2013 IESL NSW Gala DinnerThis year’s Gala Dinner was held on 1 st of June. Itwas attended by 300 people including the SriLankan Counsul General Ambassador BandulaJayasekera, President of IESL Eng Tilak De Silva andthe National President of Engineers Australia DrMarlene Kanga. The Gala Dinner was opened bylighting the traditional Sri Lankan lamp by the aboveguests, Chair of IESL NSW and the gold sponsor.The Chair of the IESL NSW Chapter Eng Kamal Fernandowelcoming the attendees explained the objectives of the2013 IESL NSW Convention. He explained that theEngineering Conference is a showcase of our excellenceand our contribution to NSW and the Gala Dinner is thetime for celebration.Ambassador Bandula Jayasekera pointed out therelevancy of the convention’s theme; “BridgingColombo and Sydney”. He also made a commitmentfor promoting increased participation of Engineersfrom Sri Lankan diaspora in the development projectsin Sri Lanka.IESL President Eng Tilak De Silva talked about theimprovements at IESL; membership management,head office building, financial management and website. Tilak also provided a progress report on theinitiatives for a legal framework for setting standardsfor practicing engineers - currently awaiting Cabinetapproval and improving engineering educationstandards. He also stated that some delegationpowers for membership functions will be transferred to Provincial Chapters to reduce travel/ inconvenience for members.
The Keynote speech at the Gala Dinner wasdelivered by the National President ofEngineers Australia Dr Marlene Kanga. DrKanga talked about the important role ofengineers and engineering in Asian Century.She explained why the engineers with linksto Asia especially those who were born therehave a major role in developing Australia’sstrategy for greater engagement with Asia.Dr Kanga also offered Engineers Australia’sassistance for Sri Lankan Universities to obtain the full membership of Washington Accord.IESL NSW secretary Eng Waruna Kaluarachchidelivering the vote of thanks acknowledged thegenerous support of the sponsors NSW PublicWorks (gold), Fulton Hogan (Silver) and Bronzesponsors Sydney Catchment Authority, SMEC,Dulux and Aquatec-Maxcon.2013 IESL NSW Engineers Excellence Awards were also presented at the Gala Dinner by thePresident of IESL, National President of Engineers Australia and Chair of IESL NSW.After a Sri Lankan spicy dinner, theattendees were entertained by Drum Beatswith an African drum play. Then the floorwas open for the engineers and the spousesto dance to the vibrating rhythm of Fusive.The Master of Ceremonies DukeRamachandran kept the spirit of the Gala Niteright at the top.
