If, however, by some condescending quirk
of fate, McGovern did politic his way into
the nominating it would be the biggest up-
set since the Dewey-Truman race if he ac-
tually defeated the incumbent Nixon. It
is not a1 together inconceivable, though.
If the Viet Cong Summer offensive, rumored
since February, does sufficient damage to
the shakey Saigon government, if the twin
ITT scandals and the twin FHA scandals give
the demos the political mileage they hope
to get from them, and if Nixon succeeds in
alienating enough of the labor camp with
Phase I1 and enough of the intellectuals
by just -being Nixon, then McGovern has a
chance. There is, however, about as much
chance of this happening as of Martha
Mitchell getting a permanent case of laryngitis.
The political scene statewide is almost
as disgusting. Dan Walker's commendable
upset of the Daley machine was off set by
the sickening fact that Hanrahan also upset
it. Walker also showed an acute knowledge
of the fuel that makes the political
machine run, spending nearly twice as much
on his campaign ($1 million) as Simon
did. While Simon used his television time
to discuss his positions in some depth,
Walker saturated the tube with spot .announcements.
Despite his hard fought
battle, Walker's victory was, nonetheless,
a shallow one, since it is doubtful that
he can make a similarly respectable showing
in his contest with Ogilvie. Newsweek
and the Stx Louis Post Dispatch both contributed=?
ker's upset to a great degree
to the cross-over vote of Republicans who
didn't want to see an Ogilvie-Simon race.
When those voters cross back over to the
Rep~blican~ticket in November, it will be
a brodinagian task for the ex-attorney
from Montgomery Wards to defeat the incumbent
Ogilvie.
So, barring any unforeseen events like
California sliding into the ocean, it looks
as if we can start preparing right now
for four more routine years with Nison and
Ogilvie. All in all, the next four years
would be a good time to take up a temporary
residence in Poland--permanently.
