For Katz, he believes the Street of Dreams program is one he would have benefited from when he was still in school. As a dental student, Katz wanted to be an oral surgeon and decided to visit an oral surgeon’s office every Saturday. He then decided he wanted to be a periodontist and visited a local periodontist’s office. After all three dental office visits, the students returned to the Greater Cleveland Dental Society office for pizza. Participating dentists joined the students for dinner and a question and answer session, as did Greater Cleveland Dental Society Executive Director, Carla Alderdice, and Dr. John Grady a retired ODA member. Upon reflection of the day’s events, Payne said she believes the program was not only fun and advantageous for students, but also for the participating dentists. When asked if he would participate in the program again Katz said, “Absolutely and it was fun.” The ODA's Street of Dreams event has been nationally recognized by the American Dental Association and has served as a prototype for similar events held by dental associations throughout the country including Minnesota, New York and New Jersey. DENTISTRY IN THE FUTURE – IT’S THE JOURNEY continued from page 11 Both the REAL and the DMD/MD programs are part of a wave of change occurring in dental education. I believe it is important that many approaches be tried so that we can learn from and adopt the best practices. But it is also important to recognize that dental schools alone can’t determine the future of the profession. Students derive their values, knowledge, and goals from what they see the American Dental Association (ADA) do, from their colleagues and associates, from the practicing community, and from what they see in magazines and movies, as much as from what they learn in the classroom and clinic. That’s why I say that rethinking the future of the profession is as important as rethinking the curriculum. That’s the journey we must all make, whether it be dental schools, the ADA, the licensing community, or individual dentists. On a personal note, I want to thank Dr. Richard Vogel and the staff of Global Health Nexus for the opportunity to share my views on the challenges and opportunities dental education faces in preparing students to become 21st century healthcare providers. I think that in making the decision to invite outside opinions, the NYU College of Dentistry has introduced a welcome innovation in dental school publications. 23
