V I ATMGENERATING RELIABLECOMMUNICATIONS AT SEANera Saturn Bm MK2Satellite maritime communications terminalCHANGING THE WAY WE COMMUNICATE

Complete ship to shore communicationsThe Saturn Bm provides a full range of digitalb-directional communication services for vesselsat sea, via Inmarsat, the global satellite system.Saturn Bm offers telephone, telex, fax and datacommunications. It also provides broadcast facilitiessuch as electronic chart corrections, differential GPSand distress signalling. The equipment provides LeaseGateWay service (CN17 and Bandwidth EfficientSatellite Transport (BEST) service) via 2nd generationsatellites, as an option.High-speed dataNera Saturn Bm handles high-speeddata communications at 56 kbps or64 kbps, making connection to LocalArea Networks (LANs) andtransmitting of real-time informationto and from the vessel a reality. This permits ship owners to monitorengine room performance and othercritical functions. High-speed servicesare particularly important for thetransmission or polling of large files, such as seismicdata, which would be impractical to transmit bystandard means. The high-speed data service maybe segmented into as many as 8 lower-rate channelsto serve multiple data, telephone and fax facilitieson board.Navigational facilities and safetyTelephone, telex and facsimileIn addition to the standard display telephone handset, there are five analogue ports for extra telephones andfax machines. Any of these DMTF ports may be utilizedto connect the ship’s automatic exchange (PABX) to thesatellite terminal. Telex facilitates 50 Baud serviceas an option.Encryption serviceThe Nera Saturn Bm Encryption service option providesa voice, fax and data at 9kbps capability.Data communicationsData communications at 9.6 kbps provides a low-speedservice for email, Internet access and other interactivedata transmissions. It is ideal for connecting to PCs,telemetry sensors and other data equipment availableto dial-up or poll from a shore-based host computer. The ship’s position finder(GPS) can be connectedto the NMEA0183-portat the Saturn Bm’s maincontrol unit. The systemreadily downloadsdifferential GPStransmissions fromInmarsat-B to providenavigational information even when out of range ofland-based DGPS stations. Importantly, Saturn Bmprovides continuous access to medical and maritimeassistance, navigational hazard warnings andmeteorological information.Traffic logging and creditcard supportSaturn Bm generates traffic logsautomatically for all outgoingcalls. The traffic log, which canbe printed out at presetintervals or on demand, showssubscriber number of the calledparty, start time and callduration, type of service, net provider/satellite andcaller’s identity if access code has been enabled. The traffic log can thus be used as a basis for correctbilling of private calls.Optional payphone, prepaid card or credit cardtelephones can also be connected to Saturn Bm.
