It‘s always exciting for students and teachers to close another school year. I always personally miss the bustle of the school day, observing the daily educational process, andthe many extra-curricular activities that often bring so much joy to us all. This school year has been exceptional for the Ruston High Bearcats. Beginning in the fall we got the news of RHS having the highest ACT average score ever, 21.7, whichone of the highest in the state for non-magnet high schools. We also began the process of the implementation of our New Tech component of Ruston High — New Tech @ Ruston. Our school performance score came out in October and we were glad to see that RHS once again had one of the highest in the state of Louisiana for non-magnet public highschools. Our spring testing this year is evidence of continued growth for our school. Many other successes throughout the year are evidence of a vibrant, exciting, educationalinstitution that continues to grow in stature.I hope that each student and faculty/staff member has a rejuvenating summer and returns to school with renewed enthusiasm for the 2011-12 school year.GraduationPicturesPage 2Senior StaffFarewellsPages 24-26http://rustonhigh.lincolnschools.org/chatterbox.htmlhatterboxRuston High School SPECIAL SENIOR EDITION June 2, 2011Box Tops Graduation/Honors (2-3) Scholarships (4) Graduates (4-13) Senior Ads (13) Academic/Clubs (14) Lincoln Achieve (15) Clubs (16-17) Arts/Rally (18-19) Bearcat Victory MountainGraphic (20) Community Service (21-22) Student Center (23) Senior StaffFarewells (24-26) Sponsors/Staff (27) Sports (28-31) Bearcat Spirit (32)Ruston High School Graduation - Bearcat Styleby Whitney DurrettIncoming Editor in ChiefOn May 24, 2011 Ruston High Schoolheld their 2011 graduation ceremony. She then went through interviews and built aportfolio to compete against other school‘s elected Students of the Year at the parish level. Once again Kate was awarded for heroutstanding career as a student and was named Lincoln Parish Student of the Year. Next was the regional level and Kate Warner, much to her surprise, again claimed the title of Regional Student of the Year. Kate is definitely deserving of and has worked hardfor these honors. To qualify to be considered as Student of the Year, a student must have a 3.5 GPA or higher. When being considered, judgeslook at the student‘s ACT scores, their records, their contributions to the school and community, and letters of recommendation. The judges use a reverse point system. This means that in order to win the student must have the least amount of points. The studentchosen for this recognition is one who has proven that they know what it takes to work hard to be successful.Ruston’s National Merit Scholarsby Natasha AlvaNews EditorIn the last four years, six students from Ruston High School have been named Nationals Merit Scholars.Make that eight now as two have been added to the list from Ruston High School: Elizabeth Sawyer and ValerieWheat. In the end, eight thousand, four hundred students were named NationalMerit Scholars and were rewarded scholarships. Congratulations to both Elizabeth and Valerie for their selectionas National Merit Scholars and for representing the Bearcat nation!Elizabeth SawyerValerie Wheat

SFarewell Ruston Highby Christian AmosSports Editortaff FarewellChatterboxRuston High School June 2, 2011 Page 24It’s Been an Honorby Gray TaylorGraphics/Design EditorWhen I graduated from Ruston High I also had to say good-bye to a specific job that I sincerely love. For the past two years Ihave had the honor to report on the district, regional, state, and even national champions of Ruston High School as Sports Editor.Being an editor for the RHS Chatterbox has allowed me to expand my journalistic limits and the development of my personal slogan,―the voice of RHS athletics‖, began. As I recount the wins and losses I have reported on for the past two years, the one win that I can recall is the 2009 girls‘ crosscountrystate champ team that blew the competition out of the water at every meet. Wins such as that not only fuel me as a journalist, but as a Bearcat, I am proud to be among some of the best high school athletes. It is my hope that the player of the month serieswill continue to highlight these intense athletes and their skills. As a junior on the staff, I went from the title of sports reporter to the sports editor during the first publication of 2009 after I washanded the responsibility of reporting on all sporting events related to RHS. The transition was made with no regrets. One thing Chatterbox has taught me that no core subject class could ever teach me is that working with others requires most thatjust collaboration; it demands communication, consideration, and coordination. I have to thank three special people for making meand the sports section look good each month. Natasha Alva, News Editor, proofread many parts of the section, photographed manyevents for the section, and occasionally reported on soccer games. Thank you Natasha, your work did not go unnoticed. Sports reporterKeeKee Williams went beyond her reporting duties at times by assisting me and other staff with tasks to meet deadlines. ReedMalek (2011-2012 Sports Editor) has lead by example in his writing and has proven that he is qualified to report on athletic events.Lastly, I would like to thank my Chatterbox/FBLA adviser, Mr. Lloyd Bruner. He has done what many teachers and sponsorshave not; he has allowed me to think outside the box (no pun intended) and into a space where my creativity has grown. It is alwaysgreat to see yourself grow over time, but it is even more amazing when people you consider your family grows also. The Chatterboxstaff is filled with diverse characters and each has their own strengths, but together for each publication these 18 staff members accomplishthe objective set from the start, to be ―the voice of Ruston High‖Four years has never felt so short. In a nutshell, my freshman year was okay, sophomore year was crud, junior year was great, and senior year has been incredible.Ruston High School is definitely the best high school a person could attend, and I‘m going to miss it. I have met some of the bestpeople I will ever know, and I hope to stay in touch with them as our lives go on.Working for the Chatterbox has been a privilege as well as a great experience. It feels good knowing I have made the entireschool laugh with my cartoons, and whoever replaces me next year has some big shoes to fill. I have accomplished a lot in fouryears, but it seems that a lot is never enough. To everyone at Ruston High, I say ‗thank you.‘ It has been an honor serving with you all.Chatterbox is aproud memberof theChatterbox staffare proudmembers ofChatterbox Staff: 2010-2011

Staff FarewellChatterboxRuston High School June 2, 2011 Page 25The Journey Continuesby Natasha AlvaNews EditorMy junior year I started as a reporter doing whatever I was told to do. My senior year I becamethe news editor and told other people what to do. Now I‘m graduated and trying to figure outwhat to do. Despite, I know that when I get old like Mr. Bruner (hehe) and look back on my life, Iwill never regret being part of the Chatterbox staff.Being your news editor has been a great experience and honor. I have had fun working witheach member of our staff. Well, all of the staff except Amber who never did any work (loveyou!). We have had our struggles to meet deadlines, overcome procrastination, and such, but inthe end we have always come out with a great paper. It is an amazing feeling to see the final productof your hard work. It is a feeling that each member of the staff feels when we hand out thoseChatterboxes each month.I would like to thank all of those who help make this paper a success. First, our sponsor and theman who cracks the whip –Mr. Bruner. Thank you for believing in us and spending all of thoseextra hours making sure that the paper was ship shape. Next, all of the staff especially LaurenTownsend; you were a great assistant editor and I would have drowned in my swamp of workwithout you. Thank you and good luck next year! I would also like to thank all of the teacherswho have let us interrupt their classes, given us information and pictures, or written articles. Finally,I would like to thank the students. We write the paper to tell the school about you and yourachievements. Keep up the great work and keep reading!A Good Bye Tear!!!by Stephany ArisSenior ReporterIt is hard to realize that the four years we have spent together at Ruston High School are finally over. For many students, graduating is the best thing that has ever had happened to them. At graduation, we smiled and cried and enjoyed ourmoment in the sun. If it hasn‘t hit all of the seniors yet, I am sure it soon will - we will now get a chance to face life outsideof our own little world, and we will get to see how hard the outside world can be.However, we know that we have the knowledge, skills, and character to face the world as we start college, begin ourcareers, or serve our country in the armed forces. We know this because of all the time and dedication that all of the teachersat Ruston High School have given us. Each senior should be grateful and thank the teachers for caring and for helpingus be who we are today. Many of our teachers not only taught us the required materials, they served as our counselors, ourmentors, our friends, and in some instances, as our parents.I know it wasn‘t easy for everyone, and in some instances it seemed impossible, but we made it. Now that we havegraduated, we each face our own new start. I feel blessed that no matter how hard the world may be or how many obstaclesare thrown in my way, I have the right tools for success. In my obvious bias, I am proud to be a member of ―The PerfectClass‖, the class of 2011. Though we leave many friends and our school behind in some ways, our memories of our timeand friends at Ruston High School will never fade. We won‘t forget the people that were there to help us when we neededsomeone most; we will forever talk about the teachers that made us mad or for reasons unknown we did not like; we willcherish forever the teachers that believed in us and motivated us to work hard to find our dreams. This is not a good-bye, but rather a ―see you around‖. Remember forever, class of 2011, ―WE ARE BEARCATS‖.Once a Bearcat - Always a Bearcat! Good Luck!!!

