The Arts/ Rally<strong>Chatterbox</strong><strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2, <strong>2011</strong> Page 19District and State Literary Rallyby Benicia KingEducation ReporterAt the District Literary Rally, <strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> students again took home the SweepstakesAward. <strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> has won the Sweepstakes Award at district for so long now that no one atour school can remember far enough back to when we didn‘t. That‘s many years back considering howlong some of our distinguished Alumni have been teaching at <strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. 1st place finishes atDistrict Literary Rally included Journalism I: Amber Brown; World Geography: Ben Serio; EnvironmentalScience: Casey Johnston; Chemistry: Clark Pierce; Nutrition and Food: Dara Smith;French I: Darby Guinn; Accounting: Heather Strawbridge; English Literature: Holly Grigsby;Spelling 10: Jake Kyte; AGI: Jonathan Craig; Family and Consumer Science: Kaitlyn Heiden; AlgebraII: Kari Hackbarth; AGII: Layton Richard; Algebra I: Mary Margaret Manning; Health: MattOakes; Principles of Business: Natasha Alva; Psychology: Nathan Bennett; Computer Science I:Phillip Alva; Spanish III: Rachel Hill; Spelling 11: Reed Malek; French II: Shelby Giddings; andIntroduction to Business Computer Applications: Victoria Wheat.<strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong> took it to the next level at the State Literary Rally as well. The highest honor achievedfrom a <strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> student was earned by Heather Strawbridge as she not only captured 1stplace at state in Accounting, she took the Overall title as well. Also representing <strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>with a 1st place finish was Zach Hannibal in AG III. <strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> also had five students place3rd in their events: Jonathan Craig in AG I; Darby Guinn in French I; John Herren in Spanish I; CaseyJohnston in Environmental Science; and Natasha Alva in Principles of Business.Heather StrawbridgeState Champion - AccountingOverall WinnerArts Students Paint a Perfect Yearby Brittany GonzalesAsst. News EditorZach HannibalState Champion - AG IIIThroughout the year Art has painted itself into recognition at <strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong> through community service and competition. Many students in art have won various awards. PetrosArias won in the Painting category and will be an intern for 2-3 weeks in NYC for Steven Duarte from Asmara Eritrea. Michael Palmer won Best of Show for his art display atGSU. Micheal Palmer also won 2 nd place for his Kiwanis pottery. Another participant in the GSU art competition was Reed Durham and he was awarded an honorable mention.The last senior to have an award in art is Mayisha Nakib and she went to NASA for her art. Art has done many things for <strong>Ruston</strong> <strong>High</strong>. The Art classes have painted the bearcatpaws and participated in face painting. Of course, everyone knows the beautifully articulate Art display case by the front office and pictured below! The art display case proudlyshows the Art class‘s hard-work over the year and their talent. These outstanding students have accomplished a lot and we hope they will accomplish more! Thanks seniors forall the dedication you have done for Art. Keep up the good work!
