allowed for the later development of the works righteousness in the<br />

Cornelius Otto Jansen (October 28, 1585–May 6,<br />

1640) was the Roman Catholic bishop of Ypres and<br />

the father of the religious movement known as<br />

Jansenism.<br />

He actually set out to disprove the Protestant<br />

position and demonstrate that Roman Catholics<br />

were just as Biblically-focused as Luther and his<br />

followers. His major work, Augustinus, was<br />

finished just before he died. In it he presented the<br />

Bible’s and Saint Augustine’s soteriology, which to<br />

the Jesuit (Roman Catholic) watchdogs veered far<br />

too close to the Protestant position. <strong>The</strong>ir initial eight charges of heresy were<br />

reduced to five and in 1643 Pope Innocent X formally condemned them. As<br />

Jansenism continued to spread, the Jesuit resistance became increasingly violent<br />

and papal condemnation more broad. In 1713, Pope Clement XI condemned 101<br />

statements from their writings.<br />

<strong>The</strong> great French religious philosopher, mathematician and<br />

physicist, Blaise Pascal (1623 – 1662), was among the most famous<br />

and influential of Jansen’s followers.<br />