STempus Fugit (Time Flies)by Amber BrownOutgoing Senior Editortaff FarewellChatterboxRuston High School June 2, 2011 Page 26Just as Logan Taylor passed down his reigns as Senior Editor to me at the end of the 2009-2010 school year, it is now time for me to do thehonor of giving up my title to Whitney Durrett as ―Editor in Chief‖.I came into Chatterbox my junior year, when Mr. Bruner became the adviser and asked me to join after explaining exactly what it was heexpected. For my first year, I was just a Reporter/Photographer, which is the same thing that Whitney was this year. As the year progressed, Ibegan to care more and more about the newspaper, and Mr. Bruner could tell that I was one of the few who actually did care and put time andeffort into my work. Besides being intensely involved in FBLA, Chatterbox was my only other real concern, and seeing as I live at the MethodistChildren‘s Home, I had no life and was able to do anything that I was needed to do. Even though that is only one of the reasons that Mr.Bruner chose me as the newspaper‘s Senior Editor, I am thankful for everything that he has done for me.The time has come to pass on my baton to Whitney, and I wish her all of the luck in the world. She has become like a little sister to me overthe past year, and I will miss her so much! Hopefully she will do all that she can to make next year Mr. Bruner‘s best year ever! Oh, and Mr.Bruner, please don‘t have a heart attack or flip out on your new class, at least not until past mid-term. Just breathe, both you and Whitney! And Ipromise that I will come by and visit you guys.To Ruston High School, this has been the best high school that I have attended, seeing as I came to RHS at the beginning of my sophomoreyear. I have had some great influences from this school, teachers and students, and would like to thank them all. As my Latin title states ―TimeFlies.‖ Just know that it really does and ensure that you enjoy every moment of every day.P.S. I don‘t hate my life!Partnership With Business Champions– Partners in Chatterbox SuccessA New Beginningby Whitney DurrettIncoming Editor in ChiefI feel privileged to have the honor to become the first editor of the Chatterbox as a junior. I know I will never be able to fill the shoes ofthe 2011 editor, Amber Brown. When she began training me, I was surprised at what all hard work and many hours actually go into creating awonderful school newspaper. Without the work of Amber, I wouldn‘t have a great foundation to work with. I am so excited to become thenew Editor in Chief of the Chatterbox! As I got to know Amber and the other seniors, I realized how dedicated and passionate they were about the Chatterbox. I never thought Iwould be in their shoes as a junior. Coming into Chatterbox in the first class of sophomores able to join, I didn‘t think I would find myself tobe so involved and dedicated to the program.Without the help of Amber, Christian, Natasha, Gray, and Stephany, I would not be able to be the Editor in Chief and have the motivationto make Ruston High School‘s Chatterbox newspaper the best it‘s ever been. Thank you seniors for being such a good influence and for pushingme to be the best I can be! I will do my very best to make you proud! I will not let you down and I will not forget you!
