10.1 Visa requirementsIf you are from neither an EU state nor from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland, you mustobtain a student visa before coming to the UK. Failure to do so means you may be refused entry to the UKon arrival.You can apply for your visa three months before your course start date. You should apply for your visa assoon as possible after your place at <strong>Somerville</strong> has been confirmed. Your department or faculty will ask youto provide some passport information and once you have met all conditions <strong>of</strong> your <strong>Oxford</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer, yourdepartment or faculty will request a Confirmation <strong>of</strong> Acceptance to Study (CAS) number from the UKBorder Agency, which will be sent to you, via email, in due course.Your Confirmation <strong>of</strong> Acceptance to study number will be sent to the email address on your original<strong>University</strong> application form, unless you have since notified your department or faculty <strong>of</strong> a differentaddress.You will need the CAS number when you apply for your Study Visa.Information on visas is on the <strong>University</strong>'s Web site at http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/io/.You must make sure you obtain a student visa rather than a visitor or student visitor visa, and try to ensurethe visa is issued for the duration <strong>of</strong> your studies, as it is expensive to extend a student visa in the UK.You should check straight away that you have been given the appropriate time limit on your visa.It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a valid visa at all times during your stay in the UK. You riskbeing deported from the country if you do not have a valid visa.10.2 Scanning passports and identity cardsIf you need a visa to enter the UK, <strong>Somerville</strong> is required by the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) andthe <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oxford</strong> to scan, and retain images <strong>of</strong>, certain parts <strong>of</strong> your passport and, if you have one,your biometric identity card. This is to enable us to comply with UK immigration regulations.We will need to scan the page <strong>of</strong> your passport which bears your passport photo, the visa page <strong>of</strong> yourpassport and, if you have a biometric identity card, the front and back <strong>of</strong> that card.Images <strong>of</strong> these documents will be held securely on our <strong>College</strong> computer server, with access to the imageslimited to members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong>'s Academic Office (who <strong>work</strong> with student data and records) and the<strong>College</strong>'s IT (information technology) department.Your passport and identity card information will be released, on request, only to representatives <strong>of</strong> theUnited Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) and to authorised colleagues in the <strong>University</strong>'s central StudentAdministration section, in order to comply with immigration regulations.Details are given below, in the "Arrival" section, about when your document(s) will be scanned.10.3 Meet and Greet service, and Orientation ProgrammeThe <strong>University</strong> will be running a Meet and Greet service for International students arriving in the UK, viaHeathrow Airport from Saturday 28 th September to Sunday 3 rd October 2013 and you can find moreinformation about this at: http://www.ox.ac.uk/students/new/meet/The <strong>University</strong> Orientation Programme for Graduates will take place on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4 thOctober 2013 to help you learn about life here.
