Context – the aesthetics and overall look of the area need to beconsidered when choosing the ashtray.d. Signage - the type of sign / instructions for use, its visibility and messageshould be considered.ENCAMS research 97 shows that the overall preference for permanent ashtrays was fordedicated, freestanding ashtrays, with the following features:• Large enough to hold a high volume of cigarette butts;• Easy and clean to use with large holes; and• Displayed clear signage.Additional information that may be valuable, would be to understand the suitability ofashtrays in certain contexts, as we know that the littering behaviour of smokers changesaccording to their surroundings.A listing of suppliers is in Table 6. Few suppliers provide ‘No Littering’ signs – they are morelikely to provide ‘No Smoking’ signs.
