WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN "INTERIM"
AND A ,"PERMANENT" ADVISER?
An. "interim" adviser is a faculty mem-
ber who is assigned to new students by the
Admissions office.The assignment is made
on the basis of the availability of the
facul ty member with as much considera tion
as possible given to the student's speci-
f ied program choice. A "permanent" advis-
er is the faculty member selected by the
student, with the faculty member's appro-
val and recorded on Form OR 302.
I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO SEE MY ADVISER.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
The first thing to do is call your ad-
viser and speak to him/her or the faculty
secretary and try to arrange a mutually
convenient appointment. If your adviser
does not keep the appointment, write him/
her a note and explain why it is you want
to see him/her. In your note, also remind
your adviser of your past efforts to set
up an appointment and ask him/her to call
you to discuss your questions over the
phone.
DO I NEED TO ACCEPT MY ADVISER'S ADVICE?
No, "advice" at Sangamon State is intend-
ed to be just what the word says: informed
opinion intended to help you and which you
can accept or reject. It seems to me that
a good relationship with your adviser
would be based upon a mutual search for
full information and in only a few cases
would there arise a question about your
accepting or fejecting your adviser's ad-
vice. Where you decide to reject the ad-
vice in such incidences, you incur a
greater burden in justifying his position
since your adviser's support for the ac-
tion may then be lacking.
HOW DO I GO ABOUT FINDING OUT WHAT ARE MY
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS?
The new edition of THE GUIDE TO SANGAMON
STATE UNIVERSITY is now available. It sum-
marizes the graduation requirements for
all students, whether undergraduate or
graduate and whether the student entered
SSU before or during the Fall 1971 Quarter
Many program committees are also now pre-
paring more detailed statements as to
their expectations for their students. Af-
ter consulting these sources of informa-
tion, get together with your ad3ser and
make sure that the two of you have the
same understanding of your requirements.
See More Unity
(SSU) - A general meeting of Sangamon - Sta te
University faculty, reacting to the uni-
versi ty admini strations attempted takeover
of several governance system program com-
mittees, has decided it needs to speak
with a more unified voice to the admini-
stration by selecting what is being tenta-
tively called a "faculty chairman." I
Proposed by Council on Academic Affairs
chairman Robert Crowley, the faculty lead-
er would be selected by and among the fa-
cul ty constituents' 18 member delegation
to the University Assembly:
Crowley told the assembled faculty in
some ways the assembly had not been meeting
the concerns of the thus far disorganized
faculty .
Forming an organization, Crowley said,
would help the governance system to- work
by being something of a faculty senate in
mi na ture.
While the faculty had shared its powers-
with students and membe~s of the community
the faculty had ignored its own tradition-
al roots, Crowley said.
"In a sense I'm kissing UFO (a general
faculty organization) goodbye," said Crow-
* ley.
No.one has yet been selected as
spokesman .
Repeatedly, a couple members of the faculty
steered the group towards closing
its meetings to a1 1 but faculty.
Robert A1 1 ison said the faculty was
dealing with power and referred to his previous
statements about the need for a faculty
union while Robert Jackson said the
RAWSON DOES IT RIGHT
Bill Rawson, news director at WMAY ra-
dio, has scored what I would consider to
be a "first" among news corps in the capi-
tal city. Rawson has taken the Human
Relations Commission to court over an in-
cident in which he was denied access to a
meetingasa newsman. Hewas told per-
sonal matters were being discussed, but la-
ter found out differently. It's about
time somebody showed the various commit-
tees and groups that people don't 1 i ke the
idea of closed door meetings. I expected
a letter from Bill, as I heard that he
was not too happy over what I said about
the news two weeks ago, but, unless some-
one points out to-me that I'm wrong,' 1'11
never know that, they're right. .
After 7 years with WCVS, 'Rich Bradkey
will leave his position as news director
to form the Illinois News Network with Ray
Phipps. Rich said the target date is May
1, and he will leave the station the 15th
of this month.
A note of apology is in store for WVEM.
A few weeks ago, I said that they didn't
know what to do from day to day, let alone
have a programing pattern. We1 1, this may
we1 1 have been true two or three months
ago, but not today. WVEM has finally found
its place, I think. The format is just
about right, and I hope they stick with it.
For those of you who don't know what it is,
listen to Dan Rion(1-6),.. . his music is.
representative of the whole station and
sounds good. ..
Kris Stevens, former WLS jock, is now
in Miami at WMYQ-FM as program director.
