27 April 20<strong>10</strong>Dear Parents of <strong>Year</strong> <strong>10</strong> Students,After the postponement of the <strong>Year</strong> <strong>10</strong> Outdoor Education <strong>camp</strong> due to wet weather, ithas been re-scheduled the weekend of 21-24 May. <strong>The</strong> <strong>camp</strong> is based from the <strong>School</strong>'s<strong>Hidden</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> Outdoor Education Centre near Tyalgum, N.S.W. and will follow the <strong>form</strong>atof the original <strong>camp</strong>.<strong>The</strong> aims of the <strong>camp</strong> are to encourage personal and social development; develop soundecological attitudes; further develop skills in outdoor activities; and to enrich otheracademic disciplines.<strong>The</strong> boys will receive instruction in map and compass skills, menus and cooking, firstaid, minimal impact bushwalking and orienteering, as well as the high and low ropescourse (including flying fox), rockclimbing/abseiling, canoeing and leadership activities.<strong>The</strong> <strong>camp</strong> is an ‘expedition’ <strong>camp</strong> in which the students will journey between several<strong>camp</strong>sites by bushwalking; a mountain bike ride; and a flat-water or low grade whitewatercanoe trip down one of the rivers or dams in the area. <strong>The</strong> <strong>camp</strong>sites are in anational park, a local landowner’s property and <strong>Hidden</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> OEC.<strong>The</strong>y will travel through a variety of environments, often with outstanding views of theTweed Valley.To enable us to offer such learning experiences to 160 students while ensuring correctstaff-student safety ratios and causing minimal disruption to our academic program,each group of students as outlined below will begin the expedition at a different locationand travel through the activities in a different order.Students work in groups of approximately 36 for each programme schedule, but willwork in groups of 6 for expedition organisation. Those groups of 6 are to be organisedwithin their House groups as the core.All groups will depart on Friday 21 st May at 8.15 am and return by 3.30 pm onMonday 24 th May. Depart and return point is the school bus area.<strong>The</strong> groupings and order of activities is:Group A Biddle, Kaiser, Radcliffe Bushwalk, bike, canoeing, <strong>Hidden</strong> CkGroup B Atkinson, Maughan, McKinley Bike, canoeing, <strong>Hidden</strong> Ck, bushwalkGroup C Delpratt, Surman, Tuurnock, Canoeing, <strong>Hidden</strong> Ck, bushwalk, bikingGroup D Melbourne, Thorold, Walker <strong>Hidden</strong> <strong>Creek</strong>, bushwalk, bike, canoeing


Please bring a cut lunch for the first day.As a result of the <strong>camp</strong> there will be NO <strong>Year</strong> Ten classes at <strong>The</strong> <strong>Southport</strong> <strong>School</strong> onFriday 21 st May or Monday 24 th May 20<strong>10</strong>. <strong>The</strong> House cross-country event is on Tuesday25 th May and the students are expected to participate.Further details will be explained to students in a meeting at school next week. Anequipment list, permission <strong>form</strong> and medical update <strong>form</strong> are attached. Please returnthe signed permission <strong>form</strong> and medical <strong>form</strong> no later than Monday <strong>10</strong> th May via yourson’s roll call teacher at roll call period, via Student Services, or directly to me at theschool by email, mail or fax if that is more convenient. Unfortunately, we do require anew <strong>form</strong> as they are date specific and there may be changes in the medical situation forsome students.I will contact the parents of students who record a significant medical issue or dietaryrequirement that may need further clarification of management or involvement inactivities.Exemption from the <strong>camp</strong> has to be approved by your son’s Housemaster and theDeputy Headmaster and such exemption may require an agreed alternative programmeto be utilized.Students participating in their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award may use this <strong>camp</strong> for anexpedition for their award. Students interested in starting their “DoE” Award shouldregister in the programme before the <strong>camp</strong> if they wish to use it for their award.
