Technical BulletinMaxon BurnerFlame Rod & Spark Igniter PositioningWarning: Make sure the electrical power is turned off, gas is turned off and theunit is locked out before working on the equipment.Correct installation of the fl ame rod and igniter arenecessary for reliable lighting of the APX burner. This photo shows the fl ame rod and igniter on theright side of the APX burner Pilot end plate. TheQuartz tubes are inside the plate by about 1/8”.If you are replacing existing fl ame rod or ignitermark the old quartz tube or measure from the endof the quartz to burner plug door and install thenew items to the same measurement. At equipment start up of during a maintenancePM the fl ame rod and igniter can be seen from thebefore catalyst area, look above the air defl ectorplates to the right side. With the air defl ectorplates removed you will be able to access thefl ame rod and igniter. Insert the fl ame rod andigniter (igniter is closest to the burner face) throughthe knurled nut making sue the O-ring is in place, push igniter and fl ame rod in far enough that thequartz is exposed. Leave the knurled nuts loose fornow. From inside the oxidizer push the fl ame rodand igniter outward so that the quartz is inside thetube about 1/8”.After adjustments are made and the fl ame rod and igniter are correctly settighten the locking nuts making sure the O-rings are installed. Measure from theburner plug surface to the end of the quartz tubes and record this measurementon the plug door surface and on data sheets for future replacement settings.Another method of setting the fl ame rod and igniter is to use a wire with a1/4” 90 degree bend on the end and sliding it through the fl ame rod tube andhooking it inside the pilot end plate.1

Technical BulletinMaxon BurnerFlame Rod & Spark Igniter PositioningMark the wire from the outside of the burner at the knurled nuts. Remove the wirefrom the tube and hook the bend on the inside end of the quartz tube of the fl amerod and igniter and transfer the mark to the fl ame rod and igniter. Set the fl amerod and igniter out 1/8” to 1/4” from this mark. Measure from the outside end ofthe quartz tube to the burner plug and record distance on the burner plug doorand data sheets. For further information, availability, please contact your nearest MEGTEC offi ce by visitingwww.megtec.com and click on parts and upgrades or email to info@megtec.com.TCB-023-09212007_Maxon Burner Flame Rod & Spark Igniter Positioning2
