Playing and PreparationOverview 2011Mental1. Get players to have and knowtheir individual performanceroutines (eg. Consistent run upfor Bowlers, Consistent set upfor Batters and Fielders move inwith bowlers/ hands up ready)2. Develop team rules for conduct,dress, warm ups, training andplaying.Technical<strong>Cricket</strong> is a skill game requiringhigh levels of technique. To ensuresuccess the following key technicalaspects need to be reinforced:1. Batting: Setup with centremarked, grip, stance and backliftcorrect.Control bat with top hand.Footwork either forward or back2. Pace Bowling: Run up - efficientrunning technique and inline with target.Action – compact and in linewith target.Seam – keep the seam uprightto allow movement.3. Spin Bowling: Run up – relativelystraight and relaxed.Action – strong front arm, highrelease point to allow over spinon ball4. Fielding: Move in with thebowler in an athletic position/hands open and upPhysical1. Use TSS warm up plan (overleaf)2. R.I.C.E. and D.R.A.B.C. allinjuries and report any incidents3. Manage pace bowler’sworkloads so they are notbowling more than two sessionsa week at training.Tactical1. TSS Clothing & EquipmentExpectations<strong>The</strong> <strong>Southport</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Cricket</strong> hasa proud history and pride in ourappearance. Whilst summer uniformis not required for travel to and fromgames there are expectations and safetyregulations for uniform that need to beadhered to. <strong>The</strong>se expectations are asfollows:Training and Travelling To and FromGames:A TSS white training/ PE/ House shirt,navy shorts is required. During games,players are able to change from theirwhites to their training gear providedsocks and sports shoes are worn.Further training accessories includea navy TSS peak cap, or white widebrimmed cricket hat, and TSS whitesocks with mostly white training sportshoes. Skateboard or other shoes arenot appropriate. No open footwear is tobe worn at any time. <strong>The</strong> cap and socksare available from the TSS Uniform Shoplocated in the Centenary Centre.Please be aware that students wearingincorrect uniform may be refused to play.Games:Boys are to wear long white trouserswhich can be purchased from anysupplier. Shirts must be of the TSSapproved cricket shirt that is onlypurchased from <strong>The</strong> Store. It is anexpectation of the etiquette of the gameof cricket that shirts are tucked in andyour appearance to be tidy.Footwear includes white TSS socks andwhite cricket shoes. As most games atTSS are on turf, spikes are essential.Rubber shoes do not provide thenecessary grip on a turf wicket, butrubbers should be taken as well as thespikes to other schools where turf maynot be available.Hats are essential and must be either awide brim type in white, or a navy TSSPeak cap or preferably, the navy TSS‘Baggy’ cap. Both hats are available fromthe TSS uniform shop. Sunglasses arerecommended for sun safety.Please be aware that students wearingincorrect uniform may be refused to play.All protective thigh pads and chest padsare to be worn under the whites. Allboys are encouraged to use their ownpersonal cricket gear. Team kits will besupplied, but boys without their own kitsshould at least have their own glovesand box.12


Selection Policy & AgeGroup CriteriaTeams are selected in conjunctionwith the Team Coach, Head SkillsCoach, <strong>Cricket</strong> Manager and Directorof <strong>Cricket</strong>. <strong>The</strong> selection is based ona player’s performance, attendanceat training and games, attitude (attraining as well as matches includinguniform), behaviour and team balance.<strong>The</strong> best possible team is selected forA teams and 1st XI each round.In lower grades endeavour is madeto ensure that players receiveopportunities to participate ina meaningful way. Players areencouraged to commit to playing theseason to ensure teams are maintained.Players who are irregular in attendancecannot expect games every round.Teams and venues for matches areposted on the TSS Sports Websiteand Sports Noticeboard every Fridayprior to the weekend match. It is theresponsibility of all players to notifycoaches of their unavailability nolater than the Wednesday afternoontraining session preceding Saturday’smatch. Players must attend trainingeach week.<strong>The</strong> team coach determines battingand bowling order, not the captain.Year level now determines thegrouping of all players, however, theselection panel can reserve the rightto play selected cricketers in higherage groups should it be in the bestinterests of the cricketer.CRICKET13

