Department of Education400 Maryland Avenue, SWWashington, DC 20202-5901Directory InformationThe law permits the district to designate certain personal information about students as “directoryinformation.” In accordance with board policy FL (LOCAL), the district defines “directory information”as information contained in an education record of a student that is not considered harmful or an invasionof privacy if disclosed. Accordingly, the district shall not consider a student’s address, phone number, ore-mail address to be “directory information” unless the student’s parent requests, in writing, that theinformation be released. The district has designated the following categories of information as “directoryinformation”; student name; photograph, date and place of birth; major field of study; degrees, honors,and awards received; dates of attendance; grade level; most recent educational institution attended;participation in officially recognized activities and sports; and weight and height of members of athleticteams. This “directory information” will be released to anyone who follows procedures for requesting it.However, release of a student’s directory information may be prevented by the parent or an eligiblestudent. This objection must be made in writing to the principal within ten school days of your child’sfirst day of instruction for this school year.Directory Information for <strong>School</strong>-Sponsored PurposesThe <strong>District</strong> will use “directory information”, as defined above, for school-sponsored purposes. Thisinformation will not be used for other purposes without the consent of the parent or eligible student,except as described above at Directory Information.Unless you object to the use of your child’s information for these limited purposes, the school will notneed to ask your permission each time the district wishes to use this information for the school-sponsoredpurposes listed above.Release of <strong>Student</strong> Information to Military Recruiters and Institutions of HigherEducationThe district is required by federal law to comply with a request by a military recruiter or an institution ofhigher education for students’ names, addresses, and telephone listings, unless parents have advised thedistrict not to release their child’s information without prior written consent. Contact your campusprincipal if you do not want the district to provide this information to military recruiters or institutions ofhigher education.- 10 -
