EDITORIAL
Francis Vérillaud
Deputy Director of Sciences Po
Director of International Affairs
Throughout the year, Sciences Po and the
International Affairs Division devote
considerable energy to creating new
academic partnerships around the world
and to strengthening the agreements
already in force. It is always difficult to
single out one initiative among so many
worthy programmes, but I would like to
highlight a new research group that is
emblematic of the Sciences Po approach.
The Oxford/Sciences Po Social
Sciences Research Group (OXPO) was
created in March by Sciences Po, the
departments of politics and international
relations and sociology of the University
of Oxford, and the Maison Française
d'Oxford. OXPO will help finance the
launching of joint research projects, and
both institutions will annually exchange
visiting doctoral and post-doctoral
students as well as academics, and will
organise a joint doctoral seminar.
This model of academic cooperation is
focused on the creation of transnational
teams of researchers at the highest levels,
backed up by the resources and prestige
of two leading universities. Moreover, it
builds on a longstanding relationship
between Oxford and Sciences Po and
replaces a previous vehicle for
cooperation. The combination of
prestigious intellectual networks,
multinational research teams and a
commitment over the long term will ensure
the success of this new venture.
Sciences Po se félicite de la création d'un
nouveau groupe de recherche, OXPO, qui
réunit l'Université d'Oxford, Sciences Po,
et la Maision française d'Oxford. Ce
partenariat financera des projets de
recherche conjoints et permettra des
échanges de chercheurs et d'étudiants
doctoraux et post-doctoraux. Il bénéficiera
des réseaux intellectuels des deux
prestigieuses institutions, d'équipes de
chercheurs multinationales, et de la
collaboration qui lie Oxford à Sciences Po
depuis longtemps.
OXPO builds on a long tradition of
cooperation between scholars from the
University of Oxford and Sciences Po,
and aims to expand the activities of the
European research group «European
Democracies», created in 2005, which
it replaces.
OXPO will help finance the
launching of research projects
coordinated jointly by Oxford and
Sciences Po researchers, and both
institutions will annually host visiting
doctoral and post-doctoral students as
well as academics from the other
institution. They will also organise a
joint doctoral seminar. Please see the
17 mars par Sciences Po, les
départements de politique et relations
internationales et de sociologie de
l’Université d’Oxford, et la Maison
développer la collaboration
académique entre les chercheurs et
professeurs de l’Université d’Oxford, de
Sciences Po et de la Maison Française,
en particulier dans le domaine des
OXPO sera le point de rencontre pour
les chercheurs en sciences sociales de
ces institutions, qui travaillent sur
l’analyse comparative de l’évolution des
chercheurs de l’Université d’Oxford et
de Sciences Po. Il aidera à financer le
démarrage de projets de recherches
coordonnés conjointement par des
chercheurs d’Oxford et de Sciences Po.
De plus, les deux institutions
accueilleront chaque année des
étudiants doctoraux et post-doctoraux
et des chercheurs de l’autre institution
sur des postes de visiting.
Sciences Po team impresses judges in Stockholm business case contest
Four students from the Nancy French-
German regional campus of Sciences
Po greatly impressed judges in the
Stockholm School of Economics (SSE)
business case competition held in
Sweden on March 5-7.
The SSE, a university with which
Sciences Po has strengthened its
partnership over the years, organised
the competition (based on the
Harvard business cases) to celebrate
its 100th anniversary. Twelve
prestigious schools from around the
world were invited.
The Sciences Po team, accompanied
by economics teacher Samuel
Ferey, worked for 24 hours to produce
a business plan for De Laval, a major
Swedish milk company.
The team didn’t make the final, but
greatly impressed selection panel
members, who couldn’t believe at first
that the students did not come from a
business school and yet had been able
to produce work of such quality.
Students chose to name their team
after Albert O. Hirschman, in honour
of the Jewish-German economist and
author of several influential books on
political economy and development
economics, who fought in the French
army in 1940 and was very active in
the fight against Nazism until the end
of the war.
Sciences Po academic advisor assists undergrad exchange students
Sciences Po has recruited an academic
advisor whose main role is to advise
international undergraduate exchange
students. Bruno Perreau (bruno.
perreau@sciences-po.fr), who took up
the position at the beginning of the
academic year, is currently an assistant
professor of political science and
gender studies at Sciences Po at the
undergraduate level, and is a former
member of the Institute for Advanced
Study at Princeton.
"There was a need for advising
students about their studies at Sciences
Po. Coming from universities all around
the world and from various disciplinary
backgrounds, students always have a
lot of questions about methodology at
Sciences Po, how they will be assessed,
how they can write a dissertation, or
prepare an oral presentation. This is the
kind of help I try to bring them,"
according to Bruno Perreau.
The academic advisor has three
main responsibilities. First, helping
international exchange students with
course selection and enrolment, course
requirements and validation, and
London School of Economics professor Michael Cox.
Arab world association Facebook group reaches 600 members
More than 600 people have now joined
the Facebook group of the Sciences
Po Association for the Arab world
(Sciences Po Monde Arabe or SPMA). The
association, which was founded in
2006 and has since carved out a
leading role among Science Po
student groups, defines itself as a
forum for reflection on the political,
economic, social and cultural issues
of the Arab world.
