ambulance is a 1995 MedTec on a Fordchassis. Along with the state-required BLS equipment,the service has variances, which allow it to carryand administer several potential life-saving medications.<strong>The</strong> ambulance is funded by the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>,Hale Township and Rich Valley Township. In addition,the ambulance staff conducts an annual fund raisier for<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> FireFor more than 100 years the <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> FireDepartment has proudly provided fire and rescueprotection to the residents <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> <strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong>, Hale Township, and portions <strong>of</strong> Rich Valley,Winsted and Hassan Valley townships.With the strong support <strong>of</strong> the city and townships,the department maintains two pumpertrucks, two tanker trucks, a rescue van equippedwith the jaws <strong>of</strong> life, a gamma goat (grass rig) anda six-wheeler for the fire and rescue activities. <strong>The</strong>department also maintains a vintage 1932 pumpertruck, which is proudly shown in parades.<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> firefighters are required to attend the basicfirefighter course through South Central Technical Collegeduring their probationary first year on the department.In addition to their initial training, the firefightersattend drills twice a month and the department holdsadditional funding for equipment acquisition.<strong>The</strong> ambulance service meets every second Thursday<strong>of</strong> the month in the <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Auditorium. Anyone interestedin joining the service can contact the <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong><strong>City</strong> Hall at 320-327-2412.monthly meetings.<strong>The</strong> department is 30 members strong. In addition todrills and training the department is also active in theschools and the community providing fire preventiontraining.