GPS Rules of CompetitionSECTION A: CODE OF BEHAVIOUR –MATCH DAYAdapted from ‘Fair Play in <strong>School</strong> Sport– Code of Behaviour’: Australian <strong>School</strong>sSports Council.Players, coaches, parents, spectators andofficials are encouraged to familiarisethemselves with the GPS Codes ofBehaviour that apply to all GPS activities.PLAYERS1. Play by the rules.2. Cooperate with and respect gameofficials and their decisions.3. Abstain from verbal abuse,distraction, or provoking of officialsor other players – see section onSledging on next page.4. Treat all players as you would like tobe treated and respect the propertyof others.5. Leave the field immediately andwithout dissent, when given out.6. As an incoming batsman, pass thedismissed player on the field ofplay and go directly to your battingposition without conversation.7. Remain off the pitch area prior tothe match and avoid damage to theplaying area during the match.8. Abstain from excessiveencouragement of bowlers / teammatesbetween deliveries.9. When batting, be ready to bat whenthe bowler is at his mark, and, whenbowling, complete your over withoutdelay.COACHES1. Set a good example for all players.2. Encourage and create opportunitiesto develop individual and team skills.3. Ensure your players are friendlytowards officials and opponents.4. Remove from the field of play, anyof your players whose behaviour isunacceptable.PARENTS AND SPECTATORS1. Provide a model of good behaviourfor all players.2. Demonstrate courtesy towardsall players, all officials, and allspectators.3. Encourage honest effort, skilledperformance, and team loyalty.4. Let game officials conduct the matchwithout interference yet be willing toprovide assistance if requested.ADMINISTRATORS AND OFFICIALS1. Ensure the equipment and conditionsare safe for the skill level of the boysinvolved.2. Ensure everyone involved, includingparents, understands theirresponsibilities regarding fair playand appropriate behaviour.3. Officiate without bias, emphasiseskill and enjoyment, encourage bothteams, and set a good example.4. Be consistent, courteous, and helpfultowards all participants.5. Ensure that the ‘spirit of the game’ isnot lost by overcalling violations.6. Ensure that coaches and officialsprovide adequate supervision of theplayers.16


CRICKETSLEDGING<strong>The</strong> Headmasters of GPS schools havedetermined that ‘sledging’ has no placein GPS cricket. This practice is forbidden.<strong>The</strong> Headmasters have directed thatplayers:a) are to make no derogatory commentsat an opposing player;b) are to make no derogatory commentsabout an opposing player, andc) are to make no comments or noisesat critical times during the game – eg.when a batsman is about to face aball or when a bowler is running in tobowl.Players who breach these directions willface the following consequences:a) they will be issued with a yellow cardas a warning for a first offence in amatch;b) they will be sent from the field of playfor a second offence in a match;c) if sent off, they will not be replacedfor the remainder of the game;d) when a player is sent off, he will suffera further penalty of missing the nextgame in which he would otherwisehave played.Health and SafetyClearly, TSS <strong>Cricket</strong> endeavours toconduct appropriate activities andprovide safe facilities and equipment toall TSS cricketers. <strong>The</strong>re are a couple ofkey issues that do need emphasising tominimise the risk of injury in training andplaying cricket at the <strong>School</strong>.HELMETS/ PROTECTORSUnder <strong>School</strong> Workplace Health andSafety requirements, it is compulsorythat batters, close in fielders andwicketkeepers standing up to thewickets must wear a helmet with a faceguard and groin protector in practiceand games when a hard ball is used.All players are encouraged to purchasetheir own helmet and protector or usethose provided by the <strong>School</strong> and haveit correctly fitted.NET PRACTICEUnder <strong>School</strong> Workplace Health andSafety requirements it is compulsorythat, when training in net facilities, thefollowing rules be followed to minimiserisk of injury:1. If no coach present, or nets arechained, nets are not to be used.2. Full protective gear (Incl Helmet/Protector) to be worn when using ahard ball.3. Wear closed-in shoes but not spikes.4. No other people in net other thanbatsman and bowler.5. Only one person at batters end.6. Keep playing surface clean.7. Always keep eye on action in nets.17