The SMPA has a core group of 15
active members from backgrounds as
diverse as is the Arab world today. The
president, Selim Ben Hassen, is
Tunisian and a lawyer, while other
members come from Morocco, Algeria,
France, Lebanon, Yemen and
Palestine. The common ground is a
credo: avoiding self-interested
positions and artificial attempts at
consensus, moving beyond the Israel/
Palestinian conflict while continuing
to discuss the topic, and ensuring
open debate on opposing viewpoints.
questions concerning teaching methods
at Sciences Po. Second, supporting
students who have difficulty adapting
to teaching and learning methods which
may be different from those in their
home country. This service is offered in
Bruno Perreau.
the form of tutorials. Third, helping to
inform partner universities of the
Sciences Po course offering for
undergraduate exchange students.
"More than 500 students have made
The result is an active schedule of
public debates featuring high-profile
personalities such as Hubert Vedrine,
Tahar Ben Jelloun, Robert Badinter, and
Moncef Marzouki, as well as reports and
papers focused on the region. Two
major meetings will take place this
spring, one on capital punishment and
Islamic law in the Arab world (featuring
Robert Badinter) and another on
Islamic feminism.
Fondée en 2006, l’association Sciences
Po pour le Monde Arabe (SPMA)
compte plus de 600 membres sur son
groupe Facebook et connaît aujourd’hui
un grand succès dans l’univers
associatif de Sciences Po (elle est la
première association à avoir été
reconnue cette année). La SMPA se
définit comme un cercle de réflexion sur
les enjeux politiques et économiques,
aussi bien que culturels et de société,
dans le monde arabe.
Les 15 membres actifs de la SPMA
appointments or emailed me over the
last couple of months! One key aspect
of my responsibilities is to provide them
with all kinds of information relevant
to their studies at Sciences Po but also,
and above all, to reassure them. Taking
care of each student is our commitment
to making studying at Sciences Po a
unique experience," according to Bruno.
Bruno Perreau (bruno.perreau@
sciences-po.fr) assure depuis octobre
le suivi pédagogique des étudiants
internationaux inscrits en échange en
deuxième année. Il est docteur en
sciences politiques et maître de
conférences en 1er cycle à Sciences Po.
Son rôle de conseiller académique
permet de recevoir les étudiants
internationaux pour toute question
relative à leur scolarité y compris le
choix de cours, la compatibilité des
programmes avec leur plan de mobilité,
et des questions sur les méthodes
d’enseignement à Sciences Po. Un
soutien méthodologique, sous forme de
tutorat, est également proposé aux
étudiants en difficulté.
représentent des points de vue
souvent divergents et des horizons
différents. Le trait d’union entre eux
est un seul credo : refuser le
clientélisme et les clubs consensuels ;
printemps.
School of the Political Arts to be created by Sciences Po Paris and
the Harvard University Graduate School of Design
Sciences Po is to create a School of
the Political Arts with the Harvard
University Graduate School of Design.
The new school aims to move beyond
traditional approaches to political
communication by focusing on graphic
representations, and should attract
students from political science and
from the arts. The inaugural class
should begin its studies in Fall 2010.
Sciences Po compte créer une école
des arts politiques en partenariat avec
la School of Design de Harvard
University.
New research agreement signed during presidential visit to Mexico
Sciences Po and the Colegio de México signed an advanced
scientific cooperation accord on March 9 th during a visit to
Mexico by French president Nicolas Sarkozy and with the
support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Colegio de Mexico, a public higher education and
research institution dedicated to the humanities and the
social sciences, has been a longstanding partner of Sciences
Po in student mobility and research initiatives.
Two visiting professor Chairs, one based at each partner
institution, will allow teachers and researchers from
Sciences Po and Colegio de Mexico to undertake residencies
in Paris and Mexico. CERI (Sciences Po) researcher David
Recondo, who is also vice president of the Sciences Po
Caribbean and Latin American Political Observatory
(OPALC), will be the first holder of the Mexican Chair for a
three-year term.
The agreement, signed by Colegio de Mexico president
Javier Garciadiego and Sciences Po deputy director Francis
Verillaud, includes two other priorities for action.
Firstly, a joint research fund will be established to allow
the academic communities of the two institutions to compete
for grants based on joint projects. The fund will be financed
in equal shares by the two partners.
Secondly, a series of conferences – French-Mexican Dialogues
– will incorporate external partners, such as the French
Embassy in Mexico and French and Mexican intellectuals
and practitioners, to address public affairs issues from a
global perspective.
Founded in 1940, the highly prestigious Colegio de
México offers two bachelors degrees, eight masters degrees
Sealing a new partnership (L-R): Valérie Pihet (Sciences Po), Bruno Latour (Sciences Po scientific director),
Moshen Mostafavi (dean, Graduate School of Design, Harvard University), and Antoine Picon (associate researcher
at the École nationale des Ponts et Chaussées and professor of architectural history at the Harvard Graduate
School of Design).
5
The signing ceremony for the Sciences Po-Colegio de Mexico agreement.
and eight Ph.D programms for 350 students. It has a faculty
of 180 and a university press.
