Grace Fest- Celebrating the Year of GraceAs a school we have been invited to send students to the Grace Fest Mass at StPatrick’s Cathedral on Wednesday 15 th August. Aside from this Mass, there are arange of events that will occur throughout the week that students, family, friendsare invited to attend. Some of the highlights:• The Voice contestant, Fatai Veamatahau, singing prior to the openingMass on 15 th August• Workshop day Saturday 18 th August (including sessions run by St Vincent De Paul Society, filmmaker Khoa Do, Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez sdb, Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, Fr Robert Galea)• “Loves Body” photographic exhibition and “Christ in Iconography” self -guided exhibit. Both exhibitionsare at All Saints Catholic Church,174 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. The All Saints Fitzroy Parish is wellknown by a number of our students and just a short walk from the Academy.The full program is available for download at:http://www.cam.org.au/evangelisation/Year-Of-Grace.aspxAlternatively I have some programs available for students who wish to collect one.Catholic Youth Festival AmbassadorsWe congratulate the following students who have been accepted as our Ambassadors for the NationalCatholic Youth Festival that will occur in December 2013:Abby Dionysiou Yr 8, Madeline Rendina Yr 8, Tess Moody Yr 9, Mariana Ventura Koumides Yr 9, KimmieBerhanu Yr 10, Isabelle Danaher Yr 9, Lauren Crawford Yr 9, Emily Rienks Yr 10, Melinda Martinstyen Yr 10.It will be the biggest Catholic youth gathering since WYD Sydney 2008 and the Ambassadors will help planand promote the event over the next twelve months.Reflection DaysDue to circumstances beyond our control the Year 9 reflection day scheduled for August 14 th has beencancelled. Students will attend their normal classes on this day. We hope to reschedule this event later in theyear.Tuesday Morning MassAs always, we extend an invitation to family members to attend our 8am Tuesday morning Masses. This weekthere are Year level assemblies being held to introduce the girls to the issues and options that they need toconsider.All Years 10 and 11 girls will be interviewed by a senior teacher to discuss their proposed subject choices.All girls are required to submit their On Line Web Preferences by midnight Monday August 27. The girls arerequired to print a ‘receipt’ of their subject choices which must be signed by the student and by her parent orguardian.Subject Selection Parent Information EveningsOn August 16, the College will hold a Subject Selection Information for both Middle School and VCE studentsand parents. The night will comprise two sections. In the Dillon room, Mr Hyland will present information thatstudents and parents need to consider when preparing for subject selection. As well, in the E2 corridor of theE Building, the Home Economics room and the N21 Science Laboratory there will be subject displays for bothVCE and Middle School subjects. All Year 8 students and Year 10 students and their parents are required to attend the night. Students andparents from Year 9 and Year 11 are welcome to attend the night to take the opportunity to talk with teachersor to clarify issues that may be of concern.VCE Unit 3&4 Trial Exam Week This is advance notice that the VCE Units 3&4 trial exam week will be heldduring the September School holidays from Thursday Sept 27 to Wednesday October 3. All Year 12 studentsand Year 11 students studying a Units 3&4 subject are expected to attend for their particular subjectexaminations.Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). VCAL is an applied learning certificate that can either betaken together with a VCE certificate or as an alternative to a VCE certificate. As a learning pathway in Years11 & 12 it is designed for students who are looking at TAFE study or employment as post schooling options. Itis a very flexible certificate and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of a diversity of students. Parentsand their Years 10 or 11 daughters are invited to attend a VCAL Information evening on Wednesday August22 to discuss the fine detail of potential VCAL programs.PISA This week 22 girls from Years 9&10 sat the tests conducted by the Program for International StudentAssessment (PISA). PISA is an international test commissioned by the OECD. The results of the test have animpact on educational programs in countries all around the world. The Rudd/Gillard ‘educational revolution’was inspired by Australia’s results in the 2009 PISA test. In years to come when our students are studying thePISA tests as part of their university studies or when an Australian government once again looks torevolutionise education, you may recall those 22 Academy girls who made it all happen!Mr Mark Hyland, Director of Teaching and LearningYEAR 9 REPORTYear 9 Camp to AngleseaAfter a one and a half hour bus ride, the girls were keen totackle any challenge that came their way. The staff and I wereextremely impressed by the courage and enthusiasm that wasshown for each and every activity. Many of the girls were facedwith situations that took them out of their comfort zone, and totheir credit, they were able to step up to the plate and conquertheir fears.At no stage did the light showers of rain put a dampener ontheir attitudes and willingness to give the activities a red hotcrack. On numerous occasions the students were given theoption of opting out of the activities to go indoors due to a bit ofdrizzle; however they all couldn’t pass up an opportunity tomaster the high ropes course or hit a bullseye on the archeryboard!The talent show was filled with a variety of acts, including acomedy item from Yu Yu Liu and Sophie Middis that couldhave rivalled Hamish & Andy; an amazing solo performancefrom Isabelle Danaher; however the award for bestperformance went to Achol Akec, Elizabeth Wol, Agum Deng,Nada Ajak and Pauline Makenene for their performance, whichscored a perfect 10 from all three judges. The girls thendanced up a storm with music from the DJ (Mr Agneskis),where the awards for best dancer could have gone to the entire year level.Academy of Mary ImmaculateMercy Education Limited.
