2013-2014 <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Guide BookPlanning for <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>’s future<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> will be seeingmany improvements in thenext few years, includingupgrades, sidewalk improvements,and potential business.One <strong>of</strong> the improvementsincludes making <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>more “pedestrian-friendly.”For the past couple <strong>of</strong> years,the <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong> Counciland local organizations havebeen working to accomplishthis goal.Last July, members <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Enhancementpurchased and placedbenches along <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>,and worked with the MinnesotaDNR to install tw<strong>of</strong>ishing piers on <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>.One pier, which wasreused from the fishing pieron Swan <strong>Lake</strong>, sits at thenortheast end <strong>of</strong> the lake,along Gehlen Avenue.<strong>The</strong> second pier is locatedin front <strong>of</strong> Cedar Crest Estatein <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>, along thenortheast shore.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> EnhancementAssociation, along withother local organizations andvolunteers, worked to createa gravel trail <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> MainStreet South leading to thepier.This association also hostsan annual “shore clean up”event where volunteers workto clean up the shore line <strong>of</strong>the lake, raking, mowing,and removing brush.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong>Council is also working toincrease sidewalk and crosswalksafety, and as part <strong>of</strong>the reconstruction project onGrove Avenue (<strong>County</strong> StateAid Highway 2), the councilis installing a sidewalk onGrove Avenue south <strong>of</strong> MainNew ceiling tiles being installed in the auditorium.Above is the new pier on <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> as it was being constructed.Street.More improvements to thecity can be found in the upgrading<strong>of</strong> water meters andreplacement <strong>of</strong> hydrants.As part <strong>of</strong> the bonding forthe Grove Avenue project,the city has included costs toreplace 20 water hydrantsand upgrade all <strong>of</strong> the watermeters in the city.<strong>The</strong> project was set to startin April 2013 and will becompleted by September2013.<strong>City</strong> Clerk Kerry Venieralso said the city has beeninvolved in supporting thepaving <strong>of</strong> the Luce LineTrail.“We are hoping that afterthe Luce Line Trail is paved,we can work to connect it tothe Dakota Rail Trail, locatedsouthwest <strong>of</strong> <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>.”He added that the <strong>City</strong>will continue to maintainand increase “pedestrianfriendly”routes throughoutthe city.Venier said he and thecouncil believe a pavedLuce Line Trail will bringmore traffic into <strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong>, and more business forthe local owners.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> BusinessAssociation is also working11to grow business in <strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong>, and hopes to meetwith the local bank and citycouncilors to discuss affordableoptions for businessowners.Other improvements in<strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> include the remodeling<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>Auditorium.In 2011, local organizationsin <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>, includingthe <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> CivicAssociation, <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>Lions, <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Sportsmen’sClub, and GFWC <strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong> Women’s Club,volunteered to repaint theauditorium as part <strong>of</strong> aValspar painting grant.After painting the upstairsportion, the Civic Associationdecided to purchase andreplace all the ceiling tiles.<strong>The</strong> Civic Associationcontinued to upgrade the auditoriumby replacing thewooden booths with tablesand chairs purchased fromthe <strong>Lake</strong> Marion Ballroomauction earlier this year.Currently, the <strong>Silver</strong> <strong>Lake</strong><strong>City</strong> Council, the Civic Association,and the <strong>Silver</strong><strong>Lake</strong> Lions are now lookinginto fixing and repairing thefront <strong>of</strong> the auditoriumbuilding.
